Jones can out recruit just about anyone not named Saban or Meyer. Big time schools look at that as well. Also Jones would not walk into a situation like he did with UT at MSU. He had to follow one of the worst college football coaches in history. MD has been a winner at MSU and their program is loaded with talent and has huge momentum. Who knows how Butch would do there?
Whoever came in after jones would also be coming in behind one of the worst coaches in football. Jones would make that team 6-6 at best with his infallible system and greatest coaching staff in America.
I think Colorado will be looking for a new head coach at the end of the season and I would put them in the same catagory as Maryland. Butch(If he were shown the door) would be a good hire for Colorado or Maryland. I think Butch stays after Tennessee wins 9 counting the Bowl game.
Correct, Peyton called and convinced Jones to take the Vols job. Manninig knew Jones would stockpile talent and then fail. It's Peyton's master plan. A smokescreen I tell ya.It was reported that CBJ took the Colorado job but UT called at the last minute and he backed out on them and took the job here instead.
Michigan State is a better job than South Carolina. Michigan State is a program that can win easier than Carolina. Dantonio isn't leaving MSU for S. Carolina. MSU is right there at the point of being able to compete for a National Title; Carolina is a dumpster fire right now.
I doubt highly Butch was even a thought in their heads
I agree. If Michigan State opens up, I doubt Jones would be on their short list, or any list. Jones hasn't proved anything yet. IF he wins a couple East crowns then he may start popping up in some searches. Until then, UT is "safe" from losing Jones to any program.
Dumbest thread ever.
(a) Dantonio is probably no more than 50-50 to go to South Carolina. He has a national title contending time in East Lansing. Starting over might not be an appealing option, particularly at a place that is traditionally difficult to win at. The only reason he'd even consider it is because it's his alma mater.
(b) In the event that Dantonio did go to South Carolina, there's no conceivable reason why Butch Jones would want to go Michigan State. Butch has spent 3 years building the roster up here. Why leave to start over at MSU?
(c) Michigan State is a good program, but it's not a "Tier 1" program like Tennessee. MSU is traditionally middle of the pack in the Big 10. Dantonio is probably the best coach in MSU history. Why would Butch want to go to MSU and then not get any credit if he succeeded? [It would be similar to how everyone claimed his success at CMU and Cincy was from following Brian Kelly.]
(d) Butch would probably make less money at MSU.
The entire idea makes no sense at all. It would be like suggesting that Nick Saban would consider leaving Alabama for a job at Pittsburgh.
(Speaking of which, if Dantonio did leave, MSU would likely target Pat Narduzzi at Pitt. He was Dantonio's DC for 8 years.)
