Da Reds thread

Whelp they named Cincinnati native David Bell as our next manager. He has been in the Reds system before being the manager for our old AA club for three seasons and the manager over at Louisville for a season. I was really hoping for a proven guy like Girardi or John Farrell honestly. Honestly this is lackluster for me, what message does this send to the fanbase from the ownership? Bell may turn into a great manager but this is not awe inspiring for me.

It doesn’t seem to me like Farrell or Girardi wanted to take part in a rebuild. I like the Reds talent but probably a couple years away from true contention

I like Bell. Cincy will get behind this hire. He's family and is moving his family back there. He's also been exposed to several other very successful franchises in recent times with the Cubs, Cards and Giants. He's added a good understanding of analytics to his arsenal in recent years and will participate more in player acquisitions. Looks like he will blend the traditional and analytics approaches. Add in his playing career and farm managing experience is such that no players will be able to pull one over on him. Cozart gave him a big endorsement. They've already made their first and most important coaching hire at pitching with Johnson. Taking him from the Brew Crew where he was highly successful developing - that's a strong hire. Especially when considering all the MLB pitchers he developed at Vandy.

Happiest I have been with ownership/management moves in a long, long time. The FO needed to adapt because they basically lost much of the fan base last season. They claim they are going to spend significant money (to them) to buy some starting pitching this off season and have already made some overall roster moves to clear the decks for Winker, Blandino and Mella to be back on the roster from season ending injuries. Dixon was released with Blandino coming back on the roster.

The Reds have hired Turner Ward away from the Dodgers as our hitting coach. Gotta say I'm kinda impressed to see us snag two coaches from playoff teams.

It's gettin' real in Cincy. Looks like Bob C has gotten baseball religion lately. Hiring the best they can hire. Get the rest of that staff put together, give them what they need to work with, and get out of the way. Then go focus on the right staffs on the farm and find players to sign that fit the profile.

Finally getting things right.

Good news - they signed Iggy to a 3 year deal for $24.1 MM. Avoids arbitration and locks him in through 2021. He's happy in Cincy personally and professionally.

Just saw that, good to see. At worst maybe we can dangle him again as trade bait.

Billy Hatcher is going to stay with the organization as a minor league outfield coordinator and base running coach.

Billy was probably ready for this. Still liking what I am seeing across the board. Benavides is a solid guy to add to the bench and has the respect of the roster. DeShields moving up should help with the table setters on the front end of the line-up plus add some fire. This looks like a potentially cohesive unit. Add in they plan to tender all the arbitration eligible guys except Casali, who they will probably sign to a multi-year deal to team up with Tucker.

I'm hoping they bring Casali back. He was pleasant surprise at the back-up catcher position.

Same here. He's always been a good pitch caller and on D, but he came into his own at the plate last season.

Speaking of Billys - Hamilton was non-tendered and is a FA today. Unexpected, but probably understandable. No teams would trade with them to take him. He was just such a liability at the plate despite his great D. Should open the door for our former Vol Senzel. I'm just wondering if they try to sign AJ Pollock for CF now since he's a FA. Will know soon enough.

Yeah I hate to see Billy go but I just couldn't stand watching him try and bat. It'll be interesting to see which team brings him in due to his defense and speed.

Agree - somebody will. For his sake I hope it is somebody that can get in his head and makes some positive changes in his hitting. Billy's a good guy with too much talent on D and base running to be wasted.

Saw where Winker is pumped about his rehab so far. Sounds very promising. The part about him playing RF makes me wonder a bit. Has the shoulder surgery helped his throwing arm, which has been really weak? I guess if he turns out to be too big of liability they can flip Scheb back to it. Typically you have a strong arm there. But his hitting is so good I look forward to him being back in the line-up.

Scooter on the trade block. Too many good 2B FA's to generate much interest in a decent trade IMO. They need to clear a spot somewhere for Senzel.

So hearing rumors that we're in talks with the Dodgers for Puig and Wood for Bailey, Barnhart, and Gutteriez. We're jumping into the Realmuto trade talks too surprisingly.

As I was typing that the Reds traded for Tanner Roark and gave up Rainey. Roark isn't flashy by any means but has started 93 starts the last three years, 571.2 IP, and for his career 64-54 w/3.59 ERA. Completely solid end of the rotation, inning eater type guy.

Exactly what they needed IMO. I see this as 2+ years on the rebuild to be a true playoffs level club. If they can get the top of the rotation guy and a CF, they may be able to push that up. If not they can continue to develop the young guns and will know what they have by the end of the season.

Article up on Red's site that Romano has gotten into better conditioning in the offseason and has dropped 15 lbs. Plans to be prepared to start or relieve - whatever the org wants. He was better at relieving IMO. With the shorter starts planned, he might make a really good long reliever/spot starter. Will see how it goes, but probably depends on whether the org signs a top of the order SP this off season.

Reds just made a blockbuster trade (for us) with the Dodgers to acquire Puig, Kemp, Wood, and minor league catcher Kyle Farmer in return for Homer Bailey, Josiah Gray, and Jeter Downs. Honestly I'm loving the trade. Sure these guys are all on the last year of their deals but it adds some excitement to next year's club and hopefully put butts in seats. Doing this and maybe making a deal with Cleveland might put us in fringe contender for the playoffs at worst we suck again and deal these guys at the deadline for prospects so we really can't lose.
