Coach Kellie Harper fired

Wes waited for them to come calling when he was at UTC for all those years. He's not leaving home to go some place that didn't want him when he wanted them. And....he's not replacing his former assistant again.
Home is The University of Tennessee, that's where he graduated from, but is originally from Texas. Either way, he may not come but I'd sure ask. ☺

So interesting that we read "staff changeS" immediately as Jon. And that's the big problem with any kind of nepotism - it's an immediate grievance magnet, whether warrented or not. It was long ago decided with zero evidence on this board that if there was a problem w assistants, it must be Jon.

To me, it makes more sense that it was Sam, since we've also already heard that recruiting was the main problem. Seems like the AD would have already known Jon and Kellie were a package deal and never offered that as an option. Also could be more than one change the AD was after.

Whatever, KJH did the right and noble thing by refusing. Shuffling deck chairs again after two years would not have been it.
Nobody knows what Jon’s job was and he didn’t recruit. He thought he was the coach I guess

She could have stayed if she made some staff changes but chose not to do that. My guess is that she was told to replace her husband. That could have been awkward.

This makes no sense.. DW is Jon’s supervisor and could have fired him. Then if Kellie quits, she would owe UT money to get out of her contract.

I admit it’s the one turn-off I have about her as well. It’s not a deal breaker to me but I’m skeptical of having an echo chamber on staff. Or they could be like my wife and I, and agree on nothing and call each other out on anything, so it could be a dream scenario lol.
The deal is broken on that at the U of T for now. Which I'm afraid is yet another mistake of limiting ourselves bc of old timey fears.

Yeah, it turns out the Cora Hall buyout story was the signal. Jewel coming back seemed like a sign in the opposite direction but she must like the coaching options in play.
You and I were not crazy about that article timing after all. Not gloating but it definitely pinged for me when it came out.

Rueck that’s why I keep saying his same. Some really nice players on his roster.

Gottlieb is the other obvious one.
Can they recruit in the south ....thats their question mark ? Great coaches but their geography benefits their recruiting , we cannot rely on the name Tennessee to bring players anymore with the last 2 coaches.

Interesting. I think she needed another year but I think the early OOC losses the past two years really hurt her. We would start high in the polls but finish unranked and get lower seed (drawing harder opponents early in the Tournament). Tennessee also seems to be miles behind LSU and South Carolina and that hasn't helped either.

I would have given Harper another year, especially based on how competitive Tennessee was in March (November and December were disasters though).

I hope they have a great hire in mind to replace her because we will have egg in our face if we fire her and hire a dud.

It’s that, or could be the players were totally blindsided. Or, they had a feeling but were throwing support behind Kellie. Which is commendable, but a tough position to be in.

She just changed two yrs ago. I'm surprised a staff change was even offered, and I'm not surprised she wouldn't do it. Could be Kellie was just tired of all of this. This year was just incredibly brutal for her.

I just hate that this eliminates some interesting young prospects in the coaching search. We're swimming against the modern tide on this one. Odd coaching restriction to keep in place.
If it was Jon, couldn’t it just be him and not necessarily the husband/wife thing? Just saying and I have absolutely no clue

DW has shown himself to be weak and subject to which way the wind blows. He brought in a baseball coach that is an embarrassment to the university. That program is now known for vulgarity, poor sportsmanship and generally being a bunch of punks. I am tremendously concerned that the tradition Pat established of a national contender AND a class program is headed for the ash heap.
This is the dumbest $hit I've ever seen. Danny White did not hire Tony Vitello, but it would be a great credit to him, if he had. Vitello has been awesome. In no way has Danny White been "weak and subject to which way the wind blows." His response to the NCAA's investigation was pitch perfect.

Kellie Jolly Harper was never going to accomplish anything of significance at Tennessee. She failed at NC State and she failed here. She is a mid-major coach, who should be coaching at a mid-major school. I am pleasantly surprised by this development.

Sounds like White agreed with you but she didn’t like the terms that came with the retention of her job. Hard to feel quite so bad for her in that context.
