Cuonzo releases Landry

He had been a failure and and an embarrassment to the program.

Again, I'm not a big Martin apologist, but I definitely wouldn't say he's ever embarrassed the program. I mostly like his attitude, I just wish it yielded more results.

I'm not that high on Martin either, but I disagree that over signing as bad PR can kill a program.

Sure it doesn't kill a program when you are a proven coach(crean) but when you are unproven and extremely shaky as a recruiter it certainly can. That's why comparing crean and martin is comical.

A sleazy practice is still sleazy no matter who's doing it, winning or not.

He was, but Pearl told him there would be a scholarship for him the next year if he stayed. He couldn't be on scholarship for the season he was ineligible, so he paid his own way for a year.

Numbers were getting tight in spring, so West's dad talked to Pearl in February and again in April (IIRC) about whether he was sure there would be a spot for West. Pearl said he was. Then, in summer, Pearl tells him there's no scholarship and he has to leave.

Also, IIRC, West didn't have the money to pay his way through a year at UT so his community came together to help raise it for him. Obviously didn't mean much in the end though.

Do u have a link I can read

We will see how bad this effects recruiting, my guess is it will have very little-to no impact at all.

I don't think it will either unless it affects the school Landry came from

Which I see not being much of an impact. For arguments sake lets say their coach hates CCM now and you can basically forget him getting any player from there, what impact does that have? It's one school, in martins previous 6 recruiting classes how many kids from there have we pulled? We don't target kids from HP or Oak Hill for the most part so I really see this having zero impact.

Out of curiosity volbeast, do you remember Matthew Dotson?

Also, what were your thoughts on how Pearl did T.Smith? Forcing him to prep school and not releasing him from his LOI?

There were a few interviews with his dad up at the time, but I'm not sure if you can find anything substantial now. I'm sure there's a Daniel West Sr. interview in Basilio's archives somewhere, but I'm not sure what day it happened.

This is what I said at the time...

[West] had to get his entire community together to raise the money to pay his own way, and after making decent grades in his semester here--with Pearl telling him and his father multiple times that everything would be fine and there would be a scholarship waiting for him--suddenly, his scholarship is gone with basically no explanation and he is essentially forced to leave.

...so my memory is actually pretty good.

What're your thoughts on saban doing this? Or if/when butch does it this spring?

BTO, I think it was prudent thing to do from a roster standpoint. However, Saban hasn't done this (to my knowlege) and I don't think Jones will either. There's a difference (in my mind, anway) between giving a guy a year to prove himself, then cutting him - or taking an early commitment, then walking away from it before signing day - and what happened here - take a commitment 18 months early, sign the kid, then recruit over him during his senior year. Based on EYBL last year, Cuonzo had a very good idea Landry wasn't improving and didn't stack up very well against other high D1 kids. He had every chance to walk away - no harm, no foul - before November. That's a lot less questionable path, at least in my mind.

Once again not the same thing......he didn't commit to pearl

Lmao ok. You'll find a loophole in anything I'm convinced. Here's the thing though, Pearl STRUNG him along for a long time, Dotson was packing his bags getting ready to head to UT when Pearl told him...what a classy move. This of course was AFTER Pearl said he would honor all scholarships awarded by Peterson.

If it were another school that accepted a players commitment in 2011, then in 2013 releases that player you would probably have a different opinion.
Personally I think that is a terrible way to treat the kid. It could limit where this kid has a place to play. If Martin was not sure if he wanted this payer or not he should not have take his commitment. The kid thought he had a college hone for over a year. That is not right and show lack of judgment on CCM.

Pearl more or less did, though. He gave Damien Harris the same speech as he gave Dotson. Dotson thought better of coming after being told he'd not play. Harris came ahead, didn't play, and left after a year.

As for Tyler Smith, I did disagree with how Pearl handled that. If a kid wants out after a coaching change, the school should not stand in the way of him walking on the scholarship - period.

I can't find anything about it and don't believe anything Basilio says but if it really happened that way.....It was very unethical and just as bad as what Zo did

I don't agree with not letting him out but that's not the same level of what Zo did

That's not how the Dotson situation went down. Pearl told everyone that he would honor Peterson's scholarships, this included Dotson. Dotson had heard very little from Pearl, in late may Dotson came to visit Tennessee to make preparations for summer school. While here he registered for classes and played basketball with the guys........he returns home, and ONE day before classes are set to begin Pearl calls him.

That's 100x worse than what Martin did to Landry, I don't care what anyone says.

It's a lot worse. This wasn't a signee, this was a kid who paid his way for a year, based on a lie Pearl told his family several times.
