He didn't start the success at Boise State, but he has taken them to an even higher level.

And he has sustained it for a longer period of time.

Truth be told, I would rather have him than Gruden. I know, blasphemer!!! I have a ton of respect for Petersen.

Petersen is is a non-starter. There are multiple threads debating why in the coaching forum.

Why is Chris Petersen any different than Dan Hawkins? Maybe Petersen could come to Knoxville and rebuild Tennessee, but what evidence is there of this? Why does everyone believe he's a great coach? Is it simply because Boise State has had good records under him?

I can't help but to think that success at Boise State is tied to a lot of factors and the head coach is only a small piece of the puzzle. For this reason, I view Chris Petersen as a terrible candidate for the UT job. Let's also not forget that recruiting in the US South is going to be totally different than being in the Mountain West. No evidence that Petersen can recruit Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

I'd put Petersen way down the list. He could turn out to be a great HC at some major program, but I think James Franklin, Dan Mullen, Charlie Strong, and Gary Patterson are all much more proven than Petersen when it comes to coaching in a place like the SEC.

I'm not saying Petersen would be a bad coach outside Boise. Merely that he's a huge risk. We have no evidence that he can turnaround a program. We have no evidence that he can win outside of Boise, which has produced winning teams almost regardless of who coaches there. No evidence that he could compete in the SEC. All we know is that when inserted into an already-excellent Boise State program, he continued to make the program excel.

If UT could get Petersen and re-unite him with Justin Wilcox, that would be a winning combo. I beleve Wilcox left because he realized Dooley couldn't get the job done.

Some good discussion points and for what it would cost to even have him entertain the offer, perhaps he should be down the list. If we are committed to spending $5 mil/yr, I'd prefer it be on a brand name or a proven commodity in big time college football.

No disrespect to Boise, but they are an 8-4 team on average with an SEC schedule simply based on talent. They sneak in and beat a big school once every year or every other year, but if they had to play Georgia, Mississippi St, Alabama, South Carolina, and Missouri in 5 consecutive weeks, they would suffer many more losses than the 1-2 they are now.

Its really a moot point probably, because he is at a place with a high salary and reasonable expectations. He isn't leaving for Tennessee. If he ever does leave, it will be for a boatload of cash at a west coast school. Most likely Cal or Oregon.

Pay him the money and his family, his son's doctors, and all there friends can move to Knoxville. Doubling your salary can make a lot of things happen.

Petersen does not have a sick kid. His kid had tumors removed 13 years ago when Petersen was coaching at Oregon. The kid receives ZERO special treatment in Boise and there NO "special doctors" in Boise keeping Petersen from taking another job. Petersen is also NOT a scientologist.

UCLA offered him $4 million and he turned it down. Petersen also turned UT down the last go-around. Gruden is more realistic.

You might as well start a thread about how "Peterson" wants to leave Boise and loves Knoxville because Peyton said there are good doctors there for Coach's sick son, as well as a large Scientology population. People would believe you then.

talk of peterson from boise state he is 82-8. i dont care what conference your in that's a good record. he would be my second choice if we can't get gruden. his buyout is only 750,000.

Because he has had repeated opportunities to jump ship and never has. Also his sons condition is another reason. They have a great hospital there to help him.

I like Peterson--he's a heck of a coach but I think if he wanted to leave Boise he would have left by now. As far as a fit for Tennessee, I'd say culturally speaking he'd go for a school out west---NOT an SEC school IMO.
