Will Memphis fire a 21 win coach in his second year?

I don’t think you can. They’ll owe him boatloads of money and will have to go dumpster diving for a coach or hire Kevin Stallings. Neither of which are going to fix the problem they have with the forum

Would be a damn shame

It’s funny they’re on a little run, they had all but fired him and hired Penny, gonna get interesting if he wins another one.

With that said, not like Penny cares what the optics are of him getting that job and buyout wouldn’t change...so if they planned to move on before I’m guessing they still would.

Ok, and I commented on that above. Doesn’t say there isn’t significance in moving from one quadrant to another, just that not all wins are considered equal within a quadrant

It has been a few places today, I’ll look to see if I can find it...it was on Twitter, I follow way too many college basketball & bracketologists so it may be lost in the shuffle...but I definitely remember it being brought up and saying that there wouldn’t be some huge gap in credit given for beating 74 vs. 75.

IIRC the committee guy even said on the reveal show they will dive into each quadrant and that it’s just an easy snapshot.

I think Tubby is underrated.

He turned Minnesota around and made them competitive. When he left, they were a vastly better program than what he inherited. Richard Pitino has subsequently sent them right back into the dumpster.

He then went to Texas Tech - the previous season they were probably the worst major conference team, and one of the worst teams in the country. In three years he had them in the NCAA tournament. Beard spring boarded off that momentum and now they’re on the cusp of a 4 seed with a roster still full of players Tubby recruited.

Yeah that’s my point - they’ll dive into each quadrant. Read: the quadrants are significant. Otherwise it wouldn’t even be mentioned. So there is some significance in the quadrants. What he was saying is that not all wins within a quadrant are treated the same

Tubby is a great floor coach and can coach up players. He is great at a place like Minnesota and Texas Tech where it's difficult to recruit. But he and his staff are simply not good recruiters. Texas Tech's best player was a Tubby recruit, but I believe the next 4 highest scorers on that team were brought in by Beard. Tubby's staff just won't get involved with high level players.

I believe I heard that he doesn't have a conference record better than .500 since he left Kentucky. Memphis is just a different job, and you have to be able to keep local talent.

He has a bad conference record because he inherited dumpster fires. He is a better coach than people give him credit for

Don’t think he really should have to recruit too hard in Memphis. Seems like kids from Memphis are automatically inclined to go there. Even to play for a ****ty coach like Pastner.

Even if you inherit a dumpster fire, at some point you would think you can end up with a winning conference record.

At Memphis, he inherited an assistant who has 4 sons who were either on the team or 4/5 star high schoolers. Tubby forced him out after the first year and hired his own son. That created a serious problem recruiting the city. Tubby just wanted to do it his way, and his way doesn't get players. I don't think his staff recruited any top 100 players at Texas Tech either. Apparently Tubby has said privately that he misjudged the job at Memphis.

And yet he won 21 games this year. Memphis better be certain they can get a better coach or they might be flushing themselves down the ****ter

Just look at those 21 games. Houston was the only good win, and they lost to South Florida and East Carolina, who are both sub 250 RPI teams. They lost to every decent team they played OOC.

Doesn’t matter. Hard to fire a coach w his reputation after a 20+ win season for a first time coach

What’s hard about it??

They can pay Penny peanuts as he’s begging for the job, give him a 3/4 year deal, low buyout...place will be packed first 2 seasons as he loads their roster with 5*. If they suck so what? Can’t be much worse than they are now.

Not a flagrant on Allen, c’mon.

That play happens every time down the floor pretty much.
