Da Reds thread

Baseball salaries are high, grandpa. Hell BJ Upton is making 15 million a year. Career .310/.417/.534 lines aren't cheap, gramps.

well kiddo we are not Atlanta. we spent 20 million more than you did this year. so far though the braves have about the same record as the reds. a lot of good all that spent money is doing us. a bad signing like homer bailey will keep us down for some years. we need to build through draft and trades. look for chapman, cueto, and bruce if anybody will take him to be moved shortly. votto's contract makes him untradeable so we are stuck with him.

I doubt you're "stuck" with votto

we are stuck with votto till he is 40. not a GM in the majors will take on that contract. if he hit for 40 hr's and 100 rbi's and wasn't injury prone maybe we could move him. that is not the case though. he is untradeable unless we eat a lot of his contract which isn't going to happen.

Call me crazy but I would just enjoy the 163 RC+ now and worry about the contract later

can't do that with a small market team. jocketty rolled the dice 1 more year overpaying players and adding byrd hoping to get to the playoffs. we have some good young players on the team now, but we are 4th in a division that we can't win. it is time to trade as many of these bad contracts as we can and grab some good prospects. we can't sign cueto or chappy, need to move them. bruce, phillips and votto will be on the block, but I doubt any team will pick up the huge contracts. regardless the reds won't sniff the playoffs for at least 4 or 5 years. we might as well be Cleveland, hell they have a better chance than we do.

Cozart out for 9 months. Torn ligaments and a tendon in his knee.

It was such a freak deal. ACL, LCL, tendon. They are saying 9 months and I only want to laugh. Hate it for Zack, he was having his best season. Had gone to work in the offseason on his hitting and it showed. Will get to see how good Suarez is now.

But what's their WAR? That's all that matters. lol.

Bud, IMO the youth rebuild has started. I think Mark Sheldon is expecting a different roster by the time he gets back from vacation in a couple of weeks based on his blog posts today. I could see them dumping Bruce, Byrd and if a serious major market team came after BP, he could go. Throw in a few marginal pen guys, Negron, etc. Votto is too expensive as you state. They can't eat any of his salary until next season with the new Fox contract. They probably hope he can post a good season to make that a semi-viable option.

Bailey, Mes, now Cozart - not one of them has a bright future any more. All three have major, potentially career altering injuries. Dead salary for a couple of seasons most likely. Add in Cueto, Leake on the block now and even Chappy after next season. It is not pretty if they don't pull off some quality deals even with some good talent called up now.

BTW - is Junior still on track? Want to see him running through the T one day.

He had a great Specialist Camp last week at Neyland.

Will be at MTSU tonight.

Saturday Night Lights camp next week.

Very busy. He has improved greatly but has a long way to go to be "Tennessee good". Good thing is, he works at it everyday.

Praying it all works out for the best for him and your family. As you know the work ethic is more than half the battle. He's on the radar with the staff. That's all you can ask.

I hate hate HATE batting Hamilton 9th.

He is a lead off hitter who needs to bunt twice a game minimum

Exactly. He will beat out 33-50% of them and get better at it. Draws the infield in. Then when he hits away he will get more hits. I am in a running dialog on that issue on a Reds blog. Price uses the excuse that Billy needs to bat 9th to take the pressure off him while he learns his craft. So what has been the result over the last month of the LaRussa Way? The exact same BA and OBP. Same. He hits around .270 in his natural RH ABs. He's at .200 batting LH - which he just started doing 4 years ago. His issue with BA/OBP is that he is not a good SH'er yet.

They are reducing their team run output by giving Billy less AB's. Compare his runs to total bases - it's out the roof compared to the others, 29/62, because he steals second and third so often. He may only get on 1 in 4 AB's. If he gets on he scores nearly half the time! Wouldn't you want him to get more AB's if you are run challenged? Good Lawd how dumb.
