Da Reds thread

Reds have now allowed 241 home runs this season, tying the 1996 Tigers for the most HR allowed in a single season in MLB history.

Dicky said yesterday they will not be doing a lot in the offseason. Feels they have the core position players they want along with SP's. Are looking at utility guys. Will spend money potentially on the pen (ya think!). The only two they plan to market are BP if he agrees and Cozart. The later will probably not bring much after being shut down the last month with tendonitis in the surgical knee. He is trying to clear a path for Peraza at SS and Herrera at 2B depending on BP's and Cozy's status. Jays may take a run at Votto again, but that possibility is probably limited to the Reds not covering much of his contract with the great second half he had at the plate along with receiving serious MLB ready prospects. Will see, doesn't look like Dicky expects anything to happen.

Looks like a 4th place in the Central with 75 wins type season coming up. So much to look forward to in the off season. Yawn.

News from the team blogs/analysts for those that care:

Trying to deal Cozart and BP. That opens the door for Peraza at SS and Herrera at 2B if it happens. Votto states he will not waive the no-trade provision ever - he wants to stay in Cincy for his career. So the preliminary talks with the Jays have been shut down. He has turned the corner as a mature man and improved leader it appears. The second half was encouraging despite his poor D as he found a solid way to overcome his leg issues at the plate. He continues working with a few of the guys on their hitting in the off season and is staying in Cincy now, as is Billy. Billy is ready to go, recovered from the oblique injury. He was .293/.369 in the second half before it. Votto continues to help him and Billy is very confident he will be taking the next step as a hitter.

Winker will be on the active 25 this year and in the rotation in the OF unless they deal Billy for a boatload of pitching, in which case he could start with Schebler moving to CF. This is the position group that has the most upside on O. At this point it appears that if they deal Billy it would be around the trade deadline or the next season for everybody to see how he performs. Would be an idiotic move IMO. Even Votto says as Billy goes so go the Reds, which is why he works so much with him. With Billy and Peraza at the top of the order good things can happen for this team as they will have Votto, Duvall, Schebler and Suarez driving them in.

Winter meeting negotiations will be focused on one SP and the pathetic pen. Iggy and Lorenzen will anchor the pen and have great upsides. In between them and the SP's is a total crapshoot. Lots of needs. They also need a dependable back-up C to replace the released Cabrera. Everybody is happy with Barnhart. Nobody has a clue when/if Meso will be able to catch, which has become an annual question mark.

Nick Senzel is rated the #1 prospect now. Suarez may become expendable in a couple of years as they fast track Nick if he continues to respond as he has. Suarez has an under-valued bat which will continue to improve, but does not appear to have the same upside on D at all.

Early predictions are as much as a .500 season or slightly below, The approximate average is adding 10 to the upper 70's. All of it depends on what they get for pitching. Peraza brings more speed than Cozart with equal D and can be BP level productive at the plate. Herrerra is a total unproven unknown. So moving BP and Cozy appears neutral at best on D and on O. It should shore up pitching though, which is how they are going to get better, sooner. The team's Runs Scored when up 10% or so last season, which partially covered for the pen's incompetency and increased their win total by a handful.

We will soon learn if Dicky knows how to be a GM better than Walter.

Per my above post: we learned that Dicky does not know how to be a GM better than Walter. In fact, he seemed a bit puzzled by it all in post meeting interviews. Shocked face.

The club now has 4 interior infielders - 2 aging, beat up vets in their last year as well as 2 young, low cost quality starters for many clubs in MLB - all of which will be sharing playing time. That is the club's status as they head to ST. While they lack a minimum of 3 quality relievers in the pen to be able to inch their way out of the cellar.

Brilliant.

Strailey moved for prospects There went 191 IP, 14 wins, 3.76 ERA.

Salary dump of BP to Atlanta for pitching prospects. The problem was Dicky had to eat most of BP's $14 MM to get it done. Now Peraza is clear to play every day. Cozy probably history by the trade deadline.

Gomer out again until probably June with bone chip surgery. Rakes in another $19 MM. FO plus Homer = losing.

Former Vol Nick Senzel will be at 3B by 2018 at the latest. Top Reds prospect per MLB rankings. Possibility he gets a call up later in this season depending on his work in AA/AAA. The org wants to push him along quicker than they usually do.

Vegas has the U/O at 73.5 wins. With that pitching staff I will take the under. Surprise me, please.

Finnegan looked like an ace last night! Dominating performance and the pen didn't blow it late unlike last season. Votto gets first HR of season and Reds put up a W. Good night!

Really like Finnegan, not so much for the rest of the pitching group. Lorenzen just hit a solo homer for the Reds to take a 5-4 lead.

Votto looks good at the plate. Back to choking up less on the bat for the first two strikes like he did before last season. Looks healthy, may even be a bit better on D. Don't know what's up with the pitching staff doing so well to start the season. Last thing most of us ever expected. Still not expecting much.

Garrett looked extremely crisp in his major debut.
