Did anyone really expect Butch Jones to recruit this well for Tennessee?

Negative Ghost Rider

Just ready to see translation on-field...

Guess you didn't watch any games this year to see how much the gap closed against our toughest competition? No, we didn't win those games but we were much more competitive with just one class in.

The man knows how to sell a program.

It's also why Bruce Pearl was so successful here, he wasn't the best recruiter but he knew how to sell the program.

I doubt anyone could have seen how good he is at recruiting. Sure UT sells itself with Neyland and the facilities we have, but not to everyone.

More than one recruit has just lit up when he talks about his relationship with Butch Jones. In a world full of cynicism it still makes all the difference if a young man believes in the person who is selling him.

Butch is on a treadmill right now. He knows what he has to do in the first two or three years and he seems to be doing it, or doing better than he has to. I just hope he enjoys it enough to be able to keep doing it. Burnout is the biggest risk we face with him

I would just like to see us have above expectation results next year (like a miracle 9-10 win regular season) just to see how incredible our recruiting would be. Not saying it will happen, but imagine the players this staff could pull if a big season gave us constant media hype instead of 5-6 win seasons.

I certainly didn't. Not THIS well. I thought top 15 should be expected in any given year for a program like Tennessee that has our tradition and facilities. However top 5, two years in a row? No that was beyond my wildest dreams. I didn't think we'd see top 5 until we started contending for the SEC.

So many Vol fans thought that no one but Fulmer could recruit to Tennessee. No in-state talent, blah, blah.
This never made sense too me. UT has a ton to offer, and all you need is a coach who works hard and can run a program. Neither Kiffin or Dooley could do that. Kiffin could recruit but he never bought into the UT brand. Dooley, well let's not beat that horse.

Butch on the other hand has sold and brand. He's cleaned up all the rust on the power T and promoted UT. Stuff like that never crossed Fulmer's mind. If Fulmer had done half of what Butch is doing, he'd still be coaching at UT and have a few NCs. Butch is so thankful for the facilities and resources at his disposal and hasn't let anything go to waste.

No. Was worried about recruiting ability being a problem when he was hired honestly. This is beyond anything I could have hoped for back in December or 2012. If we can get to 8+ wins next season it may get even better.

No but I knew the only way he had a chance to win was to have top 3 classes. Top 15 classes get u dools results n the sec.

Now after watching his off the only way he ever ends up in cg is with a special qb because so far they have not out schemed an opponent yet.. I'm hoping that gets better otherwise we will be stuck with a 8-9 win coaching staff n hart will never fire him.

I want sec championships n not just bowl games..

Butch is a great recruiter for sure. However, I don't think it should be hard at all to recruit well at UT. Just get them on campus and let the fans, facilities, and atmosphere take care of the rest.

Definitely those things help, but, I'm afraid there's a little bit more to it than that. Like, for example, I don't believe that any UT coach in history has worked as hard as he and his staff since they've been here. Remember recruiting is just another work for selling and Butch is very good at it. We'll just have to see what the future brings. I'm sure it will be interesting. :)

GO VOLS!

If you give this freshmen team that got us 7 wins another year or 2, you might just see more than 8 or 9 wins.

Good thing, because no one else wants SEC Championships...that was so easy to type...why are your posts such trainwrecks?

The championships will come in a few more years (3-5 more seasons). Heck Fulmer took over a loaded program and it took him 5 seasons to win the SEC East (and SEC). But I am not in such a hurry given where we were. It appears that by your standards, only Saban is good enough. Not Richt (no SEC title for over 12 years), not Freeze (no sec title), not even the Barn's coach (8 win season in '14). No coach but Saban can satisfy your standards. That isn't my standard. After where we have been the past 10 years I am just thrilled to have a team winning more games that its losing and competitive in the SEC. Give me a 8-10 win seasons every year over a flyer on some new coach that will more than likely fail. Top 5 recruiting and 8-10 wins a season is great.

I have to say that I didn't really know what to expect with Butch. My initial thought was that he couldn't be any worse than Dooley. Also, I was skeptical about his promise to have the "best coaching staff in the country". He definitely gets an "A" for recruiting (as do several of the coaches). The jury is still out on how good this staff is. It will depend on how they can develop these players and how many of the big boys they can beat in the next couple of years.

He really has A LOT to sell and he knows how to lay it out there. The man deserves A LOT of credit for putting it all together. Keep that train rollin'...
