Deferring to 2nd half is stupid

That's it.

If I was CJH and I won the toss Saturday, I am taking the ball. This offense needs to score as often as possible, and you can't risk even a single possession.

Take the ball coach Heup, if by some wild chance you are reading VN these days.

Get the ball and go out there and punch UGA's defensive front right in the mouth while our O-line is fresh. Set the tone and hopefully get some points on the board, but whatever you do, don't defer to the 2nd half.

I know a bunch of ya'll will disagree, but I remember when no one did that. It was common sense back then. You win the toss, you take the ball.

The game is not the same as "back then"

You make a strong case hill, but I am not convinced.
Because it makes too much sense to try to "double up" possessions at the end of the half and after halftime. We almost pulled it off against Mizzou if it weren't for that fumble, and that absolutely changed the game. Imagine if we came out of halftime leading 14-10 and getting the ball back instead of being down 13-7. That was a huge swing and absolutely destroyed our momentum.

Times have changed, Coach Majors.

What are the percentages on getting the chance to 'double up' when deferring to the 2nd compared to when receiving the ball in the 1st half?

Anyone know? Would be interesting to know that.

Confused about how far “back then” goes. In my 29 years I have always seen the strategy be to take the ball first in the second half.

I Totally agree. Mckonkey is hurt, and I think Brock Bowers is hurt.
I have been purposefully avoiding the talking heads this week. I hate getting my hopes up.

I really hate listening to know-it-alls who have nothing better than to talk about how bad the Vols are and how great Georgia is, or how we need to change QBs or worse.

Besides, they are all wrong most of the time anyway.

Well when you know you're getting the ball back you can use that in your strategy. In our offense we only need 60-90 seconds to get down the field at least in to FG range. So using your timeouts wisely when the other team has the ball is critical. Bill Belichick was an absolute master at this strategy when he had Brady (not so much now with the bammer at QB)

Do you think we beat ga at home. When we do, and they lose the sec against Bama what bowl game do we deserve?

FGs aint gonna cut it.

With JMs arm the Vols should be scoring at will on pretty much anyone. The exception being the loss of Bru and now Thornton. I am just hoping someone steps up this week. Keyton has been doing better, but we need someone to pull a Hyatt in the passing game.

I don't see why Georgia won't be able to stifle UT's rush attack the same way Alabama did the the 2nd half and how Missouri did pretty much the whole game. I thought the Vols were a great run team, but it doesn't look like it when facing tougher opponents.

Maybe Nico will be as good as Tom Brady or Peyton one of these days. It would be nice to see another one from the Orange.

Unfortunately for Joe it takes a lot more than an elite arm to score at will. If all you needed was arm talent he'd be undefeated as a starter. I would gladly trade some of his arm talent for some more talent between the ears.

I am not very hopeful after getting dominated by Missouri last week.

If the Vols pull off the upset, they will end up 9-3 with a win over Georgia late in the season at home, but not good all season on the road.
I would say a nice Florida bowl game would be in order. What bowl would you predict?

After looking over the top 25, I have no idea. Arizona stands out as an interesting bowl matchup...I guess.
