College Hoops Around The Country [TN opponents, RPI, others]

The original point is that TN hired a good coach and that there were few UT fans that were glad to see him quit. Jerry Green owes his 4 20s and 4x NCAATs to KO being a good coach. His results AFTER UT aren’t relevant.

Oof, rough take. He was 11-16, 14-15, and 11-16. People were ecstatic to see him go. Were you around at the time?

There's a reason he left UT to go to a school who had won two conference championships (both in the 1930s) and (up until 2017) had never made the ncaa tournament.

Spoiler: it wasn't because he was good

Most weren’t ecstatic to see O’Neill quit. He had just landed the best PG recruit in the history of TN basketball. And how many more games do you think he’d have won had Dickey let him play Isiah Victor?

It’s a totally false narrative to suggest that KO ran away from TN and off to hide at Northwestern. Dickey was a crappy boss and KO was over him.

Remind us of Victor’s issue as I’ve forgotten.

NCAA eligibility. Dickey wouldn’t let O’Neill play him even though the NCAA and SEC weren’t preventing it. Academics iirc. Maybe questions about his high school grades or the entrance exam. He played the next 4 years without any issues.

This helps to provide clarity. Thank you. Now. Can we return to roundy ball around the ncaa discussion? 😘

I didn't know anyone who knew basketball who was glad to see him go. The feeling was that he had things going in the right direction.

O'Neil's teams were TERRIBLE--some of the worst in the history of the program. There were high-school teams with better offenses....the guy
was awful.
