D4H's 2017 NBA Draft Preview

I have more trust in a North Korean prison than your draft analytics.

You still feel this way?

One year in and my takes on Jayson Tatum and Markelle Fultz look genius. Tatum is already looking like a superstar while Fultz will be lucky to reach my comps for him as CJ McCollum and Eric Gordon.

One game. One summer league game. When he has a bad game will you retract?

Unlike you guys, I know talent and can spot it in one game.

I already had Jayson Tatum rated as a superstar before the draft. But after that first summer league game, it only confirmed what I already knew.

And now in the playoffs he's showing the world what I saw clear as day from that first summer league game.

Jayson Tatum is a SUPERSTAR.

This is my pick for the finals this year. These are the 2 best teams in basketball right now. They are #1 and #2 in point differential and defensive effeciency through 8 games. Typically a sign of a championship caliber team.

I think the Thunder win tonight and ultimately the 2017-18 NBA Championship over the Celtics.

Kyrie will win the regular season MVP which will be a decent consolation prize for him.

I hope y'all realize, I'm not just good at the NFL Draft.

My #1 rated player from the 2017 NBA Draft, Jayson Tatum, is about to lead his team to the NBA Finals. While the guy everyone had going #1 last year, Markelle Fultz, can't get a minute in the playoffs.

I was right about Jayson Tatum being a SUPERSTAR and I was right about Markelle Fultz being a bust.

So this means you were also wrong about Ball being a superstar.

You know who else has incredible swagger? A number of dip****s i've played pickup ball with.

Tatum shows promise but you are overreacting. I would bet lots of money that the first summer league game is not a statistically significant indicator of future nba success...same probably goes for all summer league games combined.

When will you guys stop doubting my eye test?

Who cares about statistical correlation. I trust my eyes. And I could tell from that first summer league game that Jayson Tatum was special. And now he's proving it to the world just how special he is as he leads his team to the conference finals as a rookie.

I was right about Alvin Kamara being the best rookie RB in the 2017 NFL Draft when no one else thought so. I've also been right about Jayson Tatum being the best player from the 2017 NBA Draft when no one else thought so.

You guys need to stop doubting my draft projections. I'm the best in this world at doing this. And when Josh Dobbs also proves me right in the NFL you guys will realize just how gifted I am.

So this means you were also wrong about Ball being a superstar.

Nope. Lonzo Ball showed superstar traits. He was one of 4 players all season to average at least 10 PPG, 7 RPG, and 7 APG on the season. The other 3 guys were LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Ben Simmons.

Lonzo just needs to work on his shot and that will come in due time like it did for Jason Kidd. Lonzo is well on his way to becoming the next Jason Kidd.

If he works on his defense he will be a great player.

Whew, this is rough even by D4H standards.

Lists 18 players he likes, looks like only 1 of them will make 1st team All-Rookie.

At least his #1 player will more than likely finish 3rd in the ROTY vote. He can hang his hat on that.

Ben Simmons was drafted in 2016 so he wasn't part of this class. I never saw tape on Donovan Mitchell and Kyle Kuzma so you can't count those as misses. They were just guys I was unaware of.

Lauri Markannen looks like he could make 1st team rookie along with Jayson Tatum so you are wrong about me only getting 1 guy onto the 1st team. There's a good chance of two.

And at the end of the day, it ain't about who makes all-rookie teams. Its about long-term success. And of the guys I evaluated, I'm 100% right. Jayson Tatum will be the best from this class. Lonzo Ball will be also be a star. Donovan Mitchell and Kyle Kuzma were surprises that no one saw coming. And Markelle Fultz is the bust I said he would be.

Or it won’t. Kidd didn’t develop a jumpshot until his 30’s.
And having Fultz at #6 isn’t exactly calling your shot. I might be mistaken but he’s the youngest player ever to record a triple double so he’s been good when he’s been on the floor

Tatum will be a superstar but that’s the only player you got right. Missing on Mitchell removes your credibility

You literally said Fultz would be a bust but at the same time predicted his comp. to be CJ McCollum who has comparable numbers to the last #1 guard pick in Kyrie Irving. How much more contradictory can you get?

Just so he has his bases covered. He’s a total fraud.

Yep. Its insane. Just like with Kamara. Wheres Donovan Mitchell on your list btw? Might be ROY and not even in your crappy list.

I never watched any tape on Donovan Mitchell before the draft. I got my first look at him when he was drafted.

It was a mistake on my part. Unlike the NFL Draft which produces steals almost every year, the best players in the NBA are almost always the guys drafted in the top 5-10 picks. Donovan Mitchell and Kyle Kuzma were anomalies last year.

I'll see if I need to dig deeper in my scouting of NBA prospects this year.

What's funny about that?

If I don't scout a player at all how I can be wrong about him?

Unlike the NFL Draft where I try to look for late round steals that develop into stars, I don't do that for the NBA because it almost never happens.

Even Steph Curry who is considered a long shot by NBA standards, was drafted 7th overall in 2009. What Kyle Kuzma and Donovan Mitchell did this year was largely unprecedented.

With that said, Jayson Tatum will still be the best player from this draft class. He is nearly 2 years younger than Ben Simmons and Donovan Mitchell while nearly 3 years younger than Kyle Kuzma.

Jayson Tatum has the highest ceiling of any of the 2017 rookies.

Never scouted Donovan Mitchell. He was a player that was not projected to get drafted high so I didn't watch his film.

Unlike the NFL Draft where every year there are major steals, in the NBA draft, unless you go in the top 5-10 picks, it's unlikely you become a star.

I never even heard of Donovan Mitchell until the draft. If I watched his film beforehand, I'm sure I would have nailed him as well. He would have been my #3 rated player after Tatum and Lonzo.

You guys simply don't get how comparisons work. Its based on similarity of playing style. Not similarity of production. I compare Josh Dobbs to Randall Cunningham and Saquon Barkley to Fred Taylor not because that is the level of player I expect them to be. Rather it's the player whose playing style they most resemble. I'm on the record saying Dobbs will be the best QB in NFL history and Saquon the best RB I've ever seen. You guys need to stop being so simple and thinking a player comp means that I think they will put up similar numbers.

Also, when I say Fultz will be a bust, I mean in relation to Tatum or Ball, the guys who were drafted after him. If both develop into SUPERSTARS while Fultz is just an above average starter, then he will be a bust. He doesn't have to be out of the league in 3 years like Anthony Bennett to be considered a bust.

And finally, unlike you I don't consider CJ McCollum to be that good of a player. He's simply an above average basketball player. You might think stats tell what a player is. I don't. I watch the games and CJ McCollum isn't in the same universe as Kyrie Irving.

Markelle Fultz is a lot closer to what I said he would be than the morons that said he was the clear cut #1 pick before the draft last year.

BS. I just checked the first 5 mock drafts in google and they all had him top 15, and 3 had him at 12 or better. How is it that you are such an expert and didn't know about him?
