Confidence level in the 2016 recruiting class? (merged)

JoeJuan was never UT's to lose so I am not sure why that is considered a disappointing loss and as far as Christmas goes its Louisiana and for whatever reason LSU seems to be able to pull pretty much anybody they want. The other two were asked to wait so I don't really blame them.

I've had relatives in Louisiana all my life. Visited several times as a youth and lived there for three. Unless you've lived there it's hard to believe how that all the kids all dream of going to LSU...just incredible in-state loyalty from some very good athletes.

GO VOLS!

I'm just stimulating discussion. Better than just only threads based on one specific player. I don't see what's wrong with talking about the class as a whole and how you think it shapes out. But okay, go ahead and act like this is a "melt down" thread and not just a simple discussion on what you think happens from here.

NO worries, there are a handful of posters that like to make fun of good threads.

The recruiting picture IS cause for concern.

With the latest several kids de-committing, it will be difficult for us unless something drastically changes, for us to even break the top 20.... Also, for those saying oh, "its just a down year", how is it the same several schools seem to be in the top 10 just about every year and never seem to have "a down year" in recruiting... we shouldn't be having down years this early in his career at UT.... I am worried kids are seeing through his used car salesman type style and are going other places...

I'm not sure why some get so offended by folks asking a question. It's a legit concern.

OP, sure, there has been some concerning news the past few weeks but we don't always know everything going on behind the scenes. Based on his track record, I still have confidence that Butch will close strong until he proves otherwise.

I was thinking yesterday that we need a hotlist thread to track guys we are after these last couple of months. Might be a fun way to keep tabs on the guys we are looking to close on.

Fingers, you sir are the MVP of this board. Always bringing info and level headed takes on recruiting.

There are condescending @ssholes at every turn. IMO, when one does not like a thread, kindly move on to the next one without displaying your lack of character.

What hurts with losing Christmas-Giles was when he was a 2 star we were the only power 5 conference school to offer him. Once his star rating went up things changed.

So, how do you think this shakes out?

Someone mentioned here that the avg star rating is the real indicator, and that is the key number to keep an eye on.

Right now the Vols are at #9 with a 3.53. As long as this stays above 3.5, we should be right around 10-15 - which would be considered successful.

I'm not concerned. Lots of names will pop up over the next few months. I think all of the coaching changes have made a lot of late additions possible which is why we're trimming some fat from the class now.

I wouldn't sweat the critics either op. I think people were just a little stirred up by some of the recent negative posters regarding recruiting. I see no problem with the original post.

That'd be awesome. It would also be cool to assign prospects with different colors ranging from interest level.

I understand the concern. If we miss on a few more of these big targets I will become more concerned. Something to remember on the Dline. We redshirted 2 Defensive Ends this year(Darrell Taylor and Andrew Butcher) , so technically you can say we already had 2 Defensive Ends in this class with both being RS freshman next year. I'd still like to see 1 more high school DE. We have a very good JUCO DT in Alexis Johnson. If we can land one high school DT we will be in good shape there as well. Hopefully we can land 5* Derrick Brown or 4* Tyler Clark.

Hopefully we get some good news here in the next few weeks, and everyone can relax and enjoy the class.

Agreed. I was thinking we're okay on DL. I mean I would love to have more awesome DL but I think there are more areas of concern. To me, I think we need 1 or 2 more CBs. With Sutton possibly leaving, Foreman leaving, and injuries and attrition. I think we were exploited earlier in this season from the lack of depth.

To the original question, my confidence is not shaken in any significant way. Recruiting is a strange game. I've followed this stuff obsessively since the late 90s, and I've learned not to get too worked up about these twists and turns. Sure, I get excited about certain prospects, I boom when when we pick up commitments, and sometimes I get bummed out about missing out on players I really like, but I'll save the real celebration (or despair as the case may be) until Feb.

A little perspective...I keep seeing posts that say we were basically done by this time last year. But actually this time last year Darrin Kirkland was uncommitted, Sheriron Jones and John Kelly were barely a blip on our radar, we were freaking out that Justin Martin and Kyle Phillips looked like LSU leans, Drew Richmond was committed to Ole Miss, and some folks were bashing the staff for reaching on guys like Joc Bruce, Kyle Oliver, and yes, Chance Hall. A lot can happen in the final month and a half. If I were a betting man, my money would still be on Butch finishing strong.

really?
you two don't think we slipped a bit this past weekend...
unless Butch has some real gems up his sleeve in this dead period...

we knew class would be down with numbers but it took a big hit this weekend...

could drop out of top 20 or worse. wasn't that high to begin with and I understand we are addressing needs.

Not a good weekend at all for UT recruiting...losing commitments and others going elsewhere versus here....

What say you.

We lost one guy that no one would have cared about if he wouldn't have gotten a bump in the rankings. The coaches obviously thought the other two guys couldn't play here because they were told to look elsewhere. VQ has been saying for months that JoeJuan Williams wasn't a priority and the only guy that went elsewhere was Jordan Smith and he had only been decommited from South Carolina for a week. Nate Johnson had been offered for a few days so not a long term target. None of it was the end of the world.
