Do you take Gruden at $50m over 10 years?

I know, now that I think about it, your right, it would suck to win 10 or 11 games a year like he was doing at Arky.

You aren't impressed with Gruden's NFL record, but you want to hire a guy that went 3-10 with the Falcons and abandoned them before finishing his first season there.

That's apparently what Basillo is reporting. I don't care how inaccurate Basillo is, it's an interesting question.

10 years is a long time to be committed to paying out 5/yr

I personally would be a fan of a longer contract, assuming the coach was a proven commodity like Gruden. I'd love a contract that would essentially make Tennessee fans shut-up and swallow what happens the next 5-7 years with the same head coach so we can finally have some stability.

I'd take it, but I believe the university has the right to protect itself by putting some benchmarks i.e. 3 consecutive seasons of fewer than 7 wins, you lose the guarantee. Of course, there should also be incentives for winning.

Negotiating a contract for a new HC when one is currently in place? Didn't The Barn get in trouble for this with Petrino when he was still at Louisville? Seems pretty unlikely UT would not just go ahead and fire Dooley if its as eminent as everyone believes.

I think people need to take a step back, breathe a little, and ask when gruden became god's gift to coaching.

Tennessee needs to get the best coach they can, not the coolest name out there

He's done more than Muschamp. How many Super Bowls has Muschamp won as a HC?

Yeah, we need to spend 5 million on a guy who isn't proven at the college level and has a 54% winning percentage in the pros.

Please include the NFL win percentage of the following college coaches who are doing well.

Saban
Spurrier
Petrino
Carrol

Doesn't mean a thing. Go look up Bill Parcells or Jimmy Johnson's winning percentage in the NFL. Even Cowher's is below 70%.

Yeah who wants a guy who thinks enough about this job that he wants long term stability for 10 years.

Do y'all really think we eat all that money if it doesn't "work out" per se? Jon Gruden is a brand. A damn money making brand at that. He will put butts in the seat and merchandise off the shelf instantly. He puts Tennessee's name in the limelight and on the national stage. You all want that, but want to bypass what it takes ($) to get there.
Sunny beaches, it isn't like the AD, University and Boosters are going to eat all that money. Be smart people.

Yes and yes. That would show the football world TN is commited to winning. Face it is the Bama/Saban model which has worked out quite well.

honestly, i take gruden at any price. Any price they can conceivably afford, you do it. If they need to raise my season tickets a hundred bucks a piece to make it happen, then do it. I'll gladly pay it for gruden.

Edit:...and actually, looking at that number, it's rather low. Saban already makes 6 million a year, and college coaching salaries are only going to grow the next few years. Why would gruden want such a long deal, considering that he'll always have other offers anyway? And why would he want to lock himself in to an average of 5 million a year, when he already makes nearly that in his cushy tv job, and would probably make more than that anytime he wanted to go back to the nfl? Seems kind of like a lowball offer, to be honest. If you want gruden, i would think you would have to pay more than that. Of course, gruden would pay for himself, many times over, in the long run, anyway.

this.

I agree. However,

1) They should build the buyout packages so that they will be prorated based on performance (with minimum and maximum amounts set) in case of firing.

2) If the coach is successful, buyout is higher.

3) If coach has lack of success, buyout will be lower.

4) If coach is fired due to ethics/moral issues (i.e., Petrino's situation at Arkansas, Tressel at Ohio State, etc.), no buyout on UT's part, and coach has to repay a prorated portion of salary he has received for the season.

5) Buyout for coach desiring to resign to go to another program, again use the prorated system based on performance.

I just hope Hart has enough sense to replace Dooley... and do it with a quality hire, including a reasonable buyout package for BOTH parties.

GBO!!!

Those numbers sound absurd when you first look at it, but here's some perspective. Since we continue to use Alabama as a benchmark (for good reason) take a look at their salaries both for head coach and assistants.

Alabama coaching salaries

That's over $5 million for the head coach and $4 million for assistants. Pretty comparable to what JG supposedly wants. Now, it's important to qualify this by saying that these are the salaries after winning championships, so it's an arguable position that we would be paying too much out of the gate without making the potential staff earn their keep. But it's also worth mentioning that these are the kinds of numbers we're looking at to be successful on the level that we all want for Tennessee football.
