Wow. The ranks of our armchair coaches seem to have really swelled lately. No wonder we've been in the dumps, our school hasn't adequately used this vast resource of knowledge and experience. /sarcasm

So the real question is, could other coaches have done any better given the circumstances CBJ had this year? In reality, I just don't think so. The only instance where I think CBJ really made blatant mistakes in judgement was against Oregon. He tried to play the field position game against a team that can drive the ball 100 yards in less than two minutes. But, they did that against almost everyone.

The blowouts are annoying and disheartening but could another coach have done any better under the circumstances? I just don't think if Saban or Gruden or (________) would have been our coach it would have changed much this year.

I think there will be much more meat for the debate once Butch gets more of "his" players in here to run "his" offense and defense.

GO VOLS! BEAT OFFSEASON!!

I think the poll would have been better if it was on a grading scale. Its not simple yes or no.

A 90-100
B 80-90
C 75-80
D 70-75
F 0-70

85 for Austin Peay
85 for Western Kentucky
75 for Oregon
70 for Florida
60 for South Alabama
90 for Georgia
95 for South Carolina
70 for Alabama
65 for Missouri
70 for Auburn
50 for Vandy
80 for Kentucky

98 for Recruiting
100 for Public Relations(including media, bringing back players, energy in the program)

So with the way I graded each game(which is based on my opinion only) Jones scored an overall 78 or C. Not bad for the schedule he had to play and it being his first year.

Hopefully he makes it into the 80's next year

This. Count did a fantastic job. I tried to find something to add to it, but he was spot on.

Edit: I would actually switch the Georgia and SC scores. I think he did a better job vs Georgia.. I feel like that one was "earned" but slipped away in OT. The SC win feels like we lucked into it with the crazy catch. Not that that is a bad thing. Just feel like Georgia was the best game for the staff.

how can anyone say he didn't do a good job coaching? yeah we could all question some calls...hell we could question saban last sec fieldgoal..Butch Jones did a hell of a job for what he was left and that was a poor coached team! Butch won his signature game in his very first season he's already done something dooley couldn't so give the dam guy a chance let him recruit "HIS PLAYERS" build a team around his coaching style and Im willing to bet $ we will be beating some teams in 2014

Less for Florida for starting Peterman.

Pretty good assessment of the season. Hard to argue with it. I might make the ratings for certain games a little bit lower, but overall Butch's Year 1 was a C minus IMO, great off the field and a little subpar on the field.

i voted no. i would give him a D. i truly believe that a better coach and assistants may have won up to 8 games. the kids seemed to bail on him after the SC game.

You're right. It had nothing to do with the fact that the next 3 games were against top 5 teams with significantly more depth and that he had to play the 4th sting qb.

it's a simple question without a simple answer
Perfect reply.
I stated before the season that unfortunately this staff would have to have some on the job training in the SEC. They made some mistakes along the way. The question is have they learned from them? We shall see.
I still stand by my belief that had Worley remained healthy, we are going bowling. If that had happened, then much of this debate would not be happening. The fact is Worley did get hurt and we had no one prepared to step in and take over the job. I understand that two were true freshmen that Butch wanted to RS. I'm mainly referring to Peterman. I can't imagine that this kid is really as bad as his Florida performance. This leads me to think it was a lack of coaching to some degree.
All any of us can really do is hope that this staff can "get it" on the field in the future because we've probably got them for the next 3-5 years.

no not saying that, but we looked beat before the games and it carried over into the vandy game. the vandy game alone should give him a D. it seemed like he would rather get a head start on recruiting than go to a bowl.

Pure BS. If that's the "reason" for past failures then the arrival of a positive and competent coach should have lifted the team. Instead, we saw just more of the same and maybe a little worse.

He lifted the team to a win over a top 15 team in year one something Dools couldn't do in 3 years, and did it with a less talented and more inexperienced roster. Get over your hate for BJ. He's here to stay for at least 2 more years.

I don't entirely disagree with LWS. We were young, and very limited at skill positions across the board. When Croom went down in the UK game, other than DY popping open here and there, our receivers were blanketed.

The DL was pounded and gassed by the end of the year.

However, the regression against Vandy really hurt the overall perception of the year. That was an offensive slopfest. It is amazing how one loss can leave a little cloud.

I don't believe we can judge this season as good or bad. CBJ is laying a foundation down that's going to take a few years to get even a base layer down. I say bring this question up in two years. We may get lucky and get superstar ( Cam, Famous Jameis) but that comes once in a blue moon. I will say one thing this staff will put in work. If dools were here we might be ranked 22, no way Malone would be a commit.

Same record as DOOLS but not as good players. Did beat South Carolina. Should have beat VANDY at home. Grade him slightly better than DOOLS but still not classify as good. If we had beat VANDY would classified as good if VANDY and UGA would classified as great.

I wish they had put a little more work into the Vandy game.

Yes. We saw that he could coach when playing Georgia and SC but we didn't have the depth and players were banged up by the end of the season. It's hard playing almost every snap of every game throughout a season like our first team did.

That was my only disappointment with the staff this year. We had 2 weeks to prepare and it just didnt look like we had a plan. But the rest went about as expected except I didn't think we would win vs USCjr and be as competitive as we were against UGA.
