Cooper Mays possibly out for Florida

Hernia surgery sucks. After my first one they didn't want me to pick up a gallon of milk which is ridiculous for a man my size. They didn't want me to swim, bike, or anything except walk.

Cooper might be working some but not much because tearing the thing completely ends his year.

I had one just to the left of my belly button. The residual pain from that surgery sucked and lingered for like 3 months.

Addison Nichols step right up! I believe he will be a baller. 247 Composite 4* .9422, #6 IOL in the country. Offers from Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, USC, Bama, Clemson, Florida State, LSU, and Michigan. That kid has talent! Knock the rust off the first two games, and let em' eat some Gator!!

Nichols isn’t practicing at Center anymore. It’s Ollie Lane and Dayne Davis behind him.

So if the OL does well against Virginia how would you feel about the unit as a whole? Still question marks or are they pretty comfortable?

I’m not a coach or an expert. I just know the coaches think this will be a tough test. I’m encouraged to hear that Ellarbee and Hazleton feel like the line is gelling. No way it will be the same as with Mays, but if we can get to they bye week without a loss, maybe he’ll be back at full strength going into the rough stretch.

First problem is that you're listening to Basilio or at least doing so believing anything he reports. He is LOUDLY wrong... frequently. He seems to have had access and connections in the AD in the past. I think he had a lot of links during Fulmer. But if you were a HC... would you trust him with insider info? AP and Hubbs don't report what they've been asked not to report... and they surely don't embellish it.

Guessing Hubbs wants to keep his Saturday gig.

It’s from one of Basilio’s cohorts (ORANGE THROAT) on his blog this morning.
The Tony Basilio Show
click on the blog for the report…you don’t have to listen to Basilios show.
just click on the link to READ the blog report….scroll down a little to ORANGE THROAT section.
“Cooper’s out forever, alien snatched!!”

Lol. Center is the hardest position to replace on the OL. You can’t just slide anyone there.
I think you would agree that Heupel knowing that and having 3 years to do something about it would have built some depth, right?

People are going to panic over something... this just looks like the soup du jour. If this ends up being a long absence then I will be surprised if Nichols doesn't eventually take over and be a gamer. It sounds like he has the needed talent. I'm not sure Ball would be a very good investment at this point in his career.

Please don't give too much credence to the content from Tony's show.
Yeah, if it were GoVols 247 or even Hubbs, I'd pay more attention. Basilio is sophomoric and a mouth....well...when he's not stuffing it with food on the air. Between his eating, soda belching and commercials, there's not that much real content. And it's not really content. He's just shooting the chit with his buddies. Some of the silliest stuff being thrown out...kinda like you'd expect from a high school kid. No professionalism. Just an immature wannabe who puts things out there hoping for something to stick or to create a stir in to get some attention...any attention.

Yeah it’s just not as simple to say oh well next man up and just expect the backup to be as good as Cooper. I think it was Hubbs that said without Cooper the offense won’t be able to operate at the same tempo. Centers call out protections. Very complicated and important position. I am not that worried about it but I am just not expecting Coopers backup to be as good as he is right this minute.

There was some minor talk that Cooper Mays might declare after last year so there's no doubt Heupel has been thinking about the position for awhile.

I'd like to see Mays play this year, be a leader in the front, and maybe nudge his draft stock up a little. The more draft buzz we have around our program, the better chances we have for recruiting against Bama, GA, etc for elite talent.

Heupel is "the new guy" when going up against Saban, Smart, Dabo, even Kelly and Jimbo. We need all the buzz we can get about getting guys in the league and I'm hoping Cooper can help that.

A rumor sends yall over the ledge. BVS is real.

Stop clicking the bait if you can't distinguish between reality and talking heads making up stories to fill time.

I actually stopped listening to one Vols podcast because they were blatantly trying to foment a QB controversy when there isn't the slightest inkling of one. Made my life better. Don't need the added drama.

But you’re on a sports message board, ground zero for rumors.

Have a gruden.

I can distinguish between rumors and reality, and I definitely don't allow a rumor to influence my thoughts on the upcoming season, especially when they haven't played a single snap.

Isn’t Ollie Lane the backup? He’s like a 10th year senior. He knows the system
This. Guys like Ollie Lane and Da(y)ne Davis may not be the most talented, but they’ve been in the program a long time. Players who are that seasoned can be sneakily good.

Edit: That said, I’m a little skeert about Cooper if I’m honest, and I’m the above is partly my attempt to talk myself off the ledge.

Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld once reminded reporters and nation you go to war with the military you have, not the one you wait for or wish you had. It's the same way in college football. You play the games with the players available to take the field on game day. Hopefully Cooper becomes available before we really need him in the SEC games, but we'll show up and play when scheduled with what we have.

The possible silver lining here is that Mays being out has allowed Lane to develop at Center and Karic/Nichols to develop at LG. If Mays isn’t back by the Florida game, we should still win that game and Lane will be settled in at Center. It sounds like Karic has made strides lately and they’ve decided that Nichols isn’t a C, so he’s only practicing at G and T now.

Ultimately, Tennessee is creating depth on the OLine. By the time Mays is back, Tennessee should still be undefeated, but with more guys along the OLine we can trust.

That is the best case scenario.
I certainly hope you are correct.
