Obama calls him his spiritual advisor. Before laying that title on someone you would think a person knows where that person stands on beliefs.
You are working under the assumption that Barack Obama was well aware of Wright's bigotry, I am working under the assumption that he was not. I would venture to say not only does Barack not attend every Sunday, he probably attends sparingly at best.
As for membership versus attendance, you are dead on.
Their is absolutely no way around that assumption. Obama considered this man a mentor and paid him as an advisor. He named his book after the title of one of Wright's sermons. Wright has published plenty of material (including the overtly bigoted sermons, as well as very implicit bigoted books and sermons). If Obama was unaware, then that is on the level of reckless negligence. You are working under the assumption that Barack Obama was well aware of Wright's bigotry, I am working under the assumption that he was not. Did you know he called him that before the Reverend's 10 seconds of fame?? If you did, you would assume he was a good spiritual leader up until that point in time.
IMO spending 20yrs with someone should tell you where they stand. I find it hard to believe he had no knowledge of the good Reverend's ideas. But, if he's that bad at reading people, do we really need him speaking to other leaders who make a living reading people?
Again, associating with someone on a casual basis and calling someone you spiritual advisor as well as being a member in their church are 2 different animals.
The evangelical right, especially those we now call neo-conservatives that line up with the evangelical right, were in no way casually acquainted with the CC. Many used it to get elected, and it is coming back to bite them in the ass.

Neither quality is attractive in a candidate for POTUS.
But you are ok with someone lining up with idiots as long as the person is the one in your avatar?
I think some people on here really don't get the importance of church membership.
For as high minded and intelligent as Obama presents himself, this certainly goes deeper than politics. On a personal level, he either agrees with Wright or feels he is owes him some kind of incredibly deep debt.I should perhaps read up on Wright before further commentary then, but as for now I consider this completely overblown and find it hard to believe a man in Obama's position could make this bad of a misstep.

I do not believe that people are making an issue of this simply because Obama was a member of Wright's church. The issue is that Wright was considered by Obama as a personal mentor and then paid as an advisor.I think you can say that about every politician, not just Obama.
Being a member of a church doesn't make you liable or guilty for your preacher's comments. If anything, the preacher is held at a higher accountability according to the Bible. From what I have read here, what is happening in contrary to that very fact.

As for me, I will certainly make an issue out of his being a member of the Church. Either he lacks a greater faith life (I believe that any faith life is a necessary component for having a just leader) or he attends a radical church and does not have the testicular fortitude to take his wife and leave that "place of worship" (as if espousing hatred could be considered worship in any form).
I consider more than just a few churches to be radical from my point of view, but that doesn't cast judgment on it's congregation. I would bet that more than a few people have left that church after that sermon. Saying damn in church and also pointing it towards the country you live in has probably not set well in the hearts of a lot of people. Even Obama showed is disapproval for it.
Of course it does. Either you agree with what they are saying or you're too weak to leave.
But Obama didn't leave and continued his assoc with the Rev. He only showed disapproval after it was brought up.
