A public school administrator in Indiana went viral after posting a video explaining that Indiana schools are teaching Critical Race Theory and intentionally deceiving concerned parents about whether or not their children are being subjected to it.

"When we tell you that our schools aren’t teaching Critical Race Theory, that it’s nowhere in our standards, that’s misdirection," Indianapolis district science coordinator, instructional coach, and administrator Tony Kinnett posted on Twitter Thursday.

Kinnett explained that he is an administrator in the largest school district in Indiana which means he is present in "dozens of classrooms a week" so he "sees exactly what we are teaching our students."

"We don’t have the quotes and theories as state standards per se," Kinnett said. "We do have Critical Race Theory in how we teach."

Kinnett continued, "We tell our teachers to treat our students differently based on color. We tell our students every problem is a result of ‘white men’ and that everything Western Civilization built is racist. Capitalism is a tool of white supremacy. Those are straight out of Kimberle Crenshaw’s main points verbatim in ‘Critical Race Theory: The Key Writings that Formed the Movement.’"

I appreciate his desire for transparency and sharing his experiences. I hope he follows up with specific examples, including lessons and assignments. It may also help if he gave parents directions on how to look rather than just generalizing.

This is in math, history, science, English, the arts, and it’s not slowing down. If students of color have lower reading scores, it’s because of inequity. Therefore, we take from the “white students” and give to the “color” students. That’s Richard Delgado straight out of CRT an Introduction.
All teaching is political, with reality and facts taking a back seat. That’s Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, who outlined how she saw Critical Race Theory flushed out in public schools in 1995.​

In Support of Critical Race Theory in Public K-12 Education
Resolution Number: 68
WHEREAS
, Critical Race Theory ("CRT") is the practice of interrogating the role of race and racism in society, in which racism can be seen across systemic, institutional and interpersonal levels operating over the course of time and across generations; and

WHEREAS, historical racism and racist systems have caused de jure and de facto discrimination against people of color and have created racial inequities in all facets of life in the United States, and these racial inequities continue to the present day; and

WHEREAS, the basic tenets of CRT are as follows:
  1. Recognition that race is not biologically real, but it is socially constructed and socially significant as a product of social thought not connected to biological reality;
  2. Acknowledgement that racism is a normal feature of society and is embedded within systems and institutions, like the legal system, that replicate racial inequality, meaning that racist incidents are not aberrations but instead manifestations of structural and systemic racism;
  3. Rejection of popular understandings about racism, including claims of meritocracy, colorblindness, and arguments that confine racism to a few bad apples, in recognition that the systemic nature of racism, which is codified in law, embedded in structures, and woven into public policy, bears primary responsibility for reproducing racial inequality;
  4. Recognition of the relevance of people's everyday lives to scholarship, embracing the lived experiences of people of color, including those preserved through storytelling, and rejecting deficit-informed research that excludes the epistemologies of people of color; and
WHEREAS, CRT transcends a Black/white racial binary and recognizes that racism has impacted the experiences of various people of color, including Latinx, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and other racial groups; and

WHEREAS, this evolving, malleable practice critiques how the social construction of race and institutionalized racism perpetuate a racial caste system that relegates people of color to the bottom tiers and recognizes that race intersects with other identities, including sexuality and gender identity; and

WHEREAS, CRT recognizes that racism is not a bygone relic of the past, but instead acknowledges that the legacy of slavery, segregation, and the imposition of second-class citizenship on people of color continue to permeate the social fabric of this nation; and

WHEREAS, it can be used to theorize, examine, and challenge the ways which race and racism implicitly and explicitly impact social structures, practices, and discourses; and

WHEREAS, CRT notes that learning and scholarship that ignores race is not demonstrating "neutrality" but adherence to the existing racial hierarchy, challenging white privilege and exposing deficit-informed research that ignores, and often omits, the scholarship of people of color; and

WHEREAS, Black, Indigenous, & People of Color (BIPOC) have experienced a gap in achievement compared to their White counterparts, and these students need an equitable allocation of resources to fill in the gaps; and

