I have lived in Memphis and near Memphis for several years and you are underestimating the power of Penny. They would sell 4-5,000 more season tickets almost instantly if he became coach.
He might be a bust as coach, but Tubby is going to sink UM basketball financially if he stays another year. Tubby has sucked all the life out of Memphis Tiger basketball.
Cool. There would certainly be a burst of enthusiasm. And then you need a coach that wins basketball games. Penny has exactly zero proof he can do that
And it wont get any better if Penny Hardaway and comes in and is a bust. Hes very far from a sure fire hire. Pretty much the opposite
But there is proof that Tubby is running the program in the ground. 20 wins versus nobody schools. An empty FedEx Forum. No existent bb donations. Failure to recruit high level local Memphis talent.
Yeah, keep Tubby
You don't know Memphis. The rumor of Penny being coach has people either buying or considering buying season tickets. It's an automatic money maker for at least a couple of years. He will bring some players. Even if he isn't great as a floor coach, the talent alone will win games.
Lol.
Look at these Memphis fans in here with their blue colored glasses. I dont deny he will bring excitement and maybe some recruits. Memphis has never had much of a problem with recruits. You need a good coach. And its a big gamble to assume Penny is going to be a better one than Tubby
20 wins is never evidence of anyone running a program into the ground. That is complete nonsense
Trust me it can get worse. And if you hire penny hardaway, theres a chance you might see it. Memphis fans were spoiled for years. They think theyre entitled to be among the basketball elite but its not reality. They risk becoming a hell of a lot worse than winning 20 games
Look, I grew up in Memphis. I don't root for them anymore because I went to UT, and I didn't like Calipari. But Memphis hangs it hat on basketball. That's what you think about when you talk about the school. It is better than 6th place in the AAC and being picked 9th in conference. Instead of losing by 20+ to its rival Cincinnati, they should be playing tight games, like Penny and Nick Van Exel did multiple times. Memphis football has become good, but its history is terrible. At some point, it could fall back into place, and basketball has to carry its weight. I enjoy all of your metrics and research, but you have to understand Memphis. Worst attendance this year in 48 years. I am younger than that. I hate it that outside people think that a Memphis guy has to turn the program around. There are other coaches that can do it, but Penny is the cheapest option. He already makes millions and wants his alma mater doing well. Unfortunately, the Tubby experience just isn't working.

This. Tubby can't recruit.
I laughed at your comment about Penny already coaching better talent in high school. That's funny. He has like 2 top 50 2019 players on his team and a connection to a 3rd. Has another top 100 player.
8 of those games came in Nov and Dec against teams no one has ever heard of. They might have a chance of a NIT bid after today's win, but they were not even borderline before conference tourney for NIT.
