Confident USU Fans (blue cool-aid)

secondary: definite unknown. probably better in coverage at the safety position, but definitely not at CB. they seem solid though. compared to the auburn game, they're much better. why you think they are "a poor secondary" is beyond me. You know as much about how good our secondary is as I do about how good Butch is in bed (a little based on internet videos, but not enough to even make a wild stab at it)

returning 3/4 LBs seems like a very good thing to me. Especially when one is projected as a first round NFL pick. I don't get how you're starting off with that to show we aren't better.

OL is much smaller? than what? last year? no it isn't. the one that played wisconsin and auburn? HECK NO it isnt. Tennessee's? why would that matter? especially in a conversation about comparing this year's team to last year's? (and it's only a 10 pound difference anyway)

The interior of the D Line is not as strong or experienced:
The interior of the DL is one of the strongest units on our team. there are parts of our team that aren't experienced. this isn't one of them.

kicking:
it is better now, even when its not good, than it was then. I'm not saying its good. I'm saying it is better than it was. we got to the 15 yard line against wisconsin and missed a FG to win the game. would have gone to the orange bowl if we made it. that's bad. it has improved, but isn't as good as we want, obviously. same kickers did well last year though.

as for QB/RB:

we aren't better at RB. we had three NFL backs on the roster for auburn.

Qb: better better better.

Here's where I'm at, Ficklez. See if this makes sense.

Looking at the 2013 USU schedule and results, the Vols would beat EVERY team that USU beat. Fair statement? I think so.

Now, your losses:
Utah
USC
BYU
Boise State
Fresno State

The Vols would have beaten every team in your L column with the (possible) exception of USC, as they beat some pretty good teams, but lost to some pretty bad teams as well.

The big difference is we've gotten better in year 2 under Butch Jones. Faster, more depth, more talent, more experience, a better understanding of his system. I encourage you to checkout the results of his first year at Cinci (4-8), compared to his 2nd year at Cinci (10-3). I'm sorry, but Tennessee is going to absolutely manhandle Utah State. If it weren't UT, and USU we're playing Ole Miss, Georgia, Carolina, Florida, Miss State, Arkansas, etc etc...I'd say the exact same thing. You guys would simply get curb stomped by any team in our conference. It's not an opinion, it's just the way it is.

ficklez, not sure why you keep posting that same stuff as if it is scary or something. You have a guy that may be a first rounder. Congratulations... but there were probably around 10 1st rounders in this draft that UT has played in the last couple of years. When you play in the SEC you see NFL caliber players every week.

Your problem though isn't your stars. Your problem is the players in between... your weak spots.

Not to mention, we beat the team last year that had the NUMBER 1 pick, who was also a DB. USC, Clowney. So the whole "future NFL 1st rounder" doesn't exactly scare us...

I don't think you would have beaten all of those. BYU/Boise/Utah/Fresno/USC would all be close. You could win any of them, but I doubt all of them. I doubt more than 3 of them. But fresno, byu, boise all came without keeton or hill.

What if florida was playing an FCS team? stomp right? what if tennessee was playing an fcs transition team? stomp right?

5 SEC teams either lost to a non P5 school or came within one score of losing last year.

Not sure how you can say that considering the guys you lost. I think your team has been very well coached over the past few years. Not sure Wells is up to Andersen's bar yet but you field a well coached team.

IIRC, you guys are nervous that Gray won't be available. Some have implied he's your best CB. We know him. Very fast kid. But he lacked the skills and physicality to play in the SEC and left UT. Your official roster still has him at 170 lbs. If he's your best or even your fastest... you're in trouble.

The guys that were solid last year that we lost were largely unproven, with the exception of Lawson, who was a two year starter before last year. Tay Glover-Wright saw the field some as a nickel, but not much. Starting SS Maurice Alexander who is now in the NFL played OLB his entire career and had to learn a new position at FS. He was unknown as well. Year before CB Will Davis was an unknown before being drafted into the league. Year before that CB Curtis Marsh was drafted into the league after not seeing much PT.
My point here isn't that it's going to be easy to replace those guys, my point is that the program over the last 5 years has had at least one guy a year have solid years and make the NFL off the strength of that performance, especially in the secondary. I think we have one NFL guy in the secondary in Suite and if I had to guess a 2nd I'd say Rashard Stewart would be most likely.

congrats on going 1-24 vs the last 25 ranked teams you played. I now see why you will stomp us.

you can't lose to these teams then claim you're used to seeing that talent. .

Um, yeah you can. We play the toughest schedule in the nation year in and year out, we aren't going to be intimidated or scared to play NFL talent.

Ask Clowney.

we play nickel twice as often as not. Sutera will be blitzing most plays. the guy he replaces blitzed 80% plus of the time.

This style of play will get you beat...badly.

Say what you want about our QB but he is a senior.

what style? the style that earned you the 10th worst defense in the country last year?

congrats on the senior QB. Wish we had one of those.

i wish we had more 185 pound running backs to go behind that 290lb O line.

we were like 83rd in total D after playing Oregon, Bama, Mizzou, Auburn, UGA, Carolina, etc. Far from 10th worst in the nation. Actually most defenses you played were behind us even. I noticed WKU was two spots behind USU on total defense. Its easy to look good when you have the 117th rated SOS.

Ficklez, I'll be in Section Z13, row 24, seat 3. I will hand you a $100 bill if the Vols lose to your bull$hit, mid-major team.

Again, you've all turned this into "LOOK WHO ELSE WE PLAY." All I did was say we are better now than we were three years ago. It doesn't matter who you play for that conversation. It doesn't even matter if you're better than us at every position. All that I was doing was showing we have improved since we played at auburn. No comment on how that will affect this game. No comment on who will win this game. Just that we are better at almost each position. But you all can't read "our linebackers are better than they were last year" without thinking i'm making a personal dig at your SEC pals. I'm not. I never did.

You play nickel and blitz your D will get burned...often and very badly. Our QB could have a career day.

These mid-major fans cannot accept the fact that we would have similar, if not better, records with their schedules. During our worst stretch in school history.

They just can't fathom the logic.

cool straw man. That's exactly what I said. EXACTLY what my point was. Yeah, me saying "our QB is better now than 4 years ago. Our WRs are deeper than they were 4 years ago" was actually meant to be read as "your SOS is worse than USU's"

Cool story. guess nobody can play nickel against your awesome power. go buy your natty tickets now.

and a career day? what is that, 200 yards? congrats on that. he could throw for 210 yards, 2 tds and 3 picks and it'd be the best game of his career.

No, but you DO keep spouting out nonsense about our defenses rank and yours. It would be flip flopped if the schedules were vice versa.

7 of the defenses USU played last yr were rated lower than UTs. Now look at our schedule last yr and then look at those 7 teams schedule.

One of those Defenses even sacked you 8 times in 1 game.

The other only lost by 4 points and it took a late 4th qtr score by USU to do so.

I think UT will be ok

WKU was also top 15 in total defense too. Right behind USU.

why don't you tell me what that defense with the sacks was ranked in the stat for sacks on the season? then tell me what tennessee was ranked in sacks
