Chris Jones now wants out of his LOI

Valid point -- butttttttt. Can't you at least make a call and say here is my plan - here is my schedule. I am going to go to the final 4 this week and will fly back and meet you and your family next week - let's say Tuesday. Here is my cell phone - call me if anything comes up between now and then. We are just as committed to having you as our point guard -if not more so than the previous staff. I will check back with you on Friday to see how you are doing with your classes and with your efforts to get qualified.

Just like Mr. Ware you are free to leave if you aren't happy with your previous decision but we would like for you to get to meet me and my staff and understand what our goals and plans are before you make a decision.

Seems too easy to me and would have likely avoided the article in the Commercial Appeal. Maybe CM and co. haven't mastered texting.

Jones came off sounding a lil full of himself IMO.

I agree. Contrary to popular belief, the world does NOT revolve around Chris Jones. If he's that immature, then C ya, wouldn't want to be ya! It might just be a litlle MORE important for the new coach to also hire the coaches he needs. If Jones has this attitude, then he certainly isn't going to put the team first, he wants to be first. I thought he sent Jon Harris there to talk to him until he could meet with him. Unless Jones gets his act together, who would want him?

Agreed, but how do we know that isn't what CCM said (maybe not the here is my cell phone number part). The point is we don't know what was said between them. It could be CCM said I would love to have you on my team, I promise I'll be there after the final four but I have to go get some coaches to help you out etc and Jones said okay but now he's nervous and has changes his mind. Maybe CCM is looking at Jones's character and want to be a Vol by seeing if he can be patient for a few days. Thy being Sao I can also see where Jones wants to get his new recruitment started if he's not going to be a Vol.

In the end none of us know what was/is really said between them etc so we get all upset at one or the other with no real basis for either...

This nonsense with Chris Jones is so typical now days with too many recruits. Coach said he would be coming after the final 4. It's clear to me that Coach Martin is busy trying to finalize his staff, and every good candidate for a spot on the staff will be there looking for a job. But no it's all about Chris Jones. The world has to stop because little Chrissy want his attention. Give me a break!!! Sure makes me question just how much Chrissy want to be a Vol. Just too much immaturity and listening to the wrong people. There are a lot of anti Vol people in the Memphis area who would want to bend his ear and have him going to their favorite school and not Tennessee.

What a crock.
So Martin talks to Jones, Jones indicates that he is still interested in coming to UT, but in the next 3 days, while Martin is in the process of moving his family, buying a home, building a staff and moving kids from school, Jones ( a kid who has been at 3 high schools in a year) decides that since the University hasn't cancelled all classes in honor of the possibility of him coming to UT, he should look elsewhere for the school he can tell all the people at his JuCo that he was originally recruited by.

I'm willing to give coach the same 3 years we're giving Dooley. Hopefully he can keep these 2 guys but if not, we'll just have to move on.

Why do we keep hiring people who we are worried we will need to fire in 3 years? I want to hire someone who I hope doesn't bolt in 3 years.

To Fulfillmer and WKV, I would love to see how successful you guys are in your daily endeavors when your gut reaction is to assume that the one being straightforward here is the 18 year old kid with 3 high schools under his belt this year, as opposed to our middle aged coach who has spent the last 18 years as a professional player or coach, while raising a family and being responsible for employees and players.

Why do you have so much blind ignorant disdain for this coach? Why do you insist on switching every statement into the most unrealistic possible meaning?

Does anyone realize it's the "Dead Period" for basketball, started the 31st and ends the 7th at noon. Coaches are NOT ALLOWED to meet with prospects signed or unsigned. This is why CCM called the players on Monday to set up meetings after the "Final Four".

What has Martin said that I'm rejecting? Sincere question. I may have missed something. I think post #49 in this thread pretty much sums up a sane and sober take on the situation.

It's the "Dead Period", he is only allowed one phone call a week. CCM used it on Monday and Tuesday, unless we want to start committing secondaries in his first week as head coach.

Maybe CCM doesn't give a damn if Chris Jones is on the team or not. I think that although Jones had been contacted he didn't like seeing the headlines regarding Ware's release, when he had not yet been granted his. To me it sounds like this is the type of player that Cuonzo said he is not interested in in the opening presser. Not to mention he was dismissed by his prep school for being a nuisance. Go play for Pastner for all I care.

