Da Reds thread

That would be a good pick. They need more lefties and not seeing much need for a position player in the first round.

Today was another example of Bell not having it together as a manager with the pen. He cost them this one. First, Mahle had pitched too well to have him come out and pitch the 7th with the high winds blowing out at SF. Second, never use Duke in a tight game, but he got away with it. Mop up only until the FO wakes up and kicks him to the curb. Third, why Hernandez again? He pitched two great innings the night before and Bell has him coming in to protect a one run lead? He had several guys in the pen to use there that had pitched much less the night before including a couple who had not pitched since Friday. Major brain fart and it needs to stop.

Sports commentators questioned the same things I stated about about Bell's decisions Sunday. He never answered the question about using Hernandez, talked all around it claiming it was the situation. Which tells me he went with faulty analytics instead of baseball common sense. If he was going with a RH out of the pen, he had Hughes who had not pitched since Wednesday in Oakland, Lorenzen who had not pitched since Friday at 1.1 IP, and Stephenson who had pitched 1 inning the night before. Any of the three are a better choice (in order) than Hernandez after throwing 25 pitches the night before and being on short rest.

The other question they asked Bell was about not pulling Mahle (my point) when he had two relievers ready in the pen at the start of the 7th. He obviously had thought far enough ahead to get the two guys ready. But again, he talked around it with no real answer other than he liked how Mahle had been pitching to that point. Which means he was situationally ignorant. He went on to say after he sent Mahle out and Mahle walked the very first batter he knew the worst that could happen was a HR being hit to tie the game. What kind of dumb analysis it that? No sh-- Sherlock. The classic managerial move when a guy's pitch count is higher late in a tight game with the lead, if you do let him start the inning you let him pitch only until he lets a runner on base. That happened. Bell lets him keep pitching with two relievers ready. HR happens - tie game. Go on to lose with the next dumb managerial move above.

He needs to learn from these amateurish mistakes and make changes or this is not going to end well.

Please tell me this team is now going to hit like expected. Very nice comeback win.

I've seen fans debating on what to do with Scooter when he gets back. Do you continue riding Detrich and work Gennett off the bench or do you immediately hand him back the starting 2B job? I really hope the offense comes alive when he returns.

The Redlegs take the series against the Cubs after winning back to back games of the 3 game series. Joey was 2/5 with a run and now had a 5 game hitting streak maybe he is getting out of the slump.

If it's me, I work Scooter back in over a few weeks playing two out of every three to four games. Dietrich deserves playing time. If Winker doesn't get his act together soon he can play LF. I'm seeing really good signs with JV. He's starting to track the pitches better and is adapting to how the opponents have changed their approaches/pitches. Puig needs to get it together, though. Hopefully with the warmer weather he will also heat up.

It's such a good feeling when Luis is pitching. We finally have an ace. Even after the missed ump call at 3B and the dumb dink hitting the bag and bouncing over Suarez head, it still felt like Luis would be fine, and he was. The pen's improvement has been spectacular. Really nice series win against the Cubbies.

After a throw away game played with a lack of interest by the good guys, today's shut out by Mahle and the pen was a welcome sight.

Starting to think Disco needs to get taken out of the rotation. I just don't know who takes his spot until if/when Woods ever comes back. The last two starts by Castillo and Disco have been horrible, we've really burned the pen those two games.

So I'm wondering if its time to consider giving Casali more starts? I know Barnhart is on a long term deal and a former Gold Glover but to me he seems to have regressed. Not to mention Curt seems to have more offensive production than Tucker too.

Agree on Disco. He has no "out" pitch and has been given plenty of time to develop one. Maybe they wait until/if Wood can pitch unless there is a quality guy to call up in Louisville. I consider Casali an equal to Tucker. It appears Tucker is about to break out of his slump finally. Casali frames pitches better while Tucker is quicker defensively.

