Coach Jumper: This year?

Well, must have been good enough to win SEC regular and tournament championships and get to the Elite 8.

If you want to complain about offense at TN, you could go back to the beginning of time.

I agree it could be better, but I don't think it's an indictment of Holly.

So SEC championships and Elite 8s are satisfactory now? It's sad how far people's standards have lowered.

This year my expectations are for the team to gain some breathing room in games that they are clearly supposed to win. This way everyone that is healthy should be playing some significant minutes.

If we have injuries and end up with players that are 'projects' like Harris was last year, we are going to have a long year.

Last year I threaded that DD would be a jumper. (I didn't know she would jump that far though) I also was very forceful in asking for Holly's step away.

I have studied this current program as if I was going to be tested on it.

This is the year folks.

If CHW is to get back in, and stay back in, top four status, it is with this group it will start.

The players returning are seemingly the most coachable of the past year's brood. There are no "extreme personalities" on the floor to manage.

A staff hand chosen, via tenure or replacement, but chosen.

The best recruiting class in a heckuva long time.
Evina Westbrook, 6 foot G/SF, #2 (Hoopgurls 2017 rank) , joins Narred and Russell with home-state ties.
5-7 point guard Anastasia Hayes #7 of Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tennessee); 6-2 wing Rennia Davis #12 of Ribault (Jacksonville, Florida); and 6-4 center Kasiyahna Kushkituah #57 of St. Francis (Alpharetta, Georgia).

The new assistant's only uncertainty is "what tasks will she focus on". As far as her heart and loyalty, this is unquestioned. She bleeds orange.

There is nothing "outside", that I can see, to get in CHW's path. She truly seems to have everything lined up for a run.

Your thoughts?

I agree coach, this crazy talk about wishing Holly would stay for ever should end this year if Holly can't win the games she is supposed to win, if she can't coach the team to play like a top 10 team, the offense sucks and the team can't make it to the elite 8. If she can't get it done, this should be her last chance.

I do think she will need next season also, remember it is a load of Freshmen this season

Considering they have 10 now and 3 leaving @ the end of the year the following season they will likely have a bunch of freshman again. So, really they would just be right back in the same boat with the only seniors being Green & Jackson for the 2018-2019 season and nearly the complete rest of the team (everyone but Harris who would be a Junior) being underclassmen.

By that logic she would theoretically need I would say at least 3 more years after this one. Let her coach her #1 recruiting class through graduation. I don't expect her to go anywhere period she WILL retire @ Tennessee but I am just saying if we are talking about reasons she might be staying in the administrations eyes were this season to go all the way south, youth would certainly be one of them.

for four more years. You think this is the first good recruiting class we've had? We have talent every year.

We had a demonstrably better chance of making a serious run LAST YEAR as opposed to this year, IMO--and it is likely that next year will not be as good as this year without Nared and Russell.

You are most likely right about the teams chances. I am aware that the make up of the team last year was quite talented:

'13 Mercedes Russell - #1, 5 star recruit
'13 Diamond Deshields - #3, 5 star recruit
'13 Jordan Reynolds - #42, 4 star recruit
'14 Jamie Nared - #6, 5 star recruit
'14 Alexa Middleton - #28, 5 star recruit
'14 Kourtney Dunbar - #78, 4 star recruit
'15 Jamasha Jackson - #49, 5 star recruit
'15 Te'a Cooper - #8, 5 star recruit, Out with injury
'16 Kamera Harris, NR, 3 star recruit
& Shaquila Nunn which admittedly I am not sure what her credentials were out of HS but I believe was like second or third team All-Conference @ Winthrop.

This years team make up is:
'13 Mercedes Russell - #1, 5 star recruit
'14 Jamie Nared - #6, 5 star recruit
'14 Kourtney Dunbar - #78, 4 star recruit
'15 Jamasha Jackson - #49, 5 star recruit
'16 Kamera Harris, NR, 3 star recruit
'17 Evina Westbrook- #2, 5 star recruit
'17 Anastasia Hayes- #9, 5 star recruit
'17 Rennia Davis- #12, 5 star recruit
'17 Kasi Kushkituah- #57, 4 star recruit
& Cheridene Green which all I know is she is from London and was a NJCAA All-American.

I know that Tennessee always has recruited well. The rosters with the exception of youth really look quite similar talent wise. If you average out the rankings of what was lost you get an avg of 20.25. The average ranking of what was gained was 20. So, marginally better.

Absolutely.
And this is where Holly grows.

The team is a good one. Freshman, or not. The off-season issues are over. There's a new assistant in town, hand picked, as was Reeves.

There's only one thing I see that could get in the way of CHW right now.

...We had a demonstrably better chance of making a serious run LAST YEAR as opposed to this year, IMO--and it is likely that next year will not be as good as this year without Nared and Russell.

Fab Four. A true PG and a versatile guard. A couple of Bigs. . . . I think we are stronger...If we use our strenght to get us good leads and use our bench so they can prove to the fans why they're there..

I'm as down on DD as anybody but do you seriously think we would beat USC last year without her? Or MSU?

When she had her mind right, no one was better.

fyre Holly! lol

As good as DD was in both those games I would say Jaime Nared was the reason UT won both contests. Going for career highs in both games and also hitting game winning free throws vs SC.

But would they have even been in that position without the performance by that one girl

I agree Gule. I also think that it wasn't up to DD to get her mind right. She is 22, but in the eyes of a 50+ year old, she is a KID. You DO have to coach personalities as well as skills. . . Coach her and she can do anything, just let her "go" and her emotions control her performance. She needed a very strong hand..

This is not to say I respect her decision and timing.
I very much hold in contempt players who jump.

They affect so many lives and decisions when they do so.

I don't think she gets another year if she can't do something with the players she has. We have been giving Holly excuses for the last 5 years. If she had not had a donut for 2015 she would, more than likely, have two or three more upper classman. She has the horses to do well, the problem is can she make it happen.

The writing's on the wall TD.
It's fully her chosen players and her chosen staff.
No excuses.
