Chris Ledlum Enters the Transfer Portal

Ledlum seen the writing on the wall; however, there would have been situations were the team could have used his body type. JJJ, JM, and DJ can guard new school fours, but it would be nice to have someone that has the body to challenge bigger 4’s. Right now if they redshirt Phillips, there are only 3 true post players in the rotation.

After committing to Tennessee, would Ledlum now have to sit a year if he portals again?
I’m pretty sure this late in the season he would be restricted to teams he can transfer to….I believe Barnes could block and team we play which includes all SEC teams

Coaches don’t have the ability to block transfers to certain schools anymore. That ended when the portal started.

I would’ve loved to have the option, but we are still incredibly deep even if JJJ has some health issues once again, or isn’t a 30mpg guy. Knecht, Mashack & DJ are all guys capable of playing small ball 4 in JJJ’s spot.
I do think a team can have too many players vying for limited minutes and there definitely feels like a glut at that 3-4 position. Barnes would not have been able to keep everyone happy and he still may not. With 13 on scholarship you need a couple of guys not expecting too many minutes in a particular season. I think I would rather loose him than DJ or Mashack. Good luck to him.

And the SEC is out of the question because of when he entered the portal, so we likely won't have to face him. UK would have had an open spot. He chose Tennessee over Indiana and St. John's. I'd probably watch Pitino, here, assuming they've got an open spot.
Isn't he a grad transfer? If so, I'm not sure deadlines apply.

And losing Ledlum sucks because he actually had two years of eligibility remaining and no risk of leaving for the draft. Sight unseen, and it's perhaps a bit risky, but I think I'd rather take my chances of having him for 2 years than JJJ for 1 even knowing what we have in JJJ. Too much injury risk with him.
I agree. I think what also really stinks is Ledlums potential to increase our offense production. It's no secret that our offense struggled last year, and I was really thinking Ledlum would help with that with his ability to get to the basket. I hope this doesn't come back to bite us in the butt.

Ugh. I’m gutted. I was so excited for his addition, was high on him. I hope it really was just homesickness but I’m skeptical, like others I’d have preferred to keep Ledlum over bringing Josiah back for another yet. We’ll have to pray that JJJ can stay healthy

I'm willing to bet there's a girl involved if it's not a family illness situation...

Just pure, uninformed speculation on my part but major life decisions that are done in such a seemingly erratic and sudden way like this one are quite often traced back to the peaches and cream

Maybe.....or more likely he saw JJJ coming back and Tobe's production in the international tournament......

"Was dealing with a knee issue and wasn’t going to play on the Italy tour in a couple weeks."

Attempting to imagine the view from Ledlum's perspective while dealing with a knee issue...

1) New teammates: You know what you can do, but you still have to prove yourself to win their on-court respect.

2) Higher level of competition: You don't know if your game is up to this level, so you also have to prove yourself to yourself. You're testing your own game on the court, knowing you need to quickly identify any parts of your Harvard game that will have to be discarded or upgraded for the SEC.

3) New defensive system/expectations: Although you're older, in this area you're now learning with the freshmen.

4) New environment/culture: Getting off campus normally provides new players some relief, some down time to relieve stress, and just be yourself for awhile. But Knoxville ain't Boston, and being off campus might become yet another challenge, maybe even getting under your skin that here's another way you don't naturally fit in. And good luck finding someone with DoorDash in Knoxville who can bring you a Cherry Frappe!

5) Being a part of a team might be your only stable identity for the moment.
And they're heading off to Italy to further bond with each other.

I have no idea if any of this reflects Ledlum's actual experience here, but it's definitely not hard to imagine.

On the positive side, if JJJ is blessed with an injury-free season, we will witness a show we'll talk about for years to come!
