Da Reds thread

Nick has his 1st home run as a pro, really should have been his 2nd if not for a great defensive play by San Fran.

I guess after last nights' debacle the team found baseball Jesus, we're calling up Josh Van Meter now too.

They are doing what we have been wanting them to do. Great baseball minds and all...

I am now officially all in for this season. Making strong moves in the off season and now making strong moves to get better in season tells me they are trying to win again.
I agree that Bell loves the analytics a little too much, I know they have there place in modern baseball but sometimes you gotta see how the game is playing out with your eyes too.

As far as the roster make up if things don't start improving I'd really shake the roster up if I were in charge. There are a lot of guys down in Louisville that are doing things that deserve a shot in the big leagues:

Christian Colon - 32/105, 17 runs, 4 doubles, 1 HR, 17 RBIs, 17 BB, 10 SB (.305/.397/.371) (2nd in IL in stolen bases)
Josh VanMeter - 37/107, 26 runs, 5 doubles, 13 HR, 31 RBIs, 15 BB, 5 SB (.346/.432/.757) (Leads the International League in runs, home runs, RBIs, and 2nd in hits)
Phillip Ervin - 12/54, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 RBI, 5 BB, 3 SB (.222/.283/.296) (Kinda in a slump but we know Ervin can play)
Anthony Bass - 1.93 ERA, 14 IP, 5/7 SVs, 8 hits, 4 runs/3 earned, 1 HR, 12 SO/4BB and a .86 WHIP
Ian Krol - 3.27 ERA, 11 IP, 1 win/2 losses, 10 hits, 5 runs/4 earned, 1 HR, 10 SO/4 BB, 1.27 WHIP

Guys I'd option down

Option Scheb for Ervin
DFA Duke and recall Krol for that lefty replacement
Recall Bass and option Peralta
Option Peraza (at least for a time) and recall VanMeter (Jose has SS on lock down, VanMeter can platoon at 2B)
Option Farmer for Colon (We lose an emergency catcher but Colan can play 2B, 3B, and SS, and has a few MiLB games at LF)

You mentioned we need a middle/long reliever and I'd say Romano is a candidate but right now he has a really high ERA for the Bats but is a guy I could see in that role. All those moves would never happen but this team really needs a shake up in order to hopefully wake the offense up.

Great post by the way. Enjoy posting with another serious Reds fan. There's not been many of us lately.

I had the same thought on Romano. Hard to justify now but getting daily access to DJ may fix him quickly based on how all the others are responding. They may be waiting to see about Wood. If Wood can work into the rotation soon that frees Mahle for the role, unless they plan a trade at some point.

I'm all in with Ervin. He's talented - just needs to play.

I've seen enough of Wandy. Time to work in a young gun. Krol for Duke works for me

Really don't know what they are thinking with Farmer. How often do you need an emergency 3rd catcher for one game? Like never.

Votto is so done. He needs to STFU with the ump and try to hit a ball hard enough to break a pane of glass. His act is getting tired.

Exactly. We may gripe some and complain but you never see us dogging Freeman (potential HOF we'll see)

No doubt Votto isn't Votto this year and this might be the start of the decline but the whole team is struggling to swing the bat. Also having him in the 1 spot isn't smart managing either.

It is really pathetic, some fans don't appreciate generational talent.

What does appreciating generational talent have to do with my post above? He is an all time great. He is the 12th hardest person to get out in history. He also is hitting like steaming crap and he is arguing balls and strikes more than ever. He doesn't play a single game anymore without pouting and questioning the ump on strike calls. The umpires are not causing him to hit poorly and he has gotten to the point the last 2 years where he will take a pitch that he thinks is an inch off the plate and then piss and moan when it's called a strike. And since I singled him out let me also say Winker looked like a freaking idiot getting tossed the other night arguing strike 2 leading off the 9th. Smooth move

Fair, I’m sure not all.

Just seems like a decent portion of Reds fans don’t appreciate Votto

If that is the case, why do you think that is?

Z - we've had this discussion in the past. Part of the frustration is that your and some fans view of Votto's production heavily leans to the OBP and stats side of things. He's had a handful of best hitter, strong run production type seasons. He even got called out on it one off season by ownership/GM. Part of the distaste is the compensation versus the view of production when the org was unwilling or unable to spend enough dollars to go get the talent. When added to the other mistakes with the checkbook the result was bottom feeder status for the past 5 years and you could see it coming a mile away. Having JV was not enough, only winning is enough. The fans will not come to the games just to watch JV who is very good to great half of his seasons and just OK to good the rest. JV is not anywhere near a 5 tool player, so his run production had to carry the team, not be a liability as it has for half of his career because they could not pay the big bucks to bring in talented FA's.

Contrary to what you might think - I like the JV of the past 2+ years. Yes, his production has declined last and this year. However, he is now willing to do whatever is necessary to win and is working closely with the other players. That was not always the case and it has been well documented during those years. He has become a great teammate. His defense has been the best he's ever played the position this season. Batting LO with a slow runner like JV is always a bit dumb, but he has been very willing as asked. That is a change from past years. He always starts slow, he could end up hitting like the good JV, in which case hitting second like he willingly does most days now will be great. He has a lot to give still and the team needs him to be a senior leader.

But it you ask me if I would rather have Freeman, Goldy or Rizzo as my career first baseman - I would.

Watched that game live and the ump was horrible all game. That wasn't a strike on Winker before getting tossed and than he followed that up with another terrible call on Puig for the final out of the game. The MLB really has to start punishing these refs if they don't start getting serious about calling things fairly.

Also seeing how well Senzel has been doing why on earth did our front office not bring him up last year or at least to start this season? I know why (service time crap) but seriously he has been as good as advertised.

