coaching discussion (split)

Dang, I was hoping you were local so doc and I could grab some pop corn and watch you do your thing. (send me a DVD.

Michael, I know coaches want to stand up for other coaches. I do too. . . But you didn't get to see some of what we saw here. The games on tv do not show : . . . Looks of bewilderment...No working the refs...No standing down a player when they were walking back to the bench grinning after a frustration or a defiance foul or turnover...Things not only the great Pat Summitt, but you or I would as well not accept. . . . And some of the historical non-monumental's:... Our first loss EVER to Miss ST; the first time since February 10, 1985, the Lady Vols failed to be ranked in the AP Poll. That snapped a streak of 565 consecutive week, when we lost to an 8-18 LSU team; And it’s compounded by the fact that last year's was the most talented group of players Warlick has had since taking over as head coach;....More...

Its not about bashing Holly at all Mikey. I/we all want Holly to succeed. Her success is UT's success, is our success....Its about her coaching like a coach who worked for most of her coaching years next to a legend. If it were me in that spot, I would not only expect the same intensity from the fans, I would relish it, because it means they are truly invested in the program.

Our expectations are not unreasonable at Tenn. . .In fact that is exactly what they are, expectations, not daydreams .

And it isn't about level of these players, its about the level they should be at. And the level the program should be at. There are absolute needs in these girls individual games. Coaching is coaching Michael. A first year coach can be as good as one 30 years in., An AAU coach could be as good as a life-long college coach. My mentor used to say, "either "you can", or, "you can't",, there is no in between.

These are some of the top athletes in the country. Mikey...Stallions. . . You don't control a stallion, you lead it, by directing it's head. You direct its head and the body follows.

Well said Coach!

why all this love for dawn staley?

imho, she's the most overated coach since joanne McCallie.

OK..Dawn built a program where one didn't really exist. She is now the top coach in the SEC which is recognized the best conference in the nation. The women's basketball was a more minor sport when Summitt started winning national championships. There was little competition for her with the early fan support. It got harder to win a national championship as the years past because other schools started investing in the woman's program. She (Dawn) has just started to getting the players it takes to win a national championship and there is no end in sight. I would think she has earned her respect through hard work...much like Summitt did in her early years. It takes talent...and a little luck to win a national championship. If Geno had lost Stewart at the end of any of those seasons he may not have won a national championship...that's the luck part. Dawn is and always will be a great coach and a major player on the woman's basketball scene.

oh yea, well I coach at john henry pile driving tech, possum holler Alabama...

so there!

Coach J, you're right I never came to a physical game. However, from what I've seen and from the performance that the team made in the tournament the team that played in the regular season and tournament were totally different. I feel that she reached them in a way (either after the LSU or Alabama loss) that she never had previously. Those are the moments we as coach take pride in, the turning points in a season that shows us that we've gained some confidence or trust in our ability from the players prespective. You have to realize that Holly can do a grade A job but if the players don't don't buy in or trust you, it still won't work. I think that was the issue, she faced something that was unique on top of all the new changes that the game made which for her could've been a bit overwhelming in the beginning. She is doing the best she can to replace a legend and I don't think she is as bad as you or the other overly critical people are making her out to be. I honest feel if you give her an honest look over you'll see she has plenty of qualities that mirror Pat which made her a good choice to take over the helm. Give her a chance Jumper, she just might make you a real believer!

Just advice from one coach to another!

I wish I had seen this post before I wrote the one below.

I had to learn a lot as well about volnation. These are more than just posters here Mikey, they are full-on supporters of the LV's and quite adept at investigating. I hope after reading your words, that you are the coach of San Jacinto College-North. I would prefer to eat my words after such a well-thought response.

Are you sure? . . . I got this email from Michael Madrid last night < michael.madrid@sjcd.edu >

=============================

Do I know you?

If not, sorry to have bothered you.
If so, I would open up conversation with you if you want, if not i understand, as I was rough on you.

Coach Jumper

============================

If this were you you would have known who coach Jumper was.

As I'm sure you are aware, there are strict rules to who I can communicated with on School issued equipment under the pretenses of coach. As I'm new to the current school, I was advised to respond to your personal email in that manner which is why my username here is different. C'mon Jumper, you trying to get me fired?!

No worries I am who I say I am. Once you make that trip to the great state of Texas in December, I'll welcome you back for a chat in my small but nice office. It is nothing compared to what Holly has but I'm pleased nevertheless.

