Petersen makes 2 mill a year in Boise....We should offer him around 4 1/2 million and see if that gets his blood running...How anyone hasn't snatched this guy up yet is amazing.....There has to be something to make him leave Boise.

The problem is he is a millionaire with little stress at Boise. He can double his salary but stress quadriples in the SEC. He has it made but I would love to have him.

I think you throw 4.5mil at him and he'll come

i think you would need to be closer to 6 million and I think you would have to sell him on the school and the facilities, but I think if you were willing to make a push and pay Saban type money, he would probably come. And I think it's worth it. You have to be willing to spend crazy money if you want to land a slam dunk. But a slam dunk would pay for themselves in a year or two anyway. It's just a matter of taking the plunge. I don't think we have people in charge who want to win that badly, though.

UT needs to open up the pocket book and do whatever it takes to get this guy in Knoxville...He is the home run hire we need here...I have no doubt if the right price is reached We can grab the biggest rising star in college football...His offense would terrify SEC defenses as UGA found out last year...In 7 years he is 80-8 :eek:hmy:

He's been #1 on my list the last 2 times, but I don't think he's leaving Boise. Rumor is he loves it there and that they like the medical doctor their son, who has a serious medical condition, sees there. As stated above, UCLA made a strong run at him last year and got nowhere apparently. I would also be concerned about his ability to recruit in the south as he has no experience in competing with SEC schools for recruits.

Regarding recruiting...Winning with less is what the guy does. Once this happens recruiting would be a non issue.

The mystique factor only builds year after year as he wins 10-12 games and turns down jobs that would double his salary. He becomes more appealing ro prospective schools each year, and at some point, one dumb AD is going to throw out some crazy stupid offer at him (lets say 8 years at $48 mil) and he's going to cash in.

He has no pressure to leave now and only becomes "sexier" with each passing season and each big job he shoots down. Its a win-win situation for him.

Yeah. I actually think Petersen is an underrated recruiter. I lived in Oregon back when Oregon was good and Boise State was still just starting to be noticed. Boise State was going toe to toe with Oregon for players all the time. I think Petersen can recruit and I think kids will want to play for him. Remember Urban Meyer had not really recruited the south until he got to Florida and then he was regularly getting top 5 classes. I think Petersen could be similar.

Eventually the guy is going to want to play in a stadium that's bigger than 34,000 seats and is going to want to compete for real championships. Might as well make a push and see if that time can be now.

there is an actor with the same name (and spelling) that is scientologist that he has been confused with. Wish I had the link but it's been a while since I read that.

The rumor started when a sportswriter jokingly wrote that he was a Scientologist. From there it gained a life of its own. Petersen recruits well in Northern Cal, especially Sac. There are a lot of prospects there. USC will pick a few, like the dbs from Folsom- Goodman and Hawkins, but there are a lot of guys. I could see him going to Cal, but that is about the only other place that would be an upgrade.

4x Conference Crowns ('06, '08-'10)
2x BCS Victories ('06, '09)
2x Paul Bear Bryant Award ('06,'09)
1x Bobby Dodd Coach of Year ('10)

Wonder if he would come if we doubled his salary?

He has a child with a medical condition, and the hospital that specializes in its treatment is located in...you guessed it. Boise. It would take Gruden numbers to get him to come take over Dooley's dumpster fire.

Chris Petersen seems to be at the top of many peoples' lists here, but I'm extremely skeptical of him. Maybe it's not totally fair, but take a look at the *OTHER* Boise State coaches that leave Boise.

Dirk Koetter. Fantastic at Boise State. Went 10-3 and 10-2 in his 2nd and 3rd seasons at BSU. Was the coach that first ignited Boise State's spectacular run. He took at job at Arizona State and was OK. Went 40-34 there in six seasons. While he wasn't a failure at ASU, he wasn't a wild success like he was at Boise.

Dan Hawkins.
Hawkins was an assistant under Koetter. He came in and took the program to even greater heights. Hawkins went 12-1, 13-1, and 11-1 in his 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seasons at BSU. He left for Colorado after his 5th season, and proceeded to go 19-39 and guided Colorado to being the worst team in the entire Big 12.

Maybe there's something about Boise State. Maybe it's the administration / infrastructure there. Maybe Boise has stockpiled great coaches and competent people, and so long as they have a competent HC, they can win ball games. Don't forget that this was a great Division I-AA program at one point, as well. They only entered I-A in 1996.

Why is Chris Petersen any different than Dan Hawkins? Maybe Petersen could come to Knoxville and rebuild Tennessee, but what evidence is there of this? Why does everyone believe he's a great coach? Is it simply because Boise State has had good records under him?

I can't help but to think that success at Boise State is tied to a lot of factors and the head coach is only a small piece of the puzzle. For this reason, I view Chris Petersen as a terrible candidate for the UT job. Let's also not forget that recruiting in the US South is going to be totally different than being in the Mountain West. No evidence that Petersen can recruit Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

I'd put Petersen way down the list. He could turn out to be a great HC at some major program, but I think James Franklin, Dan Mullen, Charlie Strong, and Gary Patterson are all much more proven than Petersen when it comes to coaching in a place like the SEC.

I'm not saying Petersen would be a bad coach outside Boise. Merely that he's a huge risk. We have no evidence that he can turnaround a program. We have no evidence that he can win outside of Boise, which has produced winning teams almost regardless of who coaches there. No evidence that he could compete in the SEC. All we know is that when inserted into an already-excellent Boise State program, he continued to make the program excel.

From everything I've read, the medical condition thing is mostly myth.

I'd love to have him. I think he's probably more of a sure thing than Gruden (and I fully believe Gruden would win championships here). He's turned down big offers before, but I would put the full press on for him, and offer him Gruden money if that's what it takes.

You sound like Buddy Ryan complaining about Cris Carter- "All he ever does is catch touchdowns."
