Democrats plan to introduce articles of impeachment as early as Monday

A lot of people think that Nikki Haley will run for the Republican Party nomination in 2024. She is the first legit contender to make a clean break with Trump.

"He went down a path he shouldn't have. And we shouldn't have followed him, and we shouldn't have listened to him. And we can't let that ever happen again." -- Nikki Haley

She was expressing regret in believing that Trump would concede after the meeting of the electoral college on December 14th.

Just for my own understanding, but do you think our presence and influence is needed in 2021 in SE Asia? I'm going to automatically assume you think it was OK after WWII.

Not now; I think we should be friends but never colonizers of a sort. Perhaps provide assistance if asked, but even a "protector" role except perhaps against aggression from a country like China is questionable. That last part still goes back to pre WW2 decisions by Chamberlain - handling a smaller crisis early can be better than dealing with a much bigger one later.

The part after WW2 goes back to thinking of that day and trying to play Monday morning QB. There were two major evils at work and at odds. Colonialism and communism, and communism was great at exploiting countries who were captives of colonialism and wanted independence. Countries who allowed communists to eradicate colonialism simply traded one evil for another. We were dealing with the thought of the USSR and then China as one huge power capable of dominating the world and continuing to devour small countries like they did in Eastern Europe. That makes for decisions then to events that fortunately we've seen fail, so today we have the liberty to think somewhat differently.

I do think the best option today is to withdraw our manufacturing and much if not all of our purchasing from China. We are simply feeding the beast.

Republicans have never appeared more divided than they do right now... and it has everything to do with the idiot Trump. Misguided loyalty to Trump will end up getting Biden re-elected in 2024. Nikki Haley was right. The only way to save the Republican Party is to break with him... but you won't be able to do it.

It's not appear...

They ARE divided. All over the map. No principles. No identity. No ANYTHING

Ho Chi Minh begged Truman for help get the French out of the region but got the cold shoulder. When all else failed, he turned to the Chinese.

The British pulled us in to WWI and WWII and the French pulled us into Vietnam.

Now extrapolate her comments to warranting the complete **** show we all saw the culmination of today. Trump absolutely deserved censure and repudiation. I think he should have spoken up quicker when the Capitol was breached. But AS USUAL you idiots take it too far to the point I cannot support your ridiculous over reaction. Thus... another sham impeachment and he will take a victory lap again for this self imposed dumbassery. Congrats.

It’s almost like... we should stop listening to Eurotrash globalists and make our own decisions on what is best for our country. Who knew!

With regards to WWII we were going to get pulled in tho. Not so much on WWI I think tho.

Well, you have several groups, in descending order:
1. The populists that embrace Trump (Probably 60-80%)
2. The libertarians
3. The Evangelicals and Southern Heritage crowd
4. RINOs/Lincoln Project/NeoCon elitists (The Beltway and media types)

Haley will NEVER win the Republican presidential nomination. She is not a conservative.

Trump is not even a Republican. He just uses them. His only goal is self promotion because he's a conman
So why did you all fight so hard to keep him from destroying the GOP even further?

That is the $64,000 question. You are correct... Trump was not a god Republican in many instances. Yet, you guys seemed to hate him so much.

I don't mind it at all. This is how the Democrats will hold the Senate in 2022. Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania is retiring. Richard Burr in North Carolina is retiring. Rob Portman in Ohio is retiring. Those are possible pickups for the Democrats. Ron Johnson in Wisconsin will be vulnerable. He has moved way too far to the right in a purple state.

It doesn't make any sense, does it? If Trump runs now, he will split the Republican party. I would think the Dems would LOVE that.

So real question. If Republicans win control of the Senate in 2022. All they have to do is claim that any Democrat incited insurrection and can file an Article 14, and they can’t run for any office?

The great debate at the time was whether Ho was a nationalist or a communist first. Nobody seemed quite sure, but a lot of our OSS types who worked with Ho thought he was genuine. Ho probably learned policy and spent more time with the Soviets than the Chinese, and the Vietnamese had a lot of history with the Chinese ... most not good. The desperate take what they can get where they can get it, and Ho did deal with China. As far as I can tell the big motivating factor that caused us to back the French more than gamble on Ho was the threat of the USSR and the communists and socialists trying to grab power in France after WW2. Government after government failed in France during that time, and France in the Soviet bloc was not an attractive proposition to anyone in the free world.

Ho's life and travels do make for fascinating reading; apparently he was a charmer when he wanted to be. One big problem we have as Americans is still believing people think and make decisions like we do, some are similar, but the Asian world is very much different especially with respect to patience.

I'm interested to see how badly the republican senators get voted out of office the next election. Romney is a roasted duck for certain.
Pat Toomey and Richard Burr are retiring in 2022. Susan Collins isn't up for re-election again until 2026 and this would only help her in Maine anyway... and she might not even run again. Lisa Murkowski is up for re-election in 2022 and might face primary opposition, but even with her constant criticism of Trump, she has always been popular in Alaska. Ben Sasse might be vulnerable to a primary. Bill Cassidy's vote today probably means he has decided not to run again. As for Romney? His probably safe.