Player of the game has to be Nick Senzel: 3/5, 1 double, 4 runs, 1 BB. He had a boneheaded decision to steal but his hustle allowed him to escape the tag and reach 2nd and a hustle play late in the game allowed him to get his double. Then he had this gem of a defensive play to get Rizzo out:

So good to see our VFL starting and playing well. Knew he would make it to MLB since high school. That he plays for our Reds just makes it sweeter. He's even better at 3B and 2B. But he will adapt wherever they want him to play as the world could see today.

Bats are waking up. That's a good sign. Looks like Scooter will be ready in a 2-3 weeks per Bell. Let's get this thing to .500 and beyond.

I know this isn't the old days of baseball but at some point this series against the Pirates a Pittsburgh player needs to wear a fastball in the ribs for what happened at the start of the season.

This team just doesn't want to get to .500. We get within 4 games of it than start losing. Since May 16th we've flipped flopped wins and losses unbelievable.

Looks like a split for today. Good news coming. Alex Wood has been traveling with the team and throwing. Will probably be starting about the same time Scooter returns. Curious to see who goes down. Glad to finally have choices to make in SP's. We know Castillo, Roark and Gray are locks. If Wood is healthy he is a lock. That makes it between Mahle and Disco.

Senzel's special.

It seems the bats are finally alive but the only one that doesn't seem to be catching fire is Peraza. I thought after last year he would take another step forward but I guess the loss of playing time to Iglesias and Dietrich has hurt him. At this point I'd honestly consider sending him down to Louisville like we did Scheb to work himself out of the funk. The only question is who takes his place on the bench? Blake Trahan is already on the 40 man roster and can play SS and 2B but I've been impressed with what Christian Colon has been doing down in Triple AAA. He has MLB experience and is slashing .319/,394/.422 with Bats and plays 2nd, 3rd, and SS but we would need to clear a spot on the 40 man roster for him to be called up.

Also during the game they said Bell pretty much confirmed that Lucas Sims will be called up to start tomorrow's game. In 9 starts has a 3-0 record with a 4.06 ERA.

Surprised on Peraza as well. He looks like he has regressed and would be all in favor of an adjustment period in Louisville.

Don't know about you, but I see pressure building toward a trade or two. Of course they have the option of just letting Puig play out his contract if there's nothing available they want in trade. May be too early to decide on trying hard to keep him or not. Same with Wood. There's some talented parts on this team that will not be getting enough playing time once Scooter is back. Then you look at guys like Colon who have earned the promotion. I want to keep Dietrich around for his bat and versatility.

I hope they sign Iglesias for SS on a multi-year deal. That guy has been reborn with us.

Yep - they show him in the line-up on their website this AM. Hope he does better than the Pirates version did yesterday.

With the MLB draft next month I figured we could discuss our options there. I don't really follow it as closely as I do the NFL Draft but everything I've been reading says that we're going to take Nick Lodolo a LHP from TCU. So far this season he is 6-4 (W/L), 83 IP, 2.39 ERA, 100 Ks vs 19 BBs. In his career 18-9, 238.2 IP, 265 Ks vs 75 BBs, with a 3.66 ERA.

Nick Lodolo - Baseball - TCU Athletics

Bump - well done, Burhead.

The Athletic staff just mock drafted him to our guys as their first pick (#7).

Derek Dietrich hit 3 homers tonight against the Pirates. Lucas Sims did a hell of a job and showed enough to warrant another start: 7.1 IP, 9 SO/1 BB on 100 pitches (68 strikes). Gave up only 6 hits but the very last pitch in the 8th he gave up a grand slam after running out of gas but did his job by giving the pen some much needed rest & getting the win. They did mention that Puig was taken out of the game with a potential lower body injury.

I think Dietrich has to play a lot even when Scooter comes back unless one of them becomes a trade piece. Dude has 17 HR's already.

Sims looked good. Lower body pitcher - strong as can be from the hips down. That takes a lot of pressure off the arm.

I'd flip him to left field when Scooter gets back and put Winker on the bench. Then if we trade Puig at the deadline we can insert Winker back into the starting line up at right. A starting line up of this has some serious power:

1B - Votto
2B - Gennett
3B - Suarez
SS - Iglesias
LF - Dietrich
CF - Senzel
RF - Puig
C - Barnhart/Casali