WHEREAS, the examination of racial inequities and education gaps between white students and students of color must consider the following factors:
  1. the predominance of curriculum that excludes the history and lived experiences of Americans of color and imposes a dominant white narrative of history;
  2. deficit-oriented instruction that characterizes students of color as in need of remediation;
  3. narrow assessments, the results of which are used to confirm narratives about the ineducability of children of color;
  4. school discipline policies that disproportionately impact students of color and compromise their educational outcomes (such as dress code policies prohibiting natural Black hairstyles);
  5. school funding inequities, including the persistent underfunding of property-poor districts, many of which are composed primarily of children of color; and
  6. the persistence of racially segregated education.
WHEREAS, mayors understand that policies focused on equity can reduce gaps within public institutions, including public-school systems; and

WHEREAS, policymakers and educators have the opportunity to identify solutions and implement evidence-based programs that advance academic achievement and provide culturally-aware resources for students of color for post-secondary and career readiness,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the nation's mayors support the implementation of CRT in the public education curriculum to help engage our youth in programming that reflects an accurate, complete account of BIPOC history; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that The United States Conference of Mayors supports access to equitable programs that reflect history, decrease achievement gaps, and better ensure that BIPOC students receive resources to ensure their success upon the completion of their primary education.

IDK what you mean by this, but institutional racism means that there are laws that disproportionately hurt certain races, and I can say with 100% certainty that the draconian attack on personal liberty known as the war on drugs disproportionately hurts minorities. Some of the people who pushed for the war on drugs did it with racist intent, and they have all fallen by the wayside, and few/nobody is racist now, but the result is the same.

Just no; you can't make such an assertion as statement of fact without looking at offender rates and criminal history. For instance:

Based on data compiled by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, it found that while Black people make up 13% of the U.S. population, they were 33% of persons arrested for non-fatal violent crime (NVC), which includes rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and other assaults. Black people were 36% of those arrested for serious non-fatal violent crimes (SNVC), including rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

Similarly, Hispanics make up 18% of the US population and were 21% of those arrested for serious non-fatal violent crimes. Whites, who are 60% of the population, were 46% of persons arrested for non-fatal violent crimes, and 39% of those arrested for serious non-fatal violent crimes.

The designation “Black” and “white” often did not include those who are Hispanic. In 9% of single-offender incidents and 12% of multiple-offender incidents, the victim was unable to tell whether the offender was Hispanic.

The study compared the UCR statistics with those from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). Whereas the UCR relies on reports of criminal arrests submitted by law enforcement officials to the FBI, the 2018 NCVS was based on interviews from 151,055 U.S. households. Thus, the NCVS identifies crimes that are not reported to law enforcement. In the 2018 NCVS, Blacks accounted for 29% of violent crime perpetrators in 35% of the violent crimes reported to police. By comparison., the UCR statistics showed Blacks were 33% of all people arrested for violent crimes.

In the NCVS, whites accounted for 52% of violent crime perpetrators and 48% in those reported to police. The UCR showed whites accounting for 46% of the people arrested for NVC.

Hispanics made up 14% of violent crime perpetrators in the NCVS and 13% of the violent crimes reported to police, but made up 18% of the people arrested for NVC according to UCR statistics.

The report concluded that for whites and Blacks, “there were no statistically significant differences by race between offenders identified in the NCVS and persons arrested per the UCR. White and Black people were arrested proportionate to their involvement in SNVC overall and proportionate to their involvement in SNVC reported to the police.”

At 21%, Hispanics were overrepresented among the persons arrested for serious non-fatal violent crimes compared to 12% of those reported to police. “However, some of this difference may be due to victims not knowing the ethnicity of the assailants, even if they knew their race.”

Victims were able to identify the race or ethnicity of their assailants in 86% of violent crimes.