Email me again on monday and simply say, "No problem"
Cool?

We did better in the tournament because DeShields finally decided to stop pouting and play good basketball. Her play was the difference. I don't know what her issue was all year, but she seemed to have a bit of a bad attitude--her body language was terrible, she was not playing hard at times, drifting around on defense, throwing a lot of dumb, showtime passes that ended up in the crowd--and her performance in MANY games was awful. I can only assume that she wasn't motivated by the regular season, which would be bad and unfortunate because seeding and home court, etc. matters a lot. She should be a leader of this team, but she'll need to drop the prima donna attitude and adopt leadership qualities first.

She was coming back from injury, and her body couldn't do what she wanted to do, which made her turn inward.

Diamond will sparkle this year, haterz. Yes, she had a average year, coming back off one year off, and dealing with nagging leg injuries all year.

She will be mentally tougher this year. Go Diamond. Go HOlly and STaff.

Her leadership qualities are tremendous, she represents the students, for the NCAAs. She had a beta moments last year, she will be fine, cos her expectation for herself and team are high!

I don't know Pat4life, I wish I could feel as confident as you! You know I look and see her stats from her "Freshman of the Year" year were practically identical to this past season. I wonder if we as fans expect too much from her individually.
You know one of the hardest obstacles for a coach is when their "BEST" player is not their hardest worker.

Do you remember DeShield's turning point? and what seemingly sparked it?

I believe it was a certain coach deciding to take her out and dine/have a conversation with her to see what was troubling her and remind her how important she was to the teams success!

Exactly, it had nothing to do with showtiming... The child simply needed to hear the right words.

She needed to be coached mentally.

It wasn't about DD's pouting or being a primadonna, it was about her not getting what she needed. She didn't get it at NC, she wasn't getting it here.... What you were reading as acting out was actually a cry for help.

If you (armchair) have a female child, you should understand this. If you DO have a female child and don't understand this, then I would venture to guess your relationship with that child is equally confusing for you.

What was she crying about? And what did she need? My assumption is that by 2nd year, at least, everybody ought to be acclimated to college and the rigors of playing a sport. Last year was DD's 3rd year--she spent a full year with the team before playing again last year. EVERY player needs to be coached mentally--that goes without saying--pretty much every day they are on campus. Whatever the problem was, it wasn't a good look for DD or the coaches--as it shouldn't take the entire season to get your act together. BUT: it's history, no need to dwell on it, and let's hope she and the team are better this year It won't be easy as we once again have serious injury issues before the season has even started. The Curse of Warlick.

DD has won championships. She knows the level of play to get there, but has had to not play that way because she gets accused of showing off.

She cried out by: ;throwing passes to ghosts ;Walking back to the bench with no remorse after a silly foul or turnover ;Having that "What did I do" look on the floor.

One of my philosophies in coaching is, "It ain't showing off if it is an integral and practiced part of your game".
Della Donna does it best right now in passing. Maya in scoring moves...
DD plays her best ball when she can unleash all of her skills. . . . Wouldn't you cry?..She did, and Jollette sat with her and told her, "Play your game" and " Performance,, will shut them up"

And she performed during the playoff run.
True, though, she does need to "Jordan up" and make EVERY outing as if it is the last outing.

Every player has to be "READ" mentally, not necessarily mentally coached, but the coach has to see that something is mentally stopping a player from doing what they do.. With my girls, if they had their optimal countenance on their face and in their body-English, I left them alone. But if I saw an emotion, that wasn't their before, I talked to them (If I felt they needed to talk). . . Coach athlete is a bond. Sometimes closer than parental for the moment... I have had dominant players that needed to vent and had no one they could vent to. (They didn't want anyone to see their vulnerable side). .Burst out and cry in front of me. Then look at me when done and say, you tell anyone and I will KYA. ;o)

You can't do this by being their friend,. You do it by being their mentor.

This is the element that was missing last year that I think will be much more present, this year. This is why I have more optimism for this year.

Every alpha athlete, I ever played wit, had a s***ty attitude on the court. Ijs, never met a nice one, especially one who is used to winning and being the best player on the court.

And most alphas are hard on themselves, especially when they are not playing or doing what they need to do, to help the team win. You had a frustrated team most of last year, but by the NCAAs, u saw a confident team.

Body Language, are you serious? I guess the body language of the Lady Vols fan is horrible too.

Go Lady Vols.