It is not ignorant disdain towards the coach. I like everything I have seen of Dooley and most of what I have seen from Martin. The problem is why are we, --the University of Tennessee-- who pump millions into athletic facilities, not willing to pay what Oklahoma is willing to pay for a college b-ball coach. The resources are vast. The facilities are there. The will is there. Why are we too cheap to pay for the coaches that can beat Florida, Alabama, and Kentucky? There is no reason for us to be cheaper than them. We have a bigger budget thatn both Bama and Kentucky. We are paying our big 2 head coaches --combined-- less than Calipari or Saban.

Why am I being "unrealistic" in wanting a coach that we are worried about giving a 3-year chance and then moving on to the nest bargain basement coach and giving him a 3 year chance. That was exactly the point that the poster was making. "Let's give coacha fair chance." I'm sorry but when you have 3 million to spend on a b-ball coach, then Cuonzo Martin doesn't deserve a "fair chance" to begin with, not until he's proven something. I was hopeful when we fired Pearl that Hamilton and co. would bring in a big dog. They have failed and failed miserably. Do you remember 1990-2005? We have the resources to hire a proven commodity like Turgeon or Grant but are unwilling to pony up. There is nothing crazy about being perplexed at this.

And best of luck to Coach Martin. He seems like a good man. I badly want him to succeed.

If this is the case then I understand. But shouldn't Martin have made it clear to the recruits that he is not legally able to communicate with them?

Fact we know-Martin talked to Jones, stated we want him still and said I will talk to you next week.
Can't we assume that in that conversation, Jones didn't say "No coach that isnt enough" or "Sure coach, but if I don't have direct contact with the athletic director before then, I may be out''? I mean really, coach talked to him and they, as far as Martin was concerned, both understood that Martin would be there next week to talk with him and family. What happened since then? Hamilton should not have a thing to do with it at this point unless folks think he should consider firing Martin and hiring someone more to Jones' liking. It sounds like someone got in Jones's ear, and he is looking for a way out while playing the victim in this. Man to man, if I tell you we will work out something next week because I am busy, and you agree, then when you make statements about the lack of communication, I will begin to question your honesty or your comprehension skills, or likely both. don't be surprised if the next word from Martin is that we are no longer interested due to this. You can be damn sure that Coach K, or any other big named coach would consider cutting ties with a player after this. This kid wants to be important, fine. But he isn't more important than every other aspect of UT basketball, and the sooner he realizes it, the better for everyone involved.

In all due respect, the last two hires were made in less than ideal situations. When we hired Kiffin, we threw a truckload of money to him and his assistants. They were the highest paid staff in the SEC. So, to say we aren't willing to do it is a little presumptious. Secondly, I don't think we will ever throw the big bucks in on a basketball coach, just not their hiring philosophy.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHO, WHO, WHO?

Who is this big coach that we could go after. We are not a destination job (Kentucky, Duke, NC etc) We aren't getting a guy who is established, so once again who? Bobby Knight? Dick Vitale? Digger Phelps? Jesus, I keep hearing this crap but there is no answer. Butler's coach isn't going anywhere, otherwise what BIG NAME is out there? Painter? give me a break.

Definitely, but in the same respect, the recruit has to listen to understand. Now, I will say this, CCM could have been on a plane to Memphis on Tuesday, but I think he decided he would wait.

but hey, you have your one elite 8 banner. Maybe next season, all 5000 people in attendance can get a free hot dog and their picture made w/ Kwanzo and "the banner"

The kid is 18 years old, he is going to be a little indecisive. And there are definitely a ton of people in his ear telling this kid what's best for him. Get off his jock and stop dogging him because he doesn't know if UT is the best choice for him. If he ends up here everybody on this board will be praising him.

I dot care what anyone says, Chris Jones was our top recruit and you go see him immediately if you want him to stick around here. Which now thats obviously too late due to the dead period, but Martin had his chance. You dont put off something important recruiting, especially when it comes to a recruit like Chris Jones. Nice move, you managed to piss off the best recruit we had your first week on the job. That doesn't look good.
