Did anyone really expect Butch Jones to recruit this well for Tennessee?

The biggest joke are from those who said----"Yeah he can recruit in the Big East, not in the SEC." Now those same people are saying-----"He won in the Big East, but his coaching style will never win in the SEC." He will prove both statement wrong.

Butch is a great recruiter for sure. However, I don't think it should be hard at all to recruit well at UT. Just get them on campus and let the fans, facilities, and atmosphere take care of the rest.

:lolabove: I did not see the recruits come to UT the last years of Fulmer, and during the Kiffin and Dooley mess. Give Butch credit. He has done a great job. Name one school that has been down like we have the last few years and Butch still recruits in the top 5 in the nation. That tells you a lot about the man. Starting next year, we will be winning on the field alot more. and you will see even more recruits head to UT.

Yes! The reason is because (1) he is a gifted speaker and can sell the program (2) Tennessee has everything it needs except a good coach and good players. It has the facilities. It has the history. It has the fan support. So,once we got the good coach, the program began to sell itself. (3) When bUTch first arrived, he could sell immediate playing time to the recruits and they would most likely rather go to Tennessee and play immediately rather than go elsewhere and have to red shirt.

Dobbs played as a freshman. Barnett played as a freshman. Hurd played as a freshman. Several offensive linemen have played as freshmen. At places with depth on the roster, they would have been buried behind the upper classmen.

Now, once the roster is full and depth is added, can bUTch continue to sell the program???????????

The new enrollees seem to indicate they are selling the family atmosphere and have a sincere interest in the kids as human beings instead of just recruits. I don't know how true it is, but several kids are saying things like this. The sales pitch will change as the program evolves, but the staff seems to be good at being timely with their messages.

I just hope the message in a couple of years is: "if you want to win championships, come to Tennessee."

The championships will come in a few more years (3-5 more seasons). Heck Fulmer took over a loaded program and it took him 5 seasons to win the SEC East (and SEC). But I am not in such a hurry given where we were. It appears that by your standards, only Saban is good enough. Not Richt (no SEC title for over 12 years), not Freeze (no sec title), not even the Barn's coach (8 win season in '14). No coach but Saban can satisfy your standards. That isn't my standard. After where we have been the past 10 years I am just thrilled to have a team winning more games that its losing and competitive in the SEC. Give me a 8-10 win seasons every year over a flyer on some new coach that will more than likely fail. Top 5 recruiting and 8-10 wins a season is great.

Amen!! Hallelujah!!...Great post. Butch's teams will not be perennial underachievers like Richts at UGA.
They will eventually take on their coachs personality...when that happens, we will be opening large barrels of whuparse on our tormenters.

No worries. When he was hired the first thing I did was tweet at him "GTFO YOU CAN'T RECRUIT IN THE SEC!!!!"

I like to pretend it motivated him to work harder...

It sounds like you are a very supportive and optimistic fan!

No but I knew the only way he had a chance to win was to have top 3 classes. Top 15 classes get u dools results n the sec.

Now after watching his off the only way he ever ends up in cg is with a special qb because so far they have not out schemed an opponent yet.. I'm hoping that gets better otherwise we will be stuck with a 8-9 win coaching staff n hart will never fire him.

I want sec championships n not just bowl games..

And so does 11 other SEC teams.

People saying that it's easy and not surprised are kidding yourself. Nebraska and Oklahoma has more success recently and all time than UT and they are getting stomped on recruiting. Nearly every power SEC school can offer what UT can, the difference is they have won something significant in the last decade. All of UT's tradition and resources just makes it possible to pull In top classes, you still need an amazing staff.

Not so fast! Look at the whole picture!
I think you must be an incredible salesman to recruit like the vol staff is!
Always give credit where credit is due!,

After reading some of the VolReports on the front page, you can see that CBJ and staff are doing a great job. I have been impressed with the discipline, APR and GPA increases. This says a lot.

I may get blasted for this but I questioned his recruiting ability when this hire was made. Now, I'm eating crow and the job him and his staff has done on the recruiting trail is outstanding. He could become one of our all time best recruiters if he keeps this up. Recruiting is very important when you're rebuilding a program. My question is, did anyone really expect Butch Jones to recruit this well for Tennessee?

No, 'cause Butch wasn't a "home run" hire.

Butch has done great but expected that someone could recruit because this University sells itself. Look at the tradition and the very best facilities that it has to offer and 100,000+ every Saturday. When Fulmer was at his prime he and Lane could recruit in top 5. Dooley was just a failure and got us way behind. I have to give Butch credit to get good recruits as early as he did with the mess Fooley left us.

Probably already been said but lets not forget that fan support plays a HUGE role as well. Filling up the arena showing support, social media...all pays off.
