Coach Power Rankings

BUT...what did he do for us lately? Hence why he is no longer here. Moving on.

Moving on to what? If you take away Fulmer's championships and the other teams he fielded capable of competing for championships, his resume is only slightly better than Ferentz'.

Moving on to the Georgia game and the future of Tennessee football with CLK.

The victor of this argument returns!! (me). I assure you that if kirk ferentz were the coach of tennessee or georgia when they had all that talent you can bank on a few NC's. The victor of this argument will now leave once again

What is it, exactly, that makes you so certain that a coach with a career mark of just over .500 would win multiple national titles?

Rich Rod turned an awful program at WVU into a title contender and he's doing the same thing at Michigan. Which 1-AA team did he lose to? And please don't say Appalachian State.

Also, Davis won 8 games at UNC last year, and certainly has them moving in the right direction. You don't build teams like he did at Miami without being an outstanding coach. Way to early to say he isn't good anymore.

Rich Rod didn't take over an awful WVU program, unless you call 16 winning seasons in 20 years along with 2 undefeated regular seasons awful. I think he is a good coach but he didn't begin to dominate the Big East until Miami, BC and Virginia Tech took off for the ACC.

Butch Davis built Miami back up but it wasn't that hard bringing in top notch recruits to Miami which is how he built the program, not because he is an outstanding coach. 89-69 career coaching record between College and the NFL and he almost got shut out by Al Groh's Virginia team that lost to William and Mary.

Iowa's record from 1989 to 1998:

66-49-2

Iowa's record from 1999 to 2008 (Ferentz's tenure):

70-51

Saying Davis brought in top notch recruits is such an understatement that it is almost insulting to him. I find it hard to imagine any coach being able to put together a team like that.
And I was off on WVU's program but Rich Rod made them a lot better and took them to new levels in a short amount of time.

Did you really just say that Ferentz would have won national titles at an SEC school when he hasn't really done a lot in the Big 10? FAIL.

the victor of the agrument returns once again. His first like 3 season at iowa they won a total of like 5 games or something so his losses took a huge hit in the period. ever since then iowa has been beating up on the likes of LSU, florida and USCjr. Thank you once again i will leave this argument the obvious victor

hold on i wont leave just yet. And yes he would win NC's at an SEC school because he because he beats teams in the SEC with.......IOWA. its iowa for christs sakes. He is def a better coach then alot in the SEC. Thank you once again i will leave this argument the victor!!

So if I understand correctly, if it weren't for the terrible yoke around his neck that is Iowa football, the heavy anchor that keeps him weighted in mediocrity, the bushel basket that keeps his light from shining, Kirk would dominate college football in a way not seen since the Yalies of the 1890s. He would do what Steve Spurrier, Jim Tressel, Bob Stoops, and Nick Saban, just to name a few popular names from the lists floating around this thread, couldn't--win multiple national championships. Yet, because he is in Iowa, it is a miracle that he can win 54% of his games and finish the season ranked 4 times each decade.

I still think there are flaws in your reasoning.

His best season came in a year he didn't have to play Ohio State. And with his best team ever, he still lost to a 7-loss Iowa State team.

the victor of the argument returns!!! i dont know how many job oppurtunities that he has had at iowa(NFL and College) but is a crapload. Every time his name comes up he says he is staying at iowa cuz he loves iowa that is the only reason why is still there otherwise he would be a head coach of a much more prestigous team and that is obvious. As i will state once if he was the coach of georgia or tennessee or someother SEC school he would compete for NC's. Why wouldnt he? he already beats the likes of nick saban and steve spurrier with.........iowa. yeah thats right.....iowa. I will now put this argument to rest and declare kirk ferentz a great football coach and i will declare myself the winner of this argument!

Why would he leave? Evidently, all you have to do is win the Alamo Bowl and the folks in Iowa think you are the second best coach in the nation and pay you accordingly.

muhahahahahahah all you fools are blind!!! iowa is still undefeated and kirk ferentz is proving all of you wrong! I think certain members of the volnation forum should give kirk ferentz a gentle kiss on his back side! you guys cant fight it any longer kirk ferentz is one of the best coaches in the nation!!!!

Wisconsin was a 6 loss team last year and they probably won't be a whole lot better this year. Big freaking deal.

You mean kinda like the gators beating UK and Vandy and FIT for cryin out loud... F freakin' IU... Florida Institute of Uniformity or underwear or??? On their (an FBS.. BCS team's.. schedule Gaaaaaah how can they NOT go to the national championship game?

Urban is the best coach EVER...

Was that thunder?

Rant over.. vodka gone.

Butch Davis only got 20 scholarships a year when he was at Miami, because of Dennis Erickson's violations. I am a fan of what Davis is doing at North Carolina. Their football sucked before he was there.

My top 5
1) Urban Meyer
1a) Nick Saban
3) Pete Carrol
4) Jim Tressel, Chris Petersen, Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Joe Paterno and Les Miles

The next 5 ( no order )
Butch Davis
Mark Richt
Jeff Tedford
Rich Rodriguez
Brian Kelly

Uh... Ok? No one used Florida's wins over UK and Vandy to make it seem like Meyer was a good coach.

Some local area homerism, but I'll just put Mike Riley's name in the discussion. IMO he's 2nd only to Carroll in the conference as the best coach, and has to be considered one of the better ones around the country. The fact that he's got a team based in Cowvallis that enters most seasons with a realistic look at 10 wins including some ranked teams is incredible. It's the equivalent of maintaining a decent/good program at Washington St., Iowa St., Indiana, etc.

Not that I'd put him in my top 5, but I think he deserves some run.

Uh, I beg to differ.. it's part of the entire package. If not, what really QUALITY team has florida beaten this year.. and how decisively? I was actually backing Iowa's contention that they have a pretty good coach there. Iowa plays 2 teams in the top 10.. fla.. only 1. (and THAT team was overrated) urbie is getting a free pass this year.. it makes me sick. And yet he continually is rising to the top of the list. Mark it down.. when timmy two step gone.. urbie.. only slightly above average.
