Clawfense crushes previously unbeaten N Illinois

Jones runs a spread offense ...but there are many different types of 'spread' offenses. Jones O is based on the 4 vertical philosophy...with short and intermediate patterns on every play . Possession passes are a huge part of his offense. This is a pro philosophy.

The zone read is a very small part of the offense. Jones offenses employ power running out of the shotgun with alot of zone blocking techniques. There is no full back , but a TE or Hback type is often used in the FB place ...even motioned receivers. Because the defense is spread ..it is still a power run , as you have more blockers at the point of attack .

His offense is balanced - 50 run% - 50% pass - in ideal situations. This zone read thing is not what makes his offense tick. It is simply a facet of the overall running game . Jones offense does not feature an option game in most cases. The TEs were not featured to the extnt that they will be ...because we really dont have one yet .

Power running and spread passing ...watch Manning , Breeze , Bradey , Breeze , and most NFL teams ...they all feature this. Spread pro style passing ...power zone running game .

Thank you that is a great break down. I guess Jones and Clawson have more of the same philosophies than I remembered. I guess Jones really did have to scale down his offense more this year than I thought.

I guess I was basing my opinion off of what he was trying to do this year with the motion of the WR and read option and did not realize that is not as big a part of his offense as it was this year. I have to admit I never really watched Cincy that much so I had not seen Jones offense much until this year.

Yeah brother ...scaled back is not the word . No threat at TE , whereas Jones likes to use multiple TEs ...and average to very below average QB play on the season really scaled us back . The young receivers didnt help. Our running game was under constant attack and long yardage situations were beyond the QB skill set

It all seemed to start coming together during the UGA game when Worley started to get a rhythm and confidence , then of course this helped us win vs USCe. The Worley got hurt and the rest is history .

Next season I look for QBs throwing alot of short and intermediate route and power running...I think they will be better at each . Play action will then become a staple . The zone read will be seen more at this point with alot of play action based out of it . When the QB gets in rhythm the hurry up , up tempo thing will be in full gear .

It really is a multiple flexible offense that incorporates alot of pro and college facets and is very balanced 50-50 pass run .

BGSU was 2-10 only three years ago. Clawson has turned them into MAC champions. This guy truly did and does know football. I will admit that I was very disappointed with his one and only year at UT. His success at not only BGSU but also at Richmond leads me to believe he was not given full control of the UT offense. They blistered N Illinois with very average offensive talent.

Uh I didn't. He threw the ball 22 times in te first half vs UCLA when we had Foster Hardesty and Creer. He was a pass first guy when we lost our entire passing game the year before.

Since when was 4 verts a philosophy and not a play?

Fulmer had the straps on Clawson.....

If I'm c orrect, one of the OL yelled/asked the rest of the linemen during a game "How is this so hard to understand?!?"

My guess is this guy really needed a few years to get players to grasp his system. However, he's stilll just the coach at BG so...

Meyer was just the coach at Bowling Green once upon a time.

Big things have small beginnings.

4 vertical is the base play of many pass oriented 'spread' teams. 3 or 2 of the routes are changed , or optioned to a different route on different plays. This is either done by receiver QB coverage reads ...which we are not doing . Or looking to the sideline.

Since it is the base play ...all other plays in the offense are derived from it . You can find alot of great article on google regarding this .

It's a wonder that He didn't change professions after seeing Jonathan Crompton try to run his offense.

Shoot…that was the tip of the iceberg when it came to the implementation of his offense…...

Its a west coast pro style spread with level progressions.

The Clawson hire never made sense to me in the first place. Fulmer hired a successful I-AA (now FCS) Head Coach at Richmond University to be Offensive Coordinator for the Vols. Sure, he was probably calling the offensive plays at Richmond, but his real job was Head Coach and running a program. BGSU hired him as head coach just 12 days after Kiffin fired him from our staff after our 2008 debacle. Does anybody remember who the other potential OC hires Fulmer could have legitimately picked? Chances are, if he picked any of them instead of Clawson, we might be waiting on Fulmer to retire still... and Clawson probably would have been hired at BGSU anyway.

I always took the Clawson hire as a HCIW hire on top of just being OC.

That is the way it looked. I always had the impression that Fulmer brought Clawson in to run the offense but did not allow him to run it. LWS says that is not the case. Whatever happened , it was a mess equal to the Sal Sunseri defense.

When Phil hired Clawson, he assured Clawson that the offense would be his(Clawson's) to manage. Phil repeated that publicly when the season started. After things went bad in several games, Phil stepped in to make some of the decisions. Say what you will, but it was obvious that the players did not know what they were doing. Crompdaddy did not know what the other players were going to do after the ball was snapped. That was the reason he played scared. The players never adapted to the Clawfence.

Assistants rarely left because no one wanted them.

People werent backing the Brinks trucks up to Knoxville for poaching.

Chavis had offers from the NFL that he turned down. Cut did leave. Sanders I never wanted to begin with so we can agree on that one. Still, his QB at FSU isn't getting messed up by his advice, apparently.

We had other good assistants...Brooks on the DL was outstanding. We developed a ton of DL talent with him. I think a lot of them stayed due to loyalty to Fulmer.
