You know what's funny? Sometimes when you read past the headline, it turns out that the body of the piece is where the actual point gets made.
The Rolling Stone piece says nothing about Bama's defense being the best of all-time. The entire story makes the case that a 15-0 Bama team that beat the 2016 schedule by the point margins that they did would be in the discussion for greatest team of all-time.
The ESPN piece says little beyond "Bama's defense might be among the greatest in history." But it's dedicated to discussing the upcoming CFPNCG, and doesn't actually make any comparisons to any past squads.
Try reading, doofus.
So lemme get this straight. My point was the media in 2016 was all up on Alabama's jock hyping them up as the best defense ever. I cite a link saying they're the best TEAM ever and you say that doesn't count because they didn't specifically single out the defense as the best ever but instead cited the entire team. LOL. You really are something else.
I think you are the one that needs to read beyond just the headline.
There is a significant difference between the two. I know that you have been on a personal journey of college football enlightenment that has brought you gems of insight like "coaching is important," so allow me to contribute: it is possible for a team to have produced the greatest season of all-time and not have either the greatest offense or defense in history.
Says the guy who didn't bother until he was called out for failing to do so.
I know that. I think you are missing my overall point. I could care less whether Alabama's defense is in fact the best ever last year. My overall point was just about the media hype. And the fact I found an article arguing that the entire Alabama team last year might be the best ever as an entire collective rather than just one unit proves my point even more.
The key here is the media's over the top effusive praise of what turned out to be a not so great Alabama team.
I could care less about whether or not they were talking about just the defense or the entire team.
My overall point still remains.
That I picked Clemson in a matchup against an Alabama team that the media was head over heels for.
I thought I remembered this little gem.
Builds strawman claiming media hyped 2016 Bama as the greatest defense of all-time ->
Links article that says nothing about Bama's defense being the greatest defense of all-time ->
Claims point is even further made.
2016 Tennessee goes 8-4. D4H's Assessment: might be the greatest team of all-time.
2016 Alabama goes 14-1, and loses at the last second in the national title game. D4H's Assessment: not that great.
You also don't care about making a rational, cogent point.
You just got finished saying that you don't care if your point was actually supported, but somehow it remains nonetheless.
Again, you want credit for calling "heads."
The same point holds true for Jeremy Pruitt. He'll have a 4-8 team playing at an 8-4 level next year at the very least.
And watch how Tennessee players from the 2016 Vols dominate the NFL in coming years.
I'm certain there will be more pro-bowl players from the 2016 Tennessee Vols than the 2016 Alabama Crimson Tide team.
Once again remember how this argument started. I said picking Clemson over Alabama in the 2017 national championship game was a bold move given how much of a juggernaut the media made Alabama out to be. I cited the fact many in the media were calling them the best defense ever. You asked for proof. I gave you proof. And then you responded that an article saying they might be the best college football team ever wasn't proof because it didn't specifically talk about the defense being the best ever.
Lets step back right now and look at the forest instead of the trees. This all started because I said picking Clemson over Alabama was a bold move. Forget about the best defense ever talk. The fact there were some in the media arguing the 2016 Alabama team might be the best ever proves my initial point even more that picking Clemson that year was a very bold move. It was not a simple 50/50 coin flip type pick. It was picking a decided underdog over an all-time juggernaut (at least according to the media narrative in 2016 before the game).
The same point holds true for Jeremy Pruitt. He'll have a 4-8 team playing at an 8-4 level next year at the very least.

It was also pretty obvious that Bama defense was gonna lit da fuq up AGAIN lol best ever my ass theyve said this **** about multiple Saban defenses and theyll do it again they love to blow little nicky

And FTR, the second link pretty much proves my point in the first paragraph. Here is what Ed Ashcoff says:
"During the last couple of months, we've heard about how good, how special and how historic Alabama's defense has been this season. And the numbers don't lie. It's hard not to place this defense among the greatest in both Alabama history and college football history -- period."
The writer here is obviously alluding to what I was talking about. That the 2016 Alabama defense was getting all sorts of hype about being the best ever and he's writing this article in response to that hype.
I think you are the one that needs to read beyond just the headline.
You were certain about Butch Jones doing the same thing in 2016 and '17, so your certainty is worth less than nothing.
I have never seen someone jerk off so hard over picking one game. And it's not like it was a massive upset. The betting line was within 1 score.
Picking Tennessee to win the National Championship was bold. Predicting that UT would have a Top 2 defense in the SEC was bold. Sticking by both predictions after Georgia Tech and Florida was bold.
No I didnt. I always said he was a liability. I believed in the players and thought they could overcome his incompetence. Obviously I was wrong which is why I know have more appreciation for coaching in college football.
Jeremy Pruitt reminds me of Nick Saban. I think he'll be a great head coach. Something I never said about Butch Jones. I only thought the talent of the Tennessee players was elite. I also had faith in guys like Bob Shoop. We'll find out soon if he was held back by Butch Jones or a fraud himself from the start.
How about picking Georgia to win the national title in October 1st? When everyone was on the Clemson and Bama train. If I get this right I would say it was very bold. And I stuck with them even after the blowout loss against Auburn when many on here were laughing at my prediction.
I'm pretty confident I'll get the last laugh here.

Everyone hopes this happens, but saying that the 2016 UT team would destroy the 2016 Clemson team with better coaching is just dumb AF and there is absolutely no way you can support it being anything but your unqualified opinion. Just stop
I was telling you how important coaching is in college football and sports in general.
Coaching isnt very important in the NBA (the sport I followed the most closely before getting deep into college football the last 3 years). If you have the best players in the NBA you almost always win. I thought the same applied in college football. And boy was I wrong.
Coaching is far more important in football than basketball.