The average number of assailants was 1.29 and did not vary significantly by the victims’ race or ethnicity. Crimes involving multiple assailants, 43% of the assailants were Black, 38% were white, and 16% were Hispanic. For single-assailant crimes, 22% of the assailants were Black, 59% were white, and 14% were Hispanic.

Other racial groups were tracked, but lacked sufficient numbers for reliable statistics except Asians, who were consistently underrepresented among violent offenders with the exception of rape and sexual assault. For those crimes, Asians were 5% of assailants, about the same as their 5.7 percent representation in the U.S. population.

I haven't run the numbers from the 2020 FBI UCR report, but I did it for years until about three years ago, and these numbers comport with those reports historically.
Black people commit a shite-ton of violent and other crime that spectacularly outstrips their per capita population.
Over 50% of murder offenders are black and is a decades long stat; that's literally 13% of the population committing more murder than the other 87%! Are police not arresting white murderers so they have more prison space for black murderers? Unless you're proposing that police willfully, knowingly don't arrest white and Hisp/Latinos in order to target black people and boost their incarceration numbers, I'm not sure what point you have.

I don't understand your logic about this. Letting people shoot up drugs doesn't seem to be making a positive contribution in the liberal states of the west coast. Nobody cares about marijuana, but heroin, crack etc. seem to really be a bad thing to allow.
Good point I haven't really considered. The prohibition argument has long been lauded as the real issue and legalization as a cure. While it isn't legalized decriminalization is a step in that direction and we should expect to see some results from that alone. We aren't, things have actually gone much worse.

I bet there are some really good studies out there to parse the info.

A professor at Arizona State University is arguing that the traditional grading system is 'racist' and is calling for an end to 'white language' by encouraging teachers to grade students based on the labor they put into their work instead of factors like spelling, grammar or quality.

Asao Inoue, a professor of rhetoric and composition, has given a series of lectures on the topic and most recently delivered one during a virtual event Friday, during which he argued that labor-based grading 'redistributes power in ways that allow for more diverse habits of language to circulate,' the College Fix first reported.

During his lecture, titled The Possibilities of Antiracist Writing Assessment Ecologies, Inoue said: 'White language supremacy in writing classrooms is due to the uneven and diverse linguistic legacies that everyone inherits, and the racialized white discourses that are used as standards, which give privilege to those students who embody those habits of white language already.'

As long as there have been teachers, there has been the hope that there would one day be an election in which American voters ranked "education" as their top priority. Last Tuesday night in the Virginia governor's race, we educators finally got what we had long been hoping for. Theories abound about why education rose meteorically in importance—parental backlash to CRT, or parents' deep frustration with school districts keeping their children at home for over a year, or parents listening to school lessons on Zoom that many found objectionable or wholly unnecessary. There were also the heavy handed mask mandates and new vaccine requirements for young children.

But add up these grievances and frustrations with American education and it reveals a far graver concern: American parents have a general but palpable sense they have lost the ability to shape and mold the lives of their own children. And they are angry about it.

Everywhere they look, parents find themselves fighting an uphill battle against a culture making it harder to raise normal, decent, well-adjusted human beings. Washington is awash in cynicism and increasingly populated by provocateurs instead of high-minded legislators. Hollywood monetizes violence, vulgarity, and the cult of celebrity. Silicon Valley supplies meaningless endorphins by the trillions as students spend thousands of hours a year consuming unfiltered content on their devices, all while becoming more miserable, socially isolated, and in some cases, even developing mysterious ticks.

The American Medical Association recently released a guide on "Advancing Health Equity" that promotes how to fight for critical race theory, includes a list of words not to say and their "equity-focused alternatives," and criticizes concepts like "meritocracy," "individualism" and the "'free' market."

The 55-page document released on Oct. 28 cites a guide by the organization Race Forward for how to advocate for critical race theory (CRT), which is called "Guide to Counter-Narrating the Attacks on Critical Race Theory."

The right has always so desperately needed a boogie man. I wish they would find a motivator other than manufactured fear.
