College football playoff

Neither the fourth nor fifth place team should have a shot. I'll use the BCS as a guide. There hasn't been a season since 1998 in which simply playing one more game wouldn't have removed all reasonable debate. If you guys want a bunch of 9-3 teams in a playoff, have at it. You'll get exactly what the NCAA basketball tournament is getting now. Decreasing ratings due to a diluted product.
So you're saying the NCAA basketball tourney is getting decreased ratings? Hard for me to believe. I would be willing to bet that wagering and office pools haven't suffered one iota.

i'm sure people will watch the playoff games the question is will people care about the REGULAR season games as much. I sure wouldn't. In your proposed system cal's loss to oregon state all of a sudden doesn't matter in the slightest. I might actually chose to do something with my sat instead of watching the game if i know my team has a 1 or 2 game margin for error.
What the hell. The damn college football season is way too short to be able to put any game on cruise control. I was just being sarcastic when I mentioned that the 16 team field could be determined by the BCS standings. Conference champions should be the first consideration and after that some great mind will have to figure out who should out the field. As far as the concept that all the BCS games were a foregone conclusion as to who should be in the title game, a prime example would be the first one that was won by Tennessee. There was a log jam going into the final week of the regular season to determine who would play Tennessee. Several teams lost that weren't expected to and we ended up with FSU, who I believe wasn't the best opponent. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

that team MAYBE had 2 players that would start at usc or florida. usc's 3rd stringers would start at most positions at bsu. oklahoma wasn't exactly a great team last year and they had to basically choke the game away to lose. no way a team that thin and small could survive a playoff system. and i don't remember a single BSU player after that game claiming they had a legitimate claim to the national title.

edit: and you may not care about northwestern, but northwestern alums do. how would you like to be a fan of a team and know that your season no light at the end of the tunnel? for some fans a dec 14th bowl in las vegas or something is a huge deal. don't be a dream killer.
Is that an endorsement of a playoff system?

Sorry excuse. SEC is undefeated in BCS title games. System sucks.
Yeah, I'm sure Auburn would have been able to channel the 1998 Tennessee team or 2003 LSU against a USC team that had annhilated them the year before. Would have really helped them.

None of this has anything to do with the fact that an undefeated SEC not getting to play for a title is 100% proof that the system is flawed. But comparing teams from different years really works doesn't it? Try UNLV v. Duke rematch. I gave a basketball version since you are such a fan.

I'd have no problem with "undeserving" major conference champions qualifying for a playoff. In theory, the best team wins in the end.

It really is that simple. Of course some work would have to be done to seed the teams, etc, etc. but that takes too long to type it all out and some self described experts would do a better job than me anyway.

Edit:
Wait a minute, the renowned BCS ranking system ranks teams beyond 16 and we're using that system to determine who is playing in the title game based on #1 vs #2, right? There's a job, the aforementioned seeding, that nobody else has to do. Everybody has been saying the BCS is a much better and acceptable way of doing things, right? And any school ranked above 16 griping about not getting in can be told "sorry, it's the computers fault." See, it's getting simpler all the time.

I'm sorry, but it isn't even close to being that simple. It's fun to talk about what it would be like to have a playoff. It's also fun to talk about flying cars.

By that line of thinking, Fresno State won in 1985 and Boise State is the 2006 champion.
Just stating that it's unfair for a team to go undefeated in their season and have no chance at redemption. The BCS and major bowl games are an elitest concept that is just plain wrong. By the way, how ironic is it that the #2 BCS school, South Florida for crying out loud, is currently losing to Rutgers? Everybody keep on saying all is right in college football and a playoff system is plague.

So BSU fans got to travel to a bowl game and see a win. I know that is why I always played sports. Any player on that BSU team would tell you they could have beaten UF.

I would expect any Duke player to say the same thing. BSU should schedule an SEC team if they want to claim they can beat one. Oh wait, they did. They were destroyed.

Seems to me that a lot of teams are getting weeded out nicely. Next up is Boston College.

Oh wait, they beat the Big 12 champ. Did Duke do that? Big 12 isn't good enough for you?

I didn't realize Auburn added a player the football equivalent of Grant Hill. Lousy comparison.

The Big 12 wasn't any good last year. Otherwise, a team that lost it's star QB and superstar/legendary RB wouldn't have won it. If Boise really wants to compete on a national level, they should join a BCS conference. They don't want to do that, because it will mean three more losses a year, which will mean no BCS bowl, no top 10 ranking, no TV time, etc.

Why do you keep jumping on me with no elaboration regarding your assertions that "it's not even close to being that simple"? Explain why you disagree. People like you would have laughed their ass off just 100 years ago if you told them men would go into outer space and maybe even walk on the moon, so a flying car isn't that far fetched to me.

Ah yes, the ole subjective reasoning of college football. You are surely a BCS pro. I bet you pick games 100% accurately.

I've spoken with Roy Kramer on the issue. He's as big a college football fan as you will ever encounter. He basically invented the BCS. If he could have made it any better, he would have cut off his own legs in order to do so. Like it or not, it's not going to get much better than the current system.
