Convince me that Martin isn't Buzz Peterson

Come on man. What do you mean about their first three years? They obviously coached at different schools at different times. You're trying to compare kumquats to hamsters.

Have 2 head coaches ever coached at the same school at the same time?

I think you have to weigh the pros and cons of the new coach:

Pros:

1) Good college player who played briefly in the NBA
2) NCAA experience as a player and assistant coach
3) Should relate to players and recruit well, has a similar background and was a recruited high school player himself

Cons:

1) Win/Loss record is no better then the previous head coach's last 3 seasons
2) Graduated 4 seniors in his starting line-up, would be rebuilding the team at Missouri State next year, this season should have been a peak season instead they failed to qualify for the NCAA
3) No NCAA tournament games as head coach, struggled to win big games to qualify for the tournament
4) Only 3 years experience as a head coach

Their first 3 years are very similar. If you can't see the possibility of him failing here, then I don't know what else to say.

Possibility? Of course there's that possibility.

But saying there's a possibility of failure and comparing the dude to Peterson are two vastly different things.

Come to think about it, has anyone ever seen Buzz and Zo at the same time? Hmmm..... If only Buzz wore glasses.

WINGATE! I threw up in my mouth on that one! I think he set an SEC record as center for the most games without a single rebound. Smith a walk on? Watson, OK. Pearl leaves Martin with 2 5 star players, 2 5 star recruits and a top 25 program. Night and day.

What Pearl inherited, was Watson(the only former UT player currently in the NBA), Smith(who barely missed out on making the NBA), and Lofton(Mr. Clutch).

Pearl leaves Martin with two five star players looking at the NBA draft and Hopson has yet to live up to his billing IMO. He also leaves him with two four star recruits, not five, who are reconsidering their options. Now looking at who is DEFINATELY coming back, which players have proven themselves?

I think he will be good. You have to give him a chance if you are a fan. Everyone I talk to that knows more about him really respects him.

I think it's possible he fails worse than Peterson.

The OP makes an excellent point. I mean has anyone here seen Buzz and Cuonzo in the same room at the same time? I bet Cuonzo is actually Buzz in disguise!

After you calm down from your throwing up episode, the 2 5 start that you speak of may or may not comeback.
Wingate played very well for Bruce until he could not put the reefer down. Smith was a great player. Watson, NBA player. 1 five star released. Other has yet to qualify. Last time I checked, UT was not a top 25 program. You conveniently left out the sanctions.

I don't know that you could really call him a safe hire. He has limited experience, looks more like a filler guy to me. Someone to hold to fort down during the sanctions, that's about all i see. There is definitely no pop to this hire what so ever, just kind of a who? Just like Dooley.

This board has an interesting cast of characters. Some of you have enough animosity towards Bruce Pearl that you could actually be the owner of the salon, "Alimonys" in disguise. Others of you seem content with mediocrity, as long as it means the NCAA doesn't know our name. Others of you don't seem to be Tennessee fans at all. Others, on the other hand, think that if we were to spend enough money both Adoph Rupp and Bear Bryant would return from their great reward to begin wearing orange.

And now to top things off, I see a Geno Auriema avatar.

What kind of place is this?

You going to add anything to this thread or just stereotype people? It's a message board with opinions that are all over the place. Not to different from any other message board.

I have nothing against Cuonzo, but have this feeling. He seems like an incredibly likable guy who had a short run of success at a smaller school.

That is your problem, seeing that Martin has yet to coach a game at UT. You need to deal withyour own problem.

Or discuss our basketball coach on a message board.

JMO, but it seems to me that you are not asking for a true convincing that would lead to conversion, but rather a validation of your already developed opinion that Coach Martin is Coach Peterson. You have your mind made up and nothing that anyone can say is going to cause you to change your opinion. The only true measure of Coach Martin will come in the late fall when basketball season rolls around again. You asking this question now is like someone asking you if you still beat your wife, there is no correct answer to be give.

Please tell me what brought you to this conclusion. Was it me saying several times that I haven't formed an opinion yet? Was it me accepting some arguments that make sense to me and rejecting the ones that don't?

I see similarities in the type of hire. I certainly see differences. I will root for him like he's family, but I just have a bad feeling about it. I hope I'm wrong and readily admit this feeling is based on almost nothing.

The very question that you have to be convinced CM is not BuzzP is enough to bring me to that conclusion. I am all for anyone expressing their opinion about any and all things related to UT, but I see no corelation between the two coaches. Totally different people and totally differnt styles. Should equal totally different outcomes.

This is unreasonable to me. I didn't mean he's going to be exactly like him. Just that he would have the same impact on UT.

This is the point that I was trying to make in my original post. It seems your mind is made up. Thats okay if it is, it is your's to do with what you will. But as for me, I am willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and hope that he can build on the success of the program Bruce re-built here.
