Comparing Pearl to some of nation's elite coaches

He has done a very good job taking us from bottom-dwellers to a top 20 program...no denying that.

Most are happy with the results based on what UT was before Pearl, indeed you have to give him credit for creating a standard at UT but this is year 5 and he needs to start raising the bar, even if it's by a hair.

We need to stop the " Well, we are Tennessee talk " because UT is a top 20 program and has the ability to be a top 10 program but in order to do that Pearl has got to recruit better and has to actually develop that talent.

A lot will be riding on next years class to contribute right away. We will see what happens.

I'm certain I can find more elite coaches who fit the billing of Pearl's early tournament failures. I picked the five that came to my head first. I give you credit for finding my mistake(s).

But just think hypothetically this one question: Would you still be critical of Pearl if he had not lost that 17 point lead against OSU?

No. If he had won it would have bought me more patience.

If he does not make it past the Sweet 16 this year will you stop trying to inflate his accomplishments by fabricating and downplaying the accomplishments of other coaches?

Expecting a Sweet 16 this year is lunacy...pure and simple.

Maybe next year. Probably not.

It'll depend on the matchups in the tourney for me. If Pearl loses or struggles with a team that we should handle, then obviously my defense will weaken.

And I have no intention of inflating Pearl's accomplishments. I am, in no way, one of those fans that gives Pearl unconditional love. Up until you pointed out my mistakes, I was merely stating facts and trying to take an objective view of things. I just think Pearl is getting too much heat for what he hasn't done in the tournament. 2 sweet 16's isn't fantastic, but it isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

I'm a proud Pearl Slurper or whatever its called. The guy has done wonders for UT. When I was there in the early to mid 90's TBA was the atmosphere of a morgue. I live overseas now and when I get to catch a UT game on tv, I'm blown away of how TBA is now. Pearl is a great coach for Tennessee!

oh yeah, Tennessee was a basketball giant when Pearl took over. I mean look at all those Sweet 16 banners!

There was a reason I picked those coaches to research.

you get a banner for a sweet 16 appearance?havent noticed, but i hope we arent hanging them up.

He has done something NO other coach has done in 7 years this year despite starting 9 different line-ups. So there's that. He's the best bball coach we've had in a long time. What, u want Wade or Buzz back???

DONT forget Jerry!

And I'll be very happy never to see Prince cherry pick another 2 points ever again after this year.

You call it cherry picking, I'll call it hustle. Being the first guy down the court on a deflection/steal is hustle and determination.

JP does way too much for this team to not be missed. You'll see.

Didn't Roy Williams inherit a program that was on probation?

I believe he inherited one year of probation but considering their record in his first year, it's doubtful they would've even made the tournament.

I messed my initial stats up, anyways.

So of the coaches whose records you chose to compare to Pearl’s; the majority of them made it past the Sweet 16 within their 1st 4 years and 2 of them won Regional Championships and made it to the National Championship game. Correct?

Fixed my stats. All I'm saying is that there are elite coaches out there who have had trouble advancing past the sweet 16 early in their careers.

This is moot thread.
Final Fours the next 2 years at least.
Pearls banners won't need to be hung with velcro like Cal's
There will be no denying how awesome Pearl or UT is.
V,b.

Enlighten me.

Have you read this thread?

My bad about Donovan. He reached the finals in his fourth year? But Williams at Kansas didn't reach the elite 8 until his fifth year.

So the grand total becomes 2.

What did Roy do 90-91 his 3rd year?

okay, missed on that as well. I'm an idiot.

Even if the point isn't as clear as it was before, it's still 5 of the top of coaches who have established themselves throughout the years reaching the elite 8 a combined 3 times out of 20 possible tries.

Which is why I took Donovan out and put Gary Williams in.

That was a subtle change, especially when you simply stated that you fixed your stats and did not mention changing the coaches. You changed the original post so that it fit better with your hypothesis. I bet that you did real well in science class; decide the outcome before the experiment.

So in your mind’s eye, Gary Williams is equivalent to the other 4 that you grouped him with?

It was a subtle change yes, but it was a legit change. And it's not really changing my hypothesis because my entire point was to name a few coaches who have had similar early tournament failures. How am I changing my overall point?

I don't think Gary Williams is exactly equivalent to the other 4, but I would consider him "elite".

And I have done really well in science classes, thanks for asking.

The sleeping giant reference is correct. Analysts often commented that if TN could ever get a coach and a few good players, TN could easily carry that momentum with the rabid fan base, excellent facilities, and high athletic budget that the university has.
Any big university in the country would be considered a sleeping giant if the criteria is just getting a good coach and good players! LOL

I like Bruce but unless he makes an Elite 8 or Final Four appearance, I will be utterly disappointed with his coaching.

Yep. And, I really, really don't care that there are those on sports message boards who spend countless hours of their time setting up moving screens to convince someone else to despise the guy - like they do - for whatever reasons real or imagined.

So if Pearl made it to the Regional Championship once, just once, then you wouldn't be a critic of him? Let's just say he didn't blow that 17 point lead to Ohio St...you wouldn't mind him as a coach at all?

Look when you are dealing with ignorance such as in the case of Vol Dad just ask him who he would replace Pearl with. His answer will most likely be a put down of some sorts. He will never give you an answer b/c that would show you how high his bball ignorance is. I mean really anyone that isnt impressed with what Pearl has done here is just flat out ignorant.

Good one. So solid I'll just copy it so it's avaliable for later. Any more top shelf posting advice?
