Chris Jones will officially ask out of his LOI on Tuesday

Let'em go because it's the right thing to do. Holding them to their LOI at this point would just be vindictive and more bad press for the school.

They signed to play with Bruce Pearl. It's just like enrolling at UT to major in biology or chemistry and then the school drops the curriculum. If the school doesn't offer what you want, you leave. The kids signed to come here for the education Pearl was offering, not some other guy. They don't even have student ID's made yet, I don't understand the mindset that UT owns them now.
bad example but I get your point. I dont know how ideal this would be but I believe they should hear the new coach out and if they still want to be released so be it. I just wouldnt say they are released until the cards are on the table unless the timetable for them to decide dictates otherwise.

I with you on this one. They wanted to play for pearl and that was one of the reasons they signed with UT. Now that he is gone, they should be able to go wherever they want to.

Given that coaches are able to leave at the drop of a hat, I don't disagree. But the system is flawed. Coaches and players SHOULD be bound by their commitments, as players and men. Consistency is also an issue. We don't let these kids out of their commitments in football, what is so different about basketball?

I'd be interested to know if those of you that without hesitation feel they should be granted releases, felt the same way about Kiffins second incoming class? (EE's)

Do NOT release any of them. They chose the school. UT is bigger than them. Let them sit a year if they want to go play somewhere else. Sick and tired of schools creating monster divas in these college athletes.

But of course you didn't have a problem with us getting USC football players

Jones and Ware should both be let out of their LOI's. Hopefully they'll stay at Tennessee with the new coach, but they shouldn't be forced to.

What USC players are you talking about? Do you mean the one player (Jr class by the way) that was allowed to leave for UT because the NCAA mandated in the summary judgment that the one year sit-out did not apply to junior and seniors? That was an entirely different scenario and did not apply to that current LOI class.

Yeah, who cares if we hire a coach who sucks and get bad NCAA sanctions. We want to drag the recruits down with us.

Ridiculous.

Jones needs to get his own house (grades/qualify) in order first. Neither will be let out of anything until the new Coach is in place and has an opportunity to meet with them (hopefully, not at a barbecue or in a 'bump' situation).

It seems odd to me that they were okay with coming to Tennessee to play for a coach who would have the program in no uncertain order....not even being able to coach their 1st or 2nd years here, have the program ineligible for post season for 1 or 2 years, have maybe 2 fewer scholarships (teammates unavailable to them) for maybe their 1st two years, have the coaches unable to compete for future recruits on an even playing field for a couple of years, etc.

Their lives have been upset somewhat. If they chose the school and not the coach, they would be fine except for all of the above mentioned junk that Pearl's staying was going to have fall on them.

Hire Shaka Smart, have him talk to these kids and they will be fine with their decisions to play ball at UT, especially if as expected with Pearl being ousted the sanctions are minimal.

It won't be even close to as bad as Indiana's, imo.

I'm willing to bet Hopson stays. With a year of work, and a coach that can actually run a half court offense, he has the potential to be a lottery pick. I don't think he liked Pearl's offense.

It shouldn't be. If I recall correctly, IU had 1 scholarship player return after the Sampson debacle. It will be ugly, especially if neither of the big H's return, but we should have many more scholarship players return.

He might not have liked the type of offense this past season. However, Hopson was given plenty of chances to take over games. Sometime he did and sometimes he didn't.

We slowed things down a little more this season. There wasn't nearly as much fastbreaking with this team. Maybe he didn't like the half-court offensive strategy at times. We were built for up-tempo in 2009 but not as much in 2010.

I just don't like Scotty's attitude on the court. He hangs his head too much. He lacks seriously on the defensive side of the ball. He's too athletic and talented to let that happen. He has room for improvement in a lot of areas of his game.

I would rather hire Anthony Grant. After all, he built the program at VCU that Smartt has seemingly maintained. Plus, coming from another big school should have more of a positive effect on them

How can you take over games with Goins and Tatum chucking up three's every chance they get?

on the bold: I agree, his attitude stinks, luckily that can change. It already should have, and I blame Pearl for it not. Sit his ass for a half, and see what happens. Defense needs work, but I don't think its as bad as others.

Do you think that Grant would leave bama? I don't. I base my feelings on Smart from some in this community's interaction with him at Clemson (I am 15 miles from their campus) and multiple interviews on local radio here in Greenville that he has appeared on while at Clemson and after he left for the UF and VCU jobs.

This young guy is a former point guard who has had to work hard for what he has achieved. He seems like a gym rat. He is polished. Yes, he inherited a good situation but it hasn't missed a beat. He has good contacts in the south, including Florida. I think that he would a steal for UT. Just my opinion. He is a tad older than Donovan was when UF hired him.

Yes, Scotty was given the ball to take over games. What happened sometimes? Turnovers! He would dribble into the lane and either lose the ball or charge into somebody.

That's what I was talking about. He was given opportunities but sometimes didn't come through. He did win quite a few games for us this past season though. If it wasn't for he and Harris we would've sucked.

The bold:

His defense should be much better than others anyhow. He's a McDonald's All-American and a potential NBA player. He should be able to stop opposing players with his length and athletic ability. He seems to just wonder around on defense.

This will not cut it in the NBA period. He could be the best scorer in college basketball but if he doesn't play defense he's not gonna make it in the NBA anyhow. He has a lot to improve on to even have a chance at an NBA roster.

In situations like this, I always wished the kids would wait a reasonable amount of time to see who the next coach is before asking for their release. UTK is making a mistake by not granting him a release for multiple reasons. The backlash will be tough to recover from.

I cant say i blame the kid. You sign months ago wanting to play for CBP and a winning program. No way id want to stay without the coach I signed with and a soon to be mediocre program.

Wait till he gets mad because you wont let him out of the LOI. Then he starts talking to all his friends and before long, itll take an act of God to get a top notch recruit to UTK. The fallout of not letting the kids out of the LOI is far greater than making him stay.