Exactly what I have been saying here and on Red's sites for over a year. He was actually ready last season, but the vertigo and broken finger derailed it. The arb clock argument is pure BS. The org is going to want to do a deal with him like they did with Suarez in a couple of years anyway. Instead they try to sell it like Schebler beat him out in ST. No, he didn't. Nick hit over .300 in ST and he is faster on the bases and better defensively already in CF. You do not send him down and take a chance on an injury - which happened. They lucked out and it was minor, but looked horrible at the time.

Nick is a just a talented baseball player. He does everything the right way. Those type guys show others how it is done and bust their tails. That's what this roster has needed for years. Now get Scooter healed and Ervin back up there. Ervin's a battler as well. That's three that will rub off on the others and light fires. You add them to Dietrich's in your face attitude as well as Winker's enthusiasm and you've got the core you need to win a lot of games.

No hits last night. None. Embarrassing. Mahle now has a 3.69 ERA with a 0-5 W/L record. Ridiculous. Our #5 SP with that kind of ERA and can't record a W.

This feast or famine hitting is BS. Some of the guys are making way too much money to hit like this. Talking to you Votto, Suarez, Puig and Barnhart. The lower paid guys have covered for you for far too long.

I didn't even listen to it because it started so late. The guy pitching for the As had an 6.81 ERA going into the game and averaged about 4 hits a game completely unacceptable to not get at least a hit off that game. Also if I were Mahle I'd say something in the locker room last night. He is averaged 1.62 run support in his starts and he has pitched well enough to win a couple of games so far. He and Gray are the only two Reds SPs that haven't recorded a win yet.

Something is wrong, although I still think the schedule has been part of it. They get 3 games at home and then off they go out west again for 6-8. Finally changes after this trip. I hate, hate, hate losing games like this one when you get such good pitching and the hitters act like clowns at the plate.

Great pitching the last two games with two shut outs. Castillo is officially an ace in my mind. His stuff is so tough to hit. A bit wild with 5 BB's, but countered with 11 K's and just 2 hits in 6 innings. His 1.76 ERA in 9 starts with Bell/DJ controlling his IP at 56.1 continues to pay dividends. Duke tried to let them score, but Lorenzen shut the door. Senzel, Puig and Suarez with good nights at the plate. Votto is just embarrassing himself and admits it. He needs to get it together for them to make a good run at it. Maybe when they get back to GABP.

Can't believe we got him for Strailey. Also Jose's play at SS has been amazing, it is crazy to think that he and Detrich both didn't have big league jobs prior to spring training & we got them both on minor league deals.

Just an update on our farm system

Louisville - 15-20 (5 GB)
Chattanooga - 20-14 (1 GB)
Daytona - 17-17 (2.5 GB)
Dayton - 12-22 (11.5 GB)

Prospect watch -
Jonathan India (Daytona) - 31/123, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 16 RBIs, 10 BB, 2 SB - .254/.326/.434
Jose Siri (Chattanooga) - 34/122, 19 runs, 7 doubles, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 6 SB - .279/.343/.410
Tyler Stephenson (Chattanooga) - 23/81, 11 runs, 3 doubles, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 8 BB - .284/.348/.432
Taylor Trammell (Chattanooga) - 27/104, 18 runs, 1 double, 1 triple, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 25 BB, 6 SB - .260/.398/.375
TJ Friedl (Chattanooga) - 19/87, 16 runs, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 17 RBI, 14 BB, 7 SB - .218/.340/.345
Tejay Antone (Chattanooga) - 4 wins/2 losses - 2.84 ERA - 38 IP
Joel Kuhnel (Chattanooga) - 2.41 ERA - 4/5 saves - 18.2 IP
Tony Santillan (Chattanooga) - 0 wins/1 loss - 3.34 ERA - 35 IP
Brian O'Grady (Louisville) - 31/89, 14 runs, 8 doubles, 6 HR, 18 RBI, 18 BB, 9 SB - .348/.450/.640

Others of note
Phillip Ervin (Louisville) - 21/79, 6 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 9 BB, 4 SB - .266/.344/.367
Scott Schebler (Louisville) - 3/22, 2 RBI, 1 BB, (7 SO) - .136/.208/.136
Sal Romano (Louisville) - 1 win/2 losses - 6.38 ERA - 18.1 IP - 21 SO/10 BB
Lucas Sims (Louisville) - 2 wins/0 losses - 4.45 ERA - 32.1 IP - 49 SO/14 BB
Cody Reed (Louisville) - 1 win/2 losses - 3.53 ERA - 15.1 IP - 21 SO/7 BB
Jackson Stephens (Louisville) - 3 wins/0 losses - 3.18 ERA - 22.2 IP - 23 SO/10 BB

One thing that concerns me is for as long as we've been "rebuilding" we've failed to stockpile minor league talent. There are really no big time prospects in Louisville right now and O'Grady is the only prospect who could be called up soon aside from the vets down there. Most of our big time talent is stockpiled in Chattanooga, I expect Trammell to get promoted to AAA maybe midway through the season. Daytona and Dayton are really lacking talent the only guys who have down there worth anything is India and Greene who won't be ready for a year or two.

Senzel and Winker just ran into each other and were down for a bit and my heart stopped but both staying in the game.

With the MLB draft next month I figured we could discuss our options there. I don't really follow it as closely as I do the NFL Draft but everything I've been reading says that we're going to take Nick Lodolo a LHP from TCU. So far this season he is 6-4 (W/L), 83 IP, 2.39 ERA, 100 Ks vs 19 BBs. In his career 18-9, 238.2 IP, 265 Ks vs 75 BBs, with a 3.66 ERA.
