I don't know how to feel about Martin because I haven't gotten over how Hamilton dumped Pearl after all the talk that, oh yes, he was staying. Bruce Pearl may never coach again, and if that happens, it will be a genuine shame, because he is one coach in a million. Will the next coach be as good? Did the bammers ever get another Bear Bryant? Pearl, infractions or not (juniors at a cookout, be still my beating heart!), took our program higher than it has ever been. He inspired players, fans, alumni, everyone to believe in UT Basketball as no one else. He took on everyone on our floor or theirs, and before this year of bitter news and constant distractions for him, his assistants, and the team, he usually won. He put us on the basketball map. Be certain, kenturkey, bammer, and gator fans are relieved he's gone. He is a winner and I don't care how many Illi-noise, O-hog-o St, or Michi-goon fans, who want to rehash his past, I disagree! We will be poorer without him, and he without us. Thanks again, Hambone! With an athletic director like you, who needs enemies? We have met the enemy, and he is YOU!!!!

Christ. You're comparing Pearl to Bear Bryant?

He is the man for now.....so YES....because what everyone on here says doesn't matter anyway....support the ZO for now....no other choice....he may very well be the man to take us to the next level....or previous level....but we should all stay positive for now.

h3LL yes! Loved what CBP brought to UT basketball (the style of play, engaging the fans and his understanding of UT traditions, big wins, not the 'AA mess) and thanks for that but time to move on.

Voted 'no' in the poll. Having never heard this individual speak a word or see him coach a game a better choice for me would be 'neutral'.

Supported UT even when Kiffin was babbling through his glory filled season. And through Coaches Mears, Devoe, Houston, O'Neil, Green, Peterson, Pearl...so to the haters club, move along. Now it is Coach Martin's time in the box. I will go out on a limb and say that I do not have any reason to expect UT to make the tourney next year. And with Pearl and the garbage that he caused by lying, UT would, in my opinion, been ineligible, which to me is worse than just not making it based on your play.

Lastly, to those who ask the question, will Scottie stay? Uh where would he go? Europe?
Maybe Coach Martin can teach him to play some defense Big 10 style.

I love it when people get referred to as pearl "haters"!! haha like you know something is wrong in your head when you actually support a man who told bold face lies over and over again until he ran himself into a corner. that being said how can you not like this hire? getting a coach in here who can teach some good fundamental basketball and get this team to play some defense will be good for the program.

NICE INSPIRING STORY- this guy is gonna be a good role model for sure...

In November of 1997, Martin was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and returned to the United States for treatment of a malignant tumor between his heart and lungs. He received his last treatment on April 20, 1998, and is now in full remission. He has used his courage and experience with the disease to promote awareness of cancer research and support cancer charities.

In 2008, Martin served as a spokesman for the inaugural Purdue Center for Cancer Research Challenge for cancer research, which attracted more than 1,000 runners and walkers to Ross-Ade Stadium and raised more than $30,000 for cancer research at Purdue. In his honor, the Cuonzo Martin Challenge Award was established.

Undecided.......but quite frankly it appears to me that no effort or real thought was made on this hire, of course MH may have had a short list before firing BP.

I'm really jazzed about it. I thought men's basketball was getting a bit too big for its breeches and I kind of missed those thrilling NIT match ups.

pearl never won squat here ..no sec title..no tournament championship(most were early exits) and no national championship...just lots of negative ...give the man a chance

It took all of about a day for our a bunch of fans to go from 'Dooley who?' to 'I like him and I think he's the right guy.' I assume UT fans all around will eventually be convinced Martin will have us in the final four within 5 years.
This would be the case no matter who Hamilton hired.

He could have hired Pee Wee Herman and the cheerleading section would break out the pom-poms. :worship: Most would be willing to wait and see, but what else can you do? Hoping for the best doesn't make a hire good.

The bottom line is this; the last 4 major hires, Hamilton went the Dollar General route to finding a coach. "The first two of those bit him in the keyster, and all inside the span of 12 months. Dooley and Martin are too new to judge, of course.

This University is so lowly that no good coach wants to work here? That's what many here would have us believe.

Why was Billy Donovan at Marshall? Why was Calipari at UMass? Why was Bill Self at Oral Roberts?

Not every coach starts out at a big time college. He had no head coaching experience prior to his 3 years at Mizzou State. Plenty of great coaches have started at small, unsuccessful schools, those mentioned above are just 3 of many.

Missouri State is not "Nowheresville" of college basketball. Yes, they are a mid-major school, but before Barry Hinson, they had Charlie Spoonhour, who had a reputation as a pretty good coach and Steve Alford, who moved on to bigger things. They do not consider their season a success unless they make the tournament. At one point in time, their girls program was second only to TN in attendance (ever hear of a lass named Jackie Stiles?). They take their basketball very seriously and if Martin did not have the program headed in the right direction, he would not have lasted 3 yrs. there. And let's face it, with CBP and a buttload of 4 and 5 star talent, TN was pretty freaking close to a bubble team this year after starting 7-0 and beating the #4 team in the country.

I like that he's been a fighter all his life

“When he came here (Purdue) in 1991, he had horrible knees, and our trainer told me he’d never play here, but he worked and worked and got himself where he could be functionable,’’ Keady said. “He came back from Europe (Italy) playing pro ball and had (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and got that whipped.
“I told him, ‘You finish your degree, and I’ll hire you,’ and that’s how he got started.’’
