College football is screwed now. There is an I in TEAM now!

Lmao, another sky is falling post from an old head. Y'all sure act like little kids. It's so hilarious.

Let's see.

Football - #7 10-2 with playoff berth.
Basketball - #1 undefeated currently.
WBasketball - #15 undefeated currently.
Baseball - National Champs.

I guess it's not a good time to be a Vol fan with all this suffering.

I think most folks here don’t need it explained. It is painfully obvious
Except there is absolutely no consensus that this is ruining college football. Opinions are all over the place so explaining your stance seems reasonable

So the powers that be wanted college football players to be paid. So be it. Also wanted to let players transfer anytime they want.....so be it!. So, now that everyone has taken a minute to watch the new rules (or lack of) in college football and basketball did it get better for everyone? Doesn't seem so does it? Maybe for only one part of it, and that is the player. The player has received the best benefit of all in getting paid and being able to go anywhere they want at almost anytime they want. A lot of smart people saw this coming and have sounded off, some , even great college coaches have decided to hang it up because they say what was to come is NOW here. Vol fans are now reaping this 1st act of a crap show with loss of players in the portal, and corruption with other teams trying to steal the best players you have on your team. I for one hate it as a VOL fan for 60 years. There is a big I in TEAM now, and it can and eventually will ruin college football for ALL OF US. This Christmas was the first time I received a piece of TENNESSEE VOL fan wear and really didn't get excited about it. Thankfully it wasn't one with a players' name on it that will probably never play for UT again.

Hopefully, this crap show will change soon.
I don’t know the answer to the problem. On one hand I don’t think players should get paid anything because they are already getting a free education in return. Of course most of these players couldn’t care less about the education part. They are ungrateful because there are many many kids that make great grades that would give anything for that free education while a bunch of numbskulls that play a sport don’t appreciate or take advantage of that free education.

Then again the universities are making a mint off of the backs of these athletes and passing the cost down to the average fan. So that makes me think they should get paid something because they are the ones putting in the work that makes the universities millions upon millions. I just don’t know how to remedy this.

So they should get a free education while billions are being made by others? Sorry but the laws of this country rightfully disagree with you.

Lots of pro athletes make more than their coaches. Should that be changed as well?
I don't know a ton about NIL, but do players get a cut if one of their jersey is sold at Alumni Hall, etc.? If not, those billions are still being made and not trickling down to the players.

Allowing this system to exist with no "system" in place is a problem. Take a look at it from 20000 ft up and the problems are easy to spot.

It wasn’t “the powers that be”, it was the U.S. constitution.

How dare the system be changed to benefit the people putting in the most work! Won't someone please think of the guy who just got his yearly new shirt?
There has to be a balance though. This sh_t is just plain loco. The players are putting in the work, but theyre not the ones financially investing, which those who are should have some rights too.
Even the NFL has guidelines with multi-year contracts, team salary caps, rookie salary caps, etc. If the NFL operated like CF right now, all salary caps would be removed and EVERYBODY would be on one year contracts, essentially creating free agent chaos every damn year and the richest franchises would be accumulating all the talent! What's happening right now in college football is not sustainable. The problem is players now want all the financial benefit and autonomy with none of the responsibility.

I said this earlier it is a great time to be a vol. I just hope they keep putting money into baseball and basketball. Some schools put all their money into football. I'm hoping UT can continue doing what their doing.

They should get paid but there also should be some regulations as well.

Cmon now that’s being overly broad. Nobody has a right to play football, attend school for free, and get paid while doing it. Not saying it shouldn’t happen but there has to be some sort of rules and structure.

Overly broad? Just making the point that it wasn’t like somebody chose to change the rules. The court interpreted an individual right.

Agree, we're better than most. For example though, I feel comfortable that Rick Barnes has shown a few seasons in a row that he can take what we lost to graduation, draft or portal and backfill very well...or arguably, the past two years, upgrade. I also think we've not really seen JH be able to navigate the portal situation yet...and think that uncertainty, along w/ how we ended the season w/ OSU loss, leaves us in a more doubtful position. If JH was killing it in the portal the past couple years, to a point that those players really upgraded our on-field performance, I'd be more comfortable, and maybe not as pessimistic. This is an important off season for JH and staff.

I don't like the direction of CFB, but imagine we'll be fine, w/ all the resources we have...and give JH credit that he seems to have built a pretty good locker room culture to attract talent.

Who did we lose of great consequence? Must’ve missed it.

How is this “ruining college football”

Because at least in the NFL fans can emotionally invest in a team because the core players are under contract for a specific length of time. In college football now rosters change over every year and it becomes difficult to care or emotionally invest in your favorite team because it’s no longer a group of kids who wanted to play for your team because of the same things that you love about the school/program. Now every team is just a group of me first individuals paid to wear your team’s jerseys for a year until another team hires them. That’s why college football is being ruined

It was court who ruled in favor of athletes and their ability to make money off their Name/Image/Likeness (that schools and NCAA was exploiting). Also court ruled players are free to transfer. Both cases of fundamental human rights.
Sorry your game got ruined (not sure how) because athletes got their basic rights !!

To a point college was always that way. Far more program than player driven. Now we’ve just shorted that window for some of those players.

At most you got 5 years with a player previously. Now you get 1 with some, but that’s still not the norm

I don’t see this as radically different

You good with regulations limiting your pay as well?
I’m not getting a free education on top of hundreds of thousands of dollars-millions to play a sport. You shouldn’t be able to sign with a school, and then just turn around and leave at anytime and play for your former teams rivals and opponents. You should have to sit out a year at least and still get paid what you agreed to sign for.

You're just falling for the big numbers. It all boils down to limiting their potential earnings. Something you don't seem to be in favor of for yourself

Why would they have to sit out? If someone goes from McDonald's to BK should they have to sit out for any length of time?

Well if you leave your job for another one you do lose things. You lose seniority maybe vacation time, maybe you have to move to another city (like college players) there are cons to swapping jobs there should be cons to a recruit signing with a school then transferring to that schools inter conference opponents a year later. That’s life, there’s pros and cons to things. Why should this be an exception?

Talk to the Attorney General of The State of Tennessee who joined the lawsuit to have multiple transfers without having to sit out.

And what are the chances he joined that lawsuit without checking with the admins at UT? I'd say zero.

So blame UT.
