Dilfer's critique of Dobbs, Ferguson and Bray as QB Prospects

I'm not being tough on him. I'm saying he wasn't mature enough to make sound decisions....on or off the field. Had nothing to do with Dooley.

Well you're right, but I think the unique circumstances surrounding the program and our former head coach warrant a different look at Bray than "he didn't get it done in college." That may affect his draft stock considerably, much like 2008 sank Arian foster. We all know how that turned out, and I feel (call it orange tainted glasses if you will) Bray is more than capable enough of being an excellent NFL caliber QB.

Dilfers analysis is pretty spot on about Bray. Top 6 NFL arm, but when the game is on the line he's pretty much lost.

Really . . . I've heard of a lot of players doing a lot of stupid things. Don't get me wrong. He wasn't exactly Joe Montana out there, but I'm just not sure he was really that immature compared to others. Plus, he wasn't exactly in an environment that nurtured mental toughness and leadership and every mistake he made was magnified because he was literally all we had going for us.

I won't speculate what he's capable of. That won't be apparent until he either does or doesn't grow into his physical potential. There is nothing I love more than bragging on my Vols, for any reason I can find. And that's why I don't say he's a bad kid/man, or reckless, or anything else. I simply think he didn't have the advantage of maturing at a rate that matched his circumstances. That's all.

For those of you who are having difficulty accessing this interview, I will go back and extract some of the additional nuggets contained therein. Initial impressions include the following: Dilfer was highly complimentary of both Dobbs and Ferguson. "Riley is more of a creator on offense, a guy who plays by instinct. . . . He has a unique feel for the game, almost like two sets of eyes."

"Joshua Dobbs is a really smart kid, can digest a lot of information. The VolNation got two really good ones in the class of 2013. . . . Both of them have a lot of upside. . . . These are two future BCS starters; they both just happen to be on the same roster right now."

508mikey, Dilfer is an NFL analyst for ESPN and the former QB for the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl following the 2000 season. He is also intimately involved in the Elite 11 Quarterbacks camp. As he pointed out, under those circumstances, he actually has the opportunity to spend considerably more time with these quarterbacks, one of whom was Dobbs last year, than any college coach can prior to their signing letters of intent.

Said Russell Wilson wouldn't make it in the NFL. He isn't always right. But he did play QB in the NFL. Whether he was good or not, he has to know something. But honestly, I trust what Gruden says about a QB more

Dilfer did not use these words but the portrait of Dobbs that emerges from his conversation with Ainge, is almost Peytonesque, in terms of his intellect and politeness. In fact, Erik reiterated that, in a previous interview with Josh, he told him, "Hey, tone down the 'yes sir, no sir' in the lockerroom,” suggesting that it would undermine the command presence a quarterback is supposed to possess.

Eric also said that they have already dubbed Dobbs and Ferguson as “the ‘Rocket Man’ and ‘the Wild Card," respectively. Dilfer described Dobbs as a “quiet assassin” in terms of his quarterback skills.

I still remember Chucky's sitdown with Andrew Luck. "You never throw the Venus on Spider 3 Y Banana!"

Dilfer won the SB with the Ravens, wasn't he a Buc at one time or another on their run of playoff bound seasons ? Can't remember and to lazy to look it up, still got some work to do.
I think there is a Gruden connection somewhere...

Forgive me Vollygirl but I will speculate. The kid has tremendous talent and will represent. You don't need me to tell you that the conditions on the hill for the past couple of years were not very conducive to player development. I may get blasted for saying this, but UT's athletic department failed on developing this young (soon to be NFL star) kid. He will find a spot in the NFL and in my opinion he will look back at his UT years and say,,,damn,,,we went through all of that.

Yes. In fact, he played for the Ravens only in 2000 but was in Tampa Bay from 1994-1999, and was a Pro Bowl selection in 1997 (Trent Dilfer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

No assumption could be drawn from their interview. Dilfer said simply that both of them were "future BCS starters" and that it was a little unusual to have two QBs of that caliber in the same class. To paraphrase Dilfer, he said that the eventual pecking order would, of course, be worked out in the course of competition for the starting spot.

So basically Dilfer said what many of us said for 2 years and were treated to torches and pitchforks for doing so.

I am excited about our qb situation, over the next few years, but we will have to be patient and temper our expectations until they gain experience in the SEC

He's a Ferguson. He'll do well. Think some memorable moments may be created by RF.
