Defense & Special Teams - It's About Coaching

We had a complete change of coaches from last year. One thing has stayed constant-the players. We are getting similar results. So, what do you think the main problem is?

Umm,the players?

If our D at least played high school level, we would be killing them. Either fire the D coordinator or forfeit- our special teams and defense is not prepared and can't make basic jr high plays. We are easily getting worse on D every game. Not panicking, just plain obvious lack of coaching.

I'm glad some people are able to take their orange glasses off. Our poor defensive performance... by far... is more a reflection of poor coaching.

We are being out schemed game after game.

Crap... even Kentucky's defense is playing better against MO than ours did. I guess they have more speed that we do as well.

Not giving up on the team, but anyone who thinks this team is being prepared and coached up... especially the defense and even special teams today... needs to open their eyes.

They are not learning some of the basic fundamentals of football (e.g. angles, coverage, positioning) and that has nothing to do with talent... it's coaching.

Amen. Your post is dead on. Then you add to that the fact that we are slow and soft up front and you have the pathetic disaster we have witnessed now for 3 weeks.

Actually they probably do. This is the slowest UT defense I have ever seen, and I've been watching UT football for over 30 years.

Give me a break! Nothing dumb at all about his statement. Are you seriously going to try and tell all of us that the result on the field is not a direct reflection of the coach?

Speed is an excuse to use when there is no other excuse. Its true you can't coach speed, but you can coach schemes, angles, lanes etc. You know all the things coaches are supposed to do.

Oh, and here's a good one for you: Tackling! One of the most fundamental aspects of playing defense. Which obviously we have no idea of how to do or coach.

Let's just fire butch.

Tell that to Aubrun, they only won 3 games last year. The same players are there and now they are 8-1.

In case you have not noticed they are winning with their offense that was recruited by Malzon. Their defense is just as bad but we cannot take advantage.

Dude you don't think they have been coaching that ?!?!? They talk about it all the time man. At some point man you have to look at you players. Heck they are so slow Auburn players are out running the dang angles. We have had different 3 different DC's and have had the same problems.

You should apply for the DC job as I am sure they are being taught wrong in practice.

I have no idea if they're being "taught wrong" or not, but pure observation of the play on the field is evidence to anyone who understands football that they are not being "taught right".

Special teams... especially... is not that hard to teach players the importance of position.

Dude! Its fairly damn obvious, just watch the game! Don't you think that common sense would tell you, that how they PERFORM in the game is a direct result of how well they are coached in practice? A direct reflection of Coaching? I mean come on.

Auburn did too

Haha are you serious?? You expect poor coaching and recruiting by the past staffs for 3 years to be fixed by a new staff in 11 months? It's still the same players

Just keep on blinding yourself.

I'm not giving up on anyone or making any kind of final conclusion about anyone...

BUT... the things the OP is talking about have nothing to do with the past 3 years or even "recruiting". They have to do with guys week after week after week making the EXACT same mistakes. It is about guys being constantly out of position on D. It is about bad reads on plays that players SHOULD have been prepared for by their coaches in the film room.

The defensive coaching in the last 3 games has been nothing short of horrible. That's not to say there aren't talent deficiencies. There are. But not enough to explain the last 3 weeks on D... and not even close.

And oh yeah... they came out and stopped Aub a couple times. Auburn adjusted... I'm still waiting for UT's DC to adjust.

The fact is that they are winning. It doesn't matter how it is done. Good coaches win. I'm not saying that Butch won't get it done here. But, this D is pathetic. Plain and simple.
