Disney: The Most Evil Business In The World

BS meters went off right away. Disney doesn't make comments like this. Literally no support for this in the article. Not a quote from Disney confirming this. Just pure speculation.

What people don’t seem to realize about Disney scrubbing Song of the South is it has been pulled from circulation since the 80s (at least in the US). This is not some new ‘woke’ decision. Honestly the movie had controversy when it first opened in the 1940s.

The last time the movie saw any type of US distribution in the theater or home video was 1986. Then it was locked away in the vault.

Aside from a ride at 2 parks (both of which ironically went up in the 80s) there is no connection to modern audiences with the IP. You have to go out of your way to introduce kids to these characters. They don’t know who Briar Rabbit is. They don’t know Zipadee Do Da. And they are not legally available.

While the initial decision to scrub the IP was based on racial stereotypes within the movie, a conclusion made nearly 40 years ago, the current updating at the parks has just as much to do with connecting with today’s audience as converting 2000 Leagues Under the Sea into a Snow White ride.

My how woke they are for keeping a film under wraps that earned a black man the first (albeit honorary) Oscar in Hollywood...

That'll show those racists!

Ahh the old hyperbolic sarcasm “that’ll end racism” argument. Works every time 🙄

The market will deal with this. In other news, copyright expires on Mickey Mouse next year. He goes public domain.

Not really. The copyright expires on Steamboat Willie. Today's Mickey is substantially different. However, using the Steamboat Willie Mickey also presents issues because it is trademarked and part of the Disney Logo.

There are two reasons florida exists. The MOB bosses of Miami who built south florida, and Disney, who took a bunch of sandy swamp full of alligators and built an empire. You're welcome florida. I would return that land to the swamp from which it came, sell it back to florida, and buy a small island off the mainland of the US, where they can't be used as a political pawn for criminals. Call the new place "fantasy land", and give florida the finger.
Having lived there for as long as I did, you could take Disney and 90% of the retirees in the villages with you. Would make FL and MUCH nicer place.

The stereotype portrayed does more harm than the good of winning an oscar.
Ah yes, the terrible carnage and “harm” produced by Song of the South. Literally hundreds of thousands of impressionable children became lifelong bigotted KKK members after seeing 90 minutes of singing rabbits, foxes, and bears. It is an absolute MIRACLE that the Republic survived such trauma.

Yep. So erase him completely.

I know I feel better that that lady is gone from the pancake syrup.
To a liberal, the point is never actually SOLVING a problem. It is impressing your fellow leftists with your ardent fervor in being SEEN to be doing something. For that, symbols work much better than solutions. Plus it is a whole lot easier.

Portraying black folks as caricatures is harmful. It is pretty disgusting to minimize that practice.

And...

The Film’s Cast Stood Behind the Movie

“Song of the South” counts among its ensemble Hattie McDaniel, the “Gone With the Wind” star and first Black entertainer to win an Academy Award. In a 1947 interview, she told the American publication The Criterion, “If I had for one moment considered any part of the picture degrading or harmful to my people, I would not have appeared therein.” Her co-star James Baskett echoed her support of the film, saying, “I believe that certain groups are doing my race more harm in seeking to create dissension than can ever possibly come out of the ‘Song of the South.’”

Let's put this into mathematical terms and say Disney is just 0.001 % right that the song could be offensive to some.

Why can't Disney, as an independent corporation, make the judgment to get rid of it? You are free to disagree with their reasoning. You don't have to take your kids or grandkids there, or buy Disney products, or see their movies.

But DeSantis or others threatening economic or other sanction to somehow backlash against their decision ... that is dramatic government overreach, don't you think?

Kinda a big deal for James Bassett to get that recognition in 1946. He literally was a first.

Too bad you want to downplay his accomplishment.

Give me a break with this ****.

Just because a guy won an honorary Oscar (whatever that is) doesn't mean Disney should feel great about this production. It doesn't mean it's not embarrassing to Disney to have this out there. It has nothing to do with the actor and Clear wasn't downplaying his accomplishment.

As far as I know, Disney has never called it racist. They never apologized for it. They never shamed the predecessors who created it. Essentially they said, nah, we don't want that out there anymore associated with our brand. It's truly bizarre that people can't get over it.

Sure. The award is still on the books.

Doesn’t change the fact the movie has had problematic caricatures since the day it went into production.

Yes this one movie is the root of all racism. Thanks to Lord Mickey for finally putting a stop to it 🙄

Seriously, if it wasn’t for the culture war how much thought would any of you give to Song of the South?

Did you flip out when they stopped doing the Electric Light Parade too? Or when Mr Toad’s Wild Ride became a Pooh attraction? Are you upset they took out the Michael Jackson movie at Epcot?

I remember going there as a kid and they had a parade if my memory is correct and that song was playing. I assigned no racial significance to it at all. Did not even occur to me that the singer was black.

Still, I'm not going to tell Disney what songs to play today.

The culture war has deranged people.

I can't take credit for this, but somebody said that "woke" being used as a pejorative is almost always a replacement for a complaint that would sound silly if you actually clearly defined it. Like the other day when Fox News ran this story:

FplgC_WXwAAclUi

It's much better to turn off your brain and call it "woke" because it sounds really, really stupid to explicitly complain that Lego made toys for kids with disabilities.

I haven't heard of any other theme parks in Florida being targeted by the state, what makes Disney the target of the ire of the Florida lawmakers?

I don't think any of the others are close to Disney in size and autonomy. Plus it's a world wide brand.
