Chris Jones now wants out of his LOI

Again, before the March 31st, we were in the EVALUATION PERIOD. Jones does not play for Melrose; therefore, we could not evaluate him. We could evaluate Ware earlier in the week because it was a school related event. After the EVALUATION PERIOD is the DEAD PERIOD which ends on April 7th at noon. CCM called Jones to set a meeting after the dead period since this the ONLY time he could meet with him. Any other contact with him would be a NCAA violation.

Sometimes, before you call CCM out, it might be best to know the rules in which he can operate. Evidently, CCM does which is nice for a change.

This is just wrong. I don't claim to be an expert like yourself and still may be wrong but this is what the NCAA's take seems to be regarding the evaluation period: Note--I don't want to spend any more time on this but would welcome anybody else who is actually in the know.

"Evaluation period is the time a college coach may watch a prospective student-athlete play or visit the high school but cannot have any in-person conversations with the possible recruit or the parents off the college’s campus. The prospective student-athlete and the parents can visit a college campus during this period and a coach may call or write during this period." So it appears to me that CM could call without any sort of issue or violation.

You're confirming what he said. Since CJ doesn't play for Melrose, there was nothing to evaluate and no reason for Zo to go to Memphis.

CM should be able to deal with the egos of recruits, it's a reality of recruiting. In all honesty, with the recruiting budget of UT and its resources, a trip to the recruits (Ware and Jones) and phone calls to them, should have been priority number one. If he was interested in them (which he may not be), don't know why he would make them wait a week. There may be some NCAA rule that may prevent contact during this time. If not single phone call after the hiring gives me reason for concern.

THe recruiting "Dead" period started 3/31 and runs through April 7. Coaches cannot meet face to face with players during this period. Martin's press conference was March 28th. IF Jones can't figure out that Martin might be a little busy March 29th-30th, then I guess that's too bad. I think all the Memphis UT haters are filling Jones' ears with a bunch of bull to get him to de-committ. If he wants to be a starting pg and get coached up , he needs to stick to his initial decision and come to UT.

Agreed which my previous posts indicate. He called him Monday. You can call once during the dead period. By "contact", I meant a direct meeting with the recruit.

Jones will not end up at Memphis bc he and Joe Jackson's rifts would tear a team apart.

I am not sure this is so much about Jones wanting attention as it is his HS coach wanting it. I am referring to the Melrose coach (did not coach him this season, but is still heavily involved). Dude is bad news and has been known to do crap like this before. Memphis fans should be able to relate from when he tried to say that Adonis Thomas was upset with Memphis when it was not true. This reeks of him.

Jones is really talented, especially scoring the basketball, but as tripper mentioned earlier, his chances of getting eligible are not that high.

Hopefully coach will give him a hug and tell him we all love him....really? Give me a break...sounds like if he wants out he will get his wish.

to fulfillmer and wkv, i would love to see how successful you guys are in your daily endeavors when your gut reaction is to assume that the one being straightforward here is the 18 year old kid with 3 high schools under his belt this year, as opposed to our middle aged coach who has spent the last 18 years as a professional player or coach, while raising a family and being responsible for employees and players.

zing!!!

Chris most likely will end up in Knoxville, and he should. It's the best place for him.

From Keith Easterwood (one of the AAU coaches for Jones) earlier today on another message board.

March 31st-April 7th is a dead period.

THIS! Jones is a freaking baby and honestly he can find another place to go. I hate players that think their sh*t doesn't stink. Cuonzo CAN'T meet with him per NCAA rules, stupid kid.

Even if the kid has signed a LOI, the coach can't meet with him?

Putting together the right staff is much much more important than a single recruit. At best you get the kid and he lives up to the hype and is one and done. If you build a good staff you can get 5 star performance out of 3 star players. Makes no sense to recruit kids if u got no one to coach them.

This. A staff is more important than spending first week of job going after a kid who may not even qualify. Would love to have Jones and Ware, but these are 2 players. Furthermore, they may wanna know who other coaches will be.

Don't agree in the least. Get ballplayers. There is ample competent staff out there ad it moves around regularly.

sounds like someone should explain a "dead period" to the kid...

he got his call this week...monday he'll get another....

Definition: A "Dead Period," as the name implies, is a time when
nearly all recruiting activity is temporarily shut down.

During a dead period, coaches cannot:

•Make in-person recruiting contacts
•Conduct in-person evaluations -- on or off-campus
•Schedule official campus visits
•Allow unofficial campus visits
•Offer complimentary tickets to games

The only permissible communications during a dead period are phone calls
(limited by NCAA regulations to one call per week) and correspondence

if he still wants to be babysat...let him go...good riddance...

CCM is too busy to take the time to meet with Ware and Jones, both top 60 players. Yet he can offer 2 scrubbs schollys.

Bye bye Jones...I'd rather not have a Memphis kid on the team anyway. Seems like they all have the same crappy attitude and sense of entitlement. Cuonzo, leave Memphis to Memphis and work Georgia instead.

If I'm Martin, I make it a priority to keep my two signees. And if necessary I fly to Memphis right away to meet with Jones. You can always talk to coaches by phone while tripping to Memphis. I damn well wouldn't be casual about the signees. That's stupid. :hi:
