I'll tell you what I think is F'ed up: The fact that so many Gator and Bama retreads are mentioned as possible UT coaches. Makes me pull for keeping Dooley if a big name hire isn't available.

I don't want a bargain basement imitation Meyer or Saban. I want a coach that wins at UT.

Then why on earth would you pull for keeping Dooley? Makes no sense.

Mullen isn't going anywhere and I can't blame him. He is the man down there already, and it would be a risk for him to come up here.

Career suicide? Dang, dude. I would love to see how you feel about a team you disliked. Quite possibly the most hateful and negative view of UT from a "supporter" I have ever seen.

Not sure how anything I said was hateful. What I meant was he could pick and choose his job at this point so why would he pick TN. If you havent noticed, we are a mid-tier program who hasnt been relevent in almost a decade. Lets see here - good NFL head coaching job and continue to build his case for the HOF, or........get third-fourth in the SEC east for a few years and disappear into the coaching abyss.

Mullen would be 5 times better than CDD, but he probably wouldn't be in my top 5 of coaches, maybe not even top 10

I probably thought about the same thing earlier this week, but then I started looking at his record and the record of other viable candidates, and he's much more proven and/or has fewer big question marks than most of the others. Who would you have ahead of him?

I like Dan Mullen as Tennessee's next coach - lots of upside:

1. Unlike, say, Holgorsen of WV, Mullen knows the SEC and the athletes you need to win in this defensive-minded league, where a 17-14 game is considered a shootout.
2. Mullen is a better recruiter than Derek Dooley. According to Scout.com, his 2011 class was only ranked 45th nationally vs Dooley's 10th-ranked class. But in 2012, MSU's recruiting class was ranked 18th, higher than Tennessee at 25th. As of today, MSU's 2013 class is again listed at 18th, Tennessee 23rd. Mullen's recruiting record is quite an achievement considering that Starkville, MS is the Siberia of the SEC - a little nothing of a town in the middle of nowhere.
3. If Mullen's dreams are big, he should know he can win a NC at Tennessee, but not at MSU. The Bulldogs' only SEC championship came in 1941. As near as I can tell, their highest national ranking at season's end was 9th - in 1940.
4. Mullen wouldn't cost as much as some others, including Gruden. He makes $2.3M at MSU, so another $1M should be enough of a financial enticement (BTW, Dooley's salary of $1.9M ranks him 10th in the SEC among coaches - he is shamefully underpaid).

They have the easiest schedule in the conference this year: UK, Auburn, UT, Arkansas, Ole Miss, A&M... Let's see how he fares against a ranked team in Bama & LSU. Out of conference was Troy, South Alabama, Middle TN, and Jackson St.

If State can beat either Bama or LSU, Mullen ought to be SEC CoY.

pretty much agree with this (except I think it would cost closer to $4M a year to get him here)

What is wrong with Strong or his resume?

Strong is an interesting prospect, but as a HC, he hasn't beaten anyone yet. He has had back to back 7-6 seasons at Louisville. He has a single win over a top 25 ranked team (and it was a W Virginia squad ranked #24). His team is looking good this season, and I'll be interested to see how the season ends up, but, right now, his resume doesn't look as impressive as Mullen's does with wins over several good SEC teams.

He is a proven winner as offensive coordinator with Florida and as Head Coach at Mississippi State. He coached/called and won lots of big games while at Florida and then has taken a consistentlty underachieving Mississippi State team and has them playing competitive SEC football.

He knows how to use the talent he has on the roster and he also knows how to win big games. Being head coach at UT wouldn't be a huge jump for him and I feel like he could step right in and get us on the right track. He also doesn't have any of the baggage that a guy like Petrino has and I feel like he is one of the top offensive minds in the SEC right now. If I was in change of the next coaching search, which you know I am, Mullen would be my first call.

Plus, with the offensive talent we already have I think he could easily get that side of the ball moving quickly and then hopefully hire an SEC level defensive coordinator to handle that side of the ball. He likes somewhat mobile QBs and Peterman could easily fit that bill until he brings in the exact recruits he wants to fully run his offensive system.

Hire Dan Mullen now and forget all the talk about Gruden (isn't coming to UT) and Petrino (probably be investigated for something right now.)

Mullen is on the verge of landing MSU in hot water with the NCAA (Autry, Redmond, and Newton).

I like Mullen as a coach but you left out the most important issue with him. He can't recruit a lick. He's just not a good fit for Tennessee right now.

1. He's a terrible recruiter
2. Has no significant SEC wins.
3. He won't leave MSU for UT

1. I'm sure it's hard to get top recruits to Starkville.
2. He is still doing better than Dooley and as offensive coordinator at Florida he had lots of huge wins.
3. Did he tell you that or something? Money talks. Plus, he knows we have a big recruiting advantage over Miss State in both money and facilities.

Then it'll be hard to get recruits to Knoxville. Tennessee is not exactly a hot bed for recruits. Mississippi actually has some pretty decent talent, it is just small population wise. Per capita, they have the most talent in the NFL last I checked. I realize the resources are better at UT for sure, but he has not proven himself. Hugh Freeze is going to out-recruit the hell out of him with about the same resources.

Obviously, I'm not sure he wouldn't leave MSU, but it would be an uphill battle. If you threw 3.5+ million at him, I think he is possible, but I just don't think it is worth it at that point.
