Deshields #3 overall pick to Chicago

You either have the "want to" or you don't. I don't care if you say you have it. The proof is in the pudding. If you stand out of bounds after being shoved aside and watch the opposing team get three tries on a putback in a very important game, you ain't got the "want to". No coach, not even Geno can get it out of them if it isn't there. I saw a lot of lip service from players the last year or two. They knew what they needed to do and were coached on what to do because they said so in the interviews. They would just never fully implement what they were taught or what they were saying they needed to do in post game interviews. If they know what to do and don't do it, that is mostly, but not entirely on the player.

You just described a major flaw in CHW's coaching abilities but are not aware as you think you are helping her cause........

There's no punishment for the player if they aren't doing what they're told to. Holly doesn't bench anybody. We hear this year in year out about lack of effort, lack of hustle with Tennessee players, lack of trust on the court, lack of execution, etc. No matter how good a player is or how motivated they are, if there is zero reprimand for not doing what they're told they need to do, they're going to have lapses and wont push themselves as hard. Compare that to UCONN where Geno is a little crazy in regards to benching players who aren't giving him exactly what he demands, but the results speak for themselves. Same with Pat. She demanded 100% effort out of her players and the results were tremendous.

More over, Holly just doesn't develop her players. Look at Graves as an example. She beast inside as a freshman, a hard worker, super active on the boards, etc. She was a NFOY in a class with Jewell Loyd, Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson, Jonquel Jones, Alexis Jones, etc. Never got much better despite being a hard worker on the court and is out of the league after being a late 2nd round draft pick. Common denominator to every single problem with the Tennessee Lady Vols is Holly. It's crystal clear. And it's not going to improve until she's gone.

You’re referencing the game at home against MSST. I couldn’t believe Russell just stood there and was allowed to stay in the game. She completely quit on the play and no one on the bench seemed to care.

The university is doing a major disservice to these players by keeping Holly. Her inability to develop players is severely hurting their chances at a WNBA career. Of the players that have played under Holly as head coach, only Isabelle has had a steady roster spot. We have players that were in the top 5 or top 10 of their class that can't make a WNBA roster. Doesn't anyone see this as a problem? Over the past two seasons, the number of Lady Vols in the WNBA has been near an all-time low. Sadly, the people in charge don't care about the program or the players. It's such a shame.

Very true..and part of Isabelle came with Patt

It is amazing what you can get out of a human being if you say the right words and push the right buttons...
I've seen it.
Done it.

It's not even about reprimand, that is the last resort...It is about respect. Gaining the kids respect. If the kid respects you, they will give you all they have.

They don't want to disappoint someone they respect.

Who was going to come off the bench and play in Russell’s place and we actually still have a chance to win the game?!?!

In what year did we have depth at certain spots to sit a player down that wasn’t playing up to par?

Many coaches have done by just fine with players less than Cheridene Green, Kasi Kushkitua or God forbid, Kamera Harris.

Some refuse to grasp that it is not a talent issue.......

I'm seeing that. It's like it's the players fault if they aren't WNBA-ready on Day 1 of their freshman year, and if they don't develop, then it's their fault. Apparently, the idea of a coach making them a better player is an unrealistic expectation...

Green’s first year back off after sitting out due to injury, KK being a first year freshman post player, and Kamera Harris.....no comment

What coaches and with what players with those same limitations or “less than” are you referring to?

Some refuse to grasp that it has been a talent issue. IDC what anyone says, we’ve recruited brick layers, from all fronts.....the 3point line, layups, midrange, Izzy was the last player that I could watch with confidence knowing she could put the ball in the basket CONSISTENTLY

Even if you want to argue that it is a talent issue (which it isnt), who’s the one recruiting those bricklayers that cant put the ball in the basket?

You can not have both sides of the discussion.......one minute it is lack of effort....next minute it is these players are not good enough........do you not see that your defense of CHW remaining as HC are exemplified with your EVERY post????

entertaining isn't it......she thinks she is making a good point.......supporters brag about how elite players still want to play for CHW, yet when they get here they are no longer elite players........hummmmm

Keep digging......CHW completely owns this roster.......you know, since she has been the HC for 6 YEARS........

Less than a JUCO AA and a McD AA? Well, there's Louisville, MSST (McCowan wasn't good enough for Tennessee after all), Texas, Oregon, Oregon State, Mizzou, Maryland...I'm sure there are more. Like Alabama.

Green was healthy last season. So was Kasi. It was Holly's choice not to play them, not to mention that she's done nothing to help Kamera improve. Kamera was a fool if she thought she'd become a better player under Holly's tutelage. The track record of players who underachieved playing for her speaks volumes for itself. No comment indeed!

After reading the Lady Vols forums today my daughter asked me about the multitude of players who started for Geno but were never drafted or never made a WNBA team.

I told her that although all of Geno's players were coached up to WNBA caliber, the WNBA just didn't want a disproportionate number of his players in the league.

Maybe it's a combination of "talent" and coaching? I loved CPS but she didn't seem to be a great developer of individual talent, rather a master at getting talented players to play into a fairly rigid system. Obviously there have been plenty of stars that came through during her tenure but I noticed how the best team Pat ever coached, 1998, utilized an up tempo game that was completely different from past teams. Granted she had the players to do so, but over the next few seasons even with Catching and Randall as upperclassmen she slowed it down a lot as her newer recruits, though talented, weren't cut from that mold.

It's no secret UT won most of their games and titles with hard nosed defense and rebounding. It's also no secret UConn and ND have shown how well organized offensive teams can be nearly impossible to defend for an entire game. I've looked at some of the players that have passed through UT the last decade and shake my head at why some of them were given scholarships, but I gradually began to think it was due to the fact the UT system just didn't fit their individuals abilities. The Baby Vols class had talent but their pieces didn't fit together well at all. Harrison was that rare UT player who seemed to grow each year she was in the program. Plenty of others had good careers but didn't seem to improve much from their first days on campus until the end of their time.

LA Sparks play at Minnesota Lynx today at 4:00 PM Central on ESPN-2.

VFL Candace Parker will not play. She did not travel to Minnesota. Candace is dealing with a "minor back injury."
