Could be the biggest underachieving team in UT history

Half of the NCAAT field goes 0-1 and those teams are below average. The teams that start out 1-0 are above average. Half of the 1-0 teams are in the 50th-75th percentile.

Batting .500 in baseball is well above average. If you didn't understand the sport, you'd have to research it. Or...I guess you could just believe that anything that is .500 is just average.

What coach is going to impress you then?

I will be honest. Rick Pitino.

I could have easily said a coach who didn't get in trouble with the ncaa but I have been a Pitino fan since I was kid.

I am no longer a Kentucky fan as i can't stand Calipari but i loved watching Pitino go full court press back in the day. His teams always brought it.

To put things in perspective... prior to Coach K's arrival at Duke, the Blue Devils were 7th all-time in Final Four appearances. Today, they are 4th all-time.

Tennessee, meanwhile, is tied for 104th all-time with 0 appearances.

That's very interesting.

Getting into the NCAAT field puts a program into about the 80th percentile. So winning the first game bumps that up to about the 90th percentile.

Rick Pitino is an awesome coach but I don’t think White will ever consider him considering the NCAA trouble he was involved in at UL.

Duke was in the national title game against Kentucky just two years before K was hired.
In fact, K inherited a team that went to the Elite Eight and he didn’t even make the tournament until his fourth year. If that had happened here in the internet age, the forum would be filled with “Fire K” threads.

I don’t think he will ever get another big job. He’s pushing 70 now so it’s not like anyone would get many years out of him anyway. Not worth the risk considering his lengthy NCAA rap sheet.

Coach K hasn't won an outright regular season ACC title since 2006. Has only won 2 outright since 2002.

I think Pitino is very closed to burned out so it would be a very risky decision but man he would give Calipari fits. Think he retires from Iona.

I grew up 5 miles from the border. They only played KY basketball and UT football then. I was a fan of both and the 90s were awesome as a fan for me. Not gonna lie or pretend. It was winning and more winning.

When rick went to the nba I moved to ohio and stopped following a specific ncaam basketball team. I was more a rick fan than a blue fan. I really enjoyed his coaching style. I was a Louisville fan while he was there.

The only team I have ever followed without interruption has been the tn vols football team which has been a real blast the last 20 years lol. I still follow wv to a degree for both bball and football. I like Huggins as a coach but I can't decide whether drunk Huggins or sober Huggins is the better coach.

That's cool, so u have no love for UT Basketball and are completely giving us your unbiased opinion on Barnes, right ? Well, I can respect that more than a Vols fan dogging Barnes because the grass is always greener

I am not emotionally invested in UT basketball. I root for TN when they play anyone but WV as I was born there but I dont wanna throw up or put my fist through a wall like i do with TN football. I still root for TN football over wv but part of me still bleeds mountaineer so I am slightly torn....fortunately it rarely happens.

I liked Pearl alot. I think Pearl may be the next Pitino eventually. I understand that puts me in the pearl crowd but I really, really miss him and liked him. He just seems like a really good dude.

This team has been overrated for the most part. Lack of size, quality depth, and overall shooting Consistency has reared its ugly head on more than one occasion. Expectations as usual for Tennessee fans is always blown out of portion. You’re what your record says you are. Still time for change but it’ll take improved shooting for that to happen. The other two ain’t happening this year.

I think that his biggest lies were told to his bosses at UT rather than the NCAA. He lied about failed drug tests by players. He needed to go. Flawed character and the run wasn’t sustainable with his leadership. It was fun. I’m glad he’s gone.
Character doesn’t win ballgames. I wouldn’t care if Pearl was an ex-prison guard of a Soviet gulag - he won.

It’s not the University’s fault that Pearl got fired.

He was dishonest to the NCAA and to his bosses.

You Pearl lovers never like to tell the full story on why he screwed himself out of the job.

I said six weeks ago this team only had two weaknesses---they cannot stay in front of anyone on defense and they cannot shoot. That was before(in my opinion) Barnes has made a mess of the rotation by not deciding how to integrate one and dones with the existing roster.
As it stands , I have seen Vandy play last two games and will be surprised if Tenn wins. They are not even an average team now--top teams will blow them out of gymn. Fortunately there are no "good" teams in the SEC---ie could win two games in tourney

There are an impressive amount of inaccuracies in this post for just four lines

I think it’s up for debate. I think the reality is this team was overrated from before the season even started. Media picked UT to win SEC. They flat got it wrong. We’re not as talented as they made everyone believe we were. We have no size(no front court). Vescovi can’t cover anyone. And our offense is horrific. Outside of that, we’re not bad.
I agree spot on. Every 5 star is not the same and everyone thought two was the magic potion. Springer is not that athletic and Johnson is like so many AAU kids very athletic and cannot shoot. From there the roster was decidedly average. If you saw Ohio ST-Michigan and think would could stay on floor with either I would be amazed----and they are not Zags or Baylor. No the expectations and evaluations on this team were dead wrong.
