Dave Hart Mr. Controversy

I see the reason for your emotion and why you feel like Hart foisted something on you, but your disturbingly angry reaction comes across as radical. I think this is going to end badly for you if you don't accept the olive branch of the basketball team keeping Lady in their name. Burning Hart and Cheeks in effigy, because the softball teams competes as the Vols might get you on the news...for 5 minutes.

I think this is a very good point, but ... I'm not sure with the compromise for basketball that the opposition is nearly as vitriolic as we're reading in this thread.

Mature adult?

So much stupidity in this thread, starting with the laughable notion that student athletes should get to decide how the university gets to brand itself. The idea is utterly moronic yet some of you keep saying it apparently believing it. Truly head-shaking.

I have always enjoyed women's athletics at UT. All of you irrationally vindictive, whiny, bitter, delusional Hart haters are not doing your beloved Lady Vols any favors. Deep down you really do look like elitist snobs, not to mention extremely short on memory, especially with comments like the Lady Vols being the only program nationally known or having represented the university well or whatever the precise nonsensical assertion was. You make average, solid Tennessee fans that are happy to support ALL Vol teams, men and women, feel accosted. Real equality would be draw enough fans to support your own damn programs - I'm glad that's not the model, but the more you b!tch and moan and dramatize and hyperbolize, the more that's how I feel.

Flame away, don't care.

I apologize for insulting you. But, your comments are wrong and represent a total lack of understanding and comprehending. I am emotional about it. Not so much the act of doing what they did which I totally disagree with but how it was done. I can visualize Hart and Cheeks meeting about this and it went something like this: DH: "I am going to just come out with an edict and say we are going to do away with using Lady Vols." JC: "Oh, we can't do that, Pat might not like it." DH: "I am not really concerned about what Pat likes. I've retired her anyway." JC: " I think it would be better to tell everyone the women's basketball team will keep the name but all the other teams we will gender neuter immediately. Then later when the controversy dies down we'll say we can't have all the women's teams as VOLS but the basketball team different so they're going to be VOLS too. We'll do this incrementally." DH: "That's a great idea boss. Hey I can make up some story about surveying the women's athletic teams and they all like this move. These hicks around here will believe this." JC: " I like it, I like it."

Hart was on the nation tonight. Brice and Chris Low asked him the tough questions about branding, the Lady Vol logo, etc. Hart's responses were clear, concise, and well-founded. After originally siding with those of you who wish to re-instate the brand for all women's teams, I left my vehicle on Hart's side. I would recommend those of you labeled as "fanatics" head over and listen to the conversation as soon as it's uploaded. Perhaps you can better understand the other side of the argument after listening. Again, the radio broadcast is The Nation.

Sports Radio WNML - "The Nation" w/Chris Low & John Brice - Sundays 6 to 7pm

What were his reasons? It makes no sense to me and seems like a bad business decision....I'm not emotional about it like the others but curious as to how that is a good decision.

it is a horrible decision........if you love women you should support the Lady Vols name to be reinstated......no other logical reason other than being a female hater that thinks they should stay in the kitchen and bedroom.

:lolabove:...Really?...No other reason possible?

Just when I think an argument can't get more absurd.

Give me a legit reason why the Lady Vols should be stripped from the women's teams?

Marketing and brand confusion. There's a general trend everywhere recently to drop "Lady" names from women's sports in favor of uniting under one brand.

Gotta admire that debate tactic! Let me try. If you want any other Vols team besides the basketball team, to have Lady in front of it?... You want to club baby seals! :yu:

See that makes absolutely zero sense to me.....I'm not attached to the name.....I have always cheered for all vols teams but just recently became what I would call a true lady vol bc I have a daughter who is an athlete and lady vol crazy.....I don't see the point to getting rid of the brand bc how confusing is it? All women want the logo and guys that are lady vols fans want the logo. The guys that aren't could care less what they are called.....it looks like it would cost us money as well....we own tons of Vol stuff but for Christmas I had to buy my daughter around 200 dollars worth of lady vol attire.....looks like we will be cutting our market in half.

It is only confusing to Jimmy Cheeks, Dave Hart and like minded individuals.

If that were the real reason then they wouldn't be keeping Lady Vols name for the women's basketball team. That is even more confusing. All the women's teams are VOLS now except the basketball team. Are you sure?

Ah yes. Brand confusion. You know I never could figure who they were talking about when the were talking about the Lady Vols. Were they talking about the men's teams or the women's team. That word Lady in front of the Vols always confused the matter for me. Brand confusion? Really? They actually believe people are stupid enough to believe that? SMDH...

I think keeping it for basketball makes no sense either. It's obviously just a compromise offered to the die hards who will never be convinced by any argument.

You're not really grasping the concept.

Then 'splain it to this old dumb hillbilly.

I'm not calling you dumb and I'm sorry if it came off that way. Just saying what you're describing isn't what I'm talking about at all.

There's a very plausible reason why Nike came back and advised us to brand everything under "Vols" and use the Power T logo. It has zero to do with power or sexism and everything to do with brand continuity and money.

We can agree or disagree about what's best. But all this venom, conspiracy theories and pettiness is useless.

How does it create more money?

I think this decision to go to Nike was bad. Nike is like Walmart of the sports world. They make a lot of things but none very good. Their golf clubs and golf shoes stink. Their apparel doesn't seem to be made very well and doesn't fit well. Their shoes in any sport are marginal. I don't think their stuff is very stylish either. The Oregon football team looks like a bunch of clowns.

Yet, All the recruits raved over it. Counzo stated that players wouldn't come here to play ball because of addidas.
