Clawfense crushes previously unbeaten N Illinois

The truth is this does not disprove that Clawson did not play a large part in Fulmer's bad last season, because he did.

This proves that the Clawfense works. I bet we will see it for ourselves as Dave walks down our competition's sideline.

I disagree. I consider Cutcliffe a part of the Fulmer coaching tree. There are several good assistant coaches that are patt of the Fulmer tree. Chief is one of the best DC's in the business.

Cut is part of the MAJORS' coaching tree! He goes back to at least 1985 on Majors' staff...:hi:

Let's say it this way then, Matt Johnson is an accurate pocket passer with decent wheels. Dan Lefevor was a guy with a strong arm, and wheels. If Clawson had a mobile Qb, he'd use a lot more read option. Jones changed his read option tendencies when Brandon Kay , a pocket passer, came in for Munchie. Those things you mentioned are tendencies, and they can change at any time.

It really seems like Clawson does a good job at tailoring his offense to the players he has. I believe that some day soon he will be the coach a big school.

I look forward to seeing what Jones can do with all the talent he is bring in this year. I am ready to see a up tempo offense that keeps the defense on their heels.

We will never know if it would work or not as he was not given the time to full implement his system. I also do not think Fulmer was ever going to fully buy in to Clawsons system.

Rumor has it that he interviewed with Wake Forest last night.

Maybe Fulmer should have hired him a year or two earlier. Possibly could have saved his job...but I think it had more to do with poor recruiting.

If I'm c orrect, one of the OL yelled/asked the rest of the linemen during a game "How is this so hard to understand?!?"

My guess is this guy really needed a few years to get players to grasp his system. However, he's stilll just the coach at BG so...

Ga Southern runs the flexbone triple option aka Paul Johnson at Ga Tech. The Clawfence is pass happy type offense. Total opposites.

At least this season, the Clawfence is 59% run vs 41% pass. Not sure if that qualifies as "pass happy".

You are correct. I stand corrected. Had one of my grey moments. Cut actually joined the staff in 1982 .:hi:

Assistants rarely left because no one wanted them.

People werent backing the Brinks trucks up to Knoxville for poaching.

To be fair, guys like Chavis, Sanders, Williams, Cutcliffe, Garner, Taylor etc. never had any problems landing jobs.

The main "complication" for the o-line was that linemen didn't lineup in the same place every time. They lined up according to the strength of the formation just like TEs always do which is walkways thought was a neat idea.

What is so complicated and specialized about that offense that would make it take 3 years to recruit for?

Very similar to what Jones does on O... but that excuse seems to float around here now. The O roster Clawson inherited was further from what he needed to run that O than the one Jones inherited.

It was a rhetorical question. Our personnel was OK in 2008 (except for being horrific at QB). The problem was that they watered down Clawson's system to the point that we had zero identity.

That is the way it looked. I always had the impression that Fulmer brought Clawson in to run the offense but did not allow him to run it. LWS says that is not the case. Whatever happened , it was a mess equal to the Sal Sunseri defense.

Apples and oranges . . . but I'm not going to change your mind.

What everyone seems to be forgetting is that when Fulmer hired Clawson, he would not let Clawson bring in his position coaches who knew the offense. So not only was Clawson teaching a new system to the players, he was also teaching it to the position coaches who then had to try and turn around and teach it to their position players...everyone but Clawson was confused and lost and people wonder why it didn't work...

This. there was a ton of internal back biting from the remaining staff. No one dealt with it well, including Clawson.
But that was Fulmer's fault. That should have all been vetted out in the interview process.
I say UT would have been better at the time to fire Fulmer and let Clawson run the show. He is a head coach. He'll likely never have take another coordinator job again. His next job will be a step up the ladder in the head coaching ranks.

This discussion gets even more interesting if Wake hires Clausen. Not sure that is the best next step for him though.

Northern Illinois should have called Fulmer. He is the only one who knows how to stop the Clawfense.

He's a great coach. Fulmer brought him to run an offense we never recruited for. It would have taken 3-4 yrs for Clawson's offense to work at UT but he was never given that long.

it would not have taken that long considering t. boyd was coming to UT the next year

Didn't we also have a highly ranked WR committed to that ended up at maybe a Texas school.

I agree that there are similarities but Jones in the past has relied on the read option to run the ball and make defenses respect the mobile QB. I do not remember Clawson wanting to do that I thought he was more of a spread the field out and throw it. I do think that by the way Jones is recruiting he would like to run more of a pro style offense and not rely on the read option.

Jones runs a spread offense ...but there are many different types of 'spread' offenses. Jones O is based on the 4 vertical philosophy...with short and intermediate patterns on every play . Possession passes are a huge part of his offense. This is a pro philosophy.

The zone read is a very small part of the offense. Jones offenses employ power running out of the shotgun with alot of zone blocking techniques. There is no full back , but a TE or Hback type is often used in the FB place ...even motioned receivers. Because the defense is spread ..it is still a power run , as you have more blockers at the point of attack .

His offense is balanced - 50 run% - 50% pass - in ideal situations. This zone read thing is not what makes his offense tick. It is simply a facet of the overall running game . Jones offense does not feature an option game in most cases. The TEs were not featured to the extnt that they will be ...because we really dont have one yet .

Power running and spread passing ...watch Manning , Breeze , Bradey , Breeze , and most NFL teams ...they all feature this. Spread pro style passing ...power zone running game .
