BS meters went off right away. Disney doesn't make comments like this. Literally no support for this in the article. Not a quote from Disney confirming this. Just pure speculation.
What people don’t seem to realize about Disney scrubbing Song of the South is it has been pulled from circulation since the 80s (at least in the US). This is not some new ‘woke’ decision. Honestly the movie had controversy when it first opened in the 1940s.
The last time the movie saw any type of US distribution in the theater or home video was 1986. Then it was locked away in the vault.
Aside from a ride at 2 parks (both of which ironically went up in the 80s) there is no connection to modern audiences with the IP. You have to go out of your way to introduce kids to these characters. They don’t know who Briar Rabbit is. They don’t know Zipadee Do Da. And they are not legally available.
While the initial decision to scrub the IP was based on racial stereotypes within the movie, a conclusion made nearly 40 years ago, the current updating at the parks has just as much to do with connecting with today’s audience as converting 2000 Leagues Under the Sea into a Snow White ride.
