Why? What do you know that the rest of us don't? New coaching transitions are always a little messy and this kid being priority #1 may not be in the plans for Martin. Maybe Jones isn't nearly as important as you think, maybe yes. I'm not going to stress or pretend I know what Martin should do because I read a newspaper article about one recruit. There are other guys out there, especially if Jones isn't going to qualify anyway.
Putting together the right staff is much much more important than a single recruit. At best you get the kid and he lives up to the hype and is one and done. If you build a good staff you can get 5 star performance out of 3 star players. Makes no sense to recruit kids if u got no one to coach them.Seems like recruiting should take priority over filling out a staff. You need players to win in the SEC. If Jones and Ware are that good make them your first priority if not tell them to hit the road and recruit other players. Recruiting should come first. Oh yea and Mike Hamilton should be fired.
Does anyone realize it's the "Dead Period" for basketball, started the 31st and ends the 7th at noon. Coaches are NOT ALLOWED to meet with prospects signed or unsigned. This is why CCM called the players on Monday to set up meetings after the "Final Four".
Hard times are ahead folks...We are losing our entire recruiting class and from the sounds of it Martin isn't a go after a top player type of guy which means middle of the pack in the SEC east and maybe worse....Not sold on this hire at all and he's going to have to really get on the ball or he's not going to be here very long....I know its early but you would THINK saving this class would be top priority.....From the looks of it its not....Oh well
All the more reason to get to Memphis ahead of the dead period. Or failing that over- communicate with your key prospects. If you took over a company from someone else your first mission would be to communicate with your top customers and reassure them. Simultaneously, your competitors ( if smart ) will be trying to steal these key customers ( Jones and Ware ). You don't want to leave these customers with the impression that you don't really give a rats behind about them and will get with them in a week or two
if you can work them into your schedule.
Additionally, you never want to give the press in one of your favorite recruiting grounds an opportunity to run an article like this and negative recruit against you.
Say what you will about Jones and Ware but this has not been handled professionally. I feel like the ball has been dropped. Doesn't mean it can't be recovered, but not up to the professional or business standards that I would expect from my U of T.
