Convince me that Martin isn't Buzz Peterson

1. Martin never inherited a team that made the Elite 8 and finished in the NIT.

Bingo.

Peterson took over a strong team at Tulsa and made them significantly worse. He did the same at UT, when he took over a team with four returning starters, and five straight NCAA berths, and somehow went 15-16.

Martin took over a .500 team, had a bad first season (albeit not with four returning starters), and then won 24 and then 26 games. He even threw in a meaningless postseason tournament title (last year's CIT) like Buzz did.

3 games difference doesn't convince me. Not bad points though.

I could be wrong, but isn't the Southern Conference also a lower level than the MVC? Either way, Martin has made a solid turn around there. He has shown consistent improvement. Buzz just seemed to hang around the same level and then sucked at Tulsa.

2. Doug Dickey didn't hire Martin
3. Grunfeld thinks Martin is a good hire.
4. Peterson has won more than 23 games in 2 of 13 years. Martin has won more than 23 games in 2 of 3 years.
5. Martin took a team from 3-15 to 15-3 in two years.

6. Martin was not roommates with Michael Jordan.

Convincing you is a waste of time. It's all moot at this point. We have a coach and until we see how the team plays ball and how recruiting goes, it's just talk.

I will tell you that the TU folks weren't happy with Buzz ball and were surprised to see us take him. Mo. St. folks seem very happy with Cuonzo ball.

Well yes, but isn't this entire board a waste of time?

The point about the fans of the former team is a good one.

Point is that there is no convincing. There is very little publicly available history as to Martin's ability to be the head coach at UT. Almost any point to the positive is refutable and vice versa.

Still interesting back and forth, IMO.

Much.

Southern Conference is probably in the bottom 1/3 of Div 1 conferences.

The Valley is on average one of the three or four best non-BCS conferences.

He won't be as "good" as Buzz. Sad, but true. I give him 3 years then we get a real coach after we geta real AD.

2, 3, and 4 don't tell me anything.

On 4, Peterson won at least 21 games in 3 of his first 4 years.

2 doesn't tell you anything? Were you around when Dickey was doing the hiring?

To make this comparison after the guy has had 4 days on the job would be impossible as you already know. I do believe that both of these men are decent and honorable. Can decent and honorable succeed in today's SEC? I would like to hope so. He is going to be faced with challenge that all coaches at UT have, he isn't going to have many if any big time players at his door. He will have to make a decision on how he goes about getting his players. Does concentrate on a particular area? (Atlanta/Chicago having he and his assistants becoming well known to the coaches in those areas) Does he just go after the players that he sees fitting in what he is trying to do, no matter where they are?

If he succeeds in getting players, along with his other qualities, the skys the limit. The strange part about Buzz Peterson was that he left several players (Loften/Smith/Bradshaw/Wingate) that provided Pearl with just what he needed for his system and early success. I am afraid that Pearl (unless the 2 NBA possibilities stay) has not returned the favor to Coach Martin.

WINGATE! I threw up in my mouth on that one! I think he set an SEC record as center for the most games without a single rebound. Smith a walk on? Watson, OK. Pearl leaves Martin with 2 5 star players, 2 5 star recruits and a top 25 program. Night and day.

Buzz could never get his team to properly defend the 3/4 court shot at the buzzer. . .and sources tell me Coach Zo really sells the

Their first 3 years are very similar. If you can't see the possibility of him failing here, then I don't know what else to say.

Come on man. What do you mean about their first three years? They obviously coached at different schools at different times. You're trying to compare kumquats to hamsters.
