Do you take Gruden at $50m over 10 years?

I would love to have Gruden, but at this point in UT's Program, I'm afraid we may have to settle for a coach that doesn't command such a high salary and notoriety.
We may all indeed be dissappointed, but that said, it still may take a coach as Gruden to pull the Vols from the ashes of the SEC to being relevent once again. Some folks just don't realize just how far down the Vols have fallen.
Go Vols

Hey ... i believe everyone knows that the Gruden era is a "pipe dream" ... but right now what hope does the Vol fans have to grasp a hold of. It's either Gruden of another year of Dooley. That is pretty much all the Athletic Dept. has given us.

Tennessee cannot financially afford to hire a second rate coach at this point. Go big or enjoy irrelevance for a decade is where we're at.

Thats a big chunk of change but it comes down to what the university plans are. If they want to get back into relevancy and unite the fan base then this is it. Add an extra 5 bucks to the tickets and a few dollars for orange and white game and this increase revenue (along with increased concessions, parking, etc.) will about pay for the assistants.

The 5 mil a year for gruden is just what its gonna cost for a name like that. Bama looked crazy with the Saban hire but now Sabans salary looks like a bargain compared to what he has brought to the school both in football and overall financials.

The last year or two has also showed that Gruden enjoys finding and trying to help build new talent. That is exactly what this team is needing right now. Finding talent is easy ... getting them to sign and being prepared to coach them to their full potential is the hard part.
In any case, I think we're better off at attracting talent and coaching X's and O's with Gruden than we would be with almost anyone else.

While Gruden would be a great hire, I would expect Hart & company to consider all options before going 90 million dollars into hoping Gruden can win here.

Gruden & Staff wants 90 million for 10 years.

Patterson & Petersen & Staff would have to tell me NO at maybe 44 million for 6 years.

Why do you think the staff members would get 10 years also?

I bet even Gruden wouldn't them signed for 10 years.

If they work out, re-sign them. If they don't work out, Gruden would be smart enough to want them replaced. If we hire him and his entire staff for 10 years, we're not going to buy them out for the last 7 years of their contract.

My argument is that the WCO purists have been so committed to what they run, that they refuse to budge. Callahan, Walsh, Denny Green, Embree, some others all fell into that same trap.

I do agree that it takes time for personnel to fully grasp and know a WCO and you can't install everything in 1 offseason to a bunch of college kids and expect positive results. Smart coaches can adapt their scheme to work with less experience football minds. Saban runs a very similar defense, conceptually, to what Belichick does. Do you think their verbage or calls are as complex? Seriously doubt it. That's something that Saban has been incredibly successful at, he runs NFL style schemes with college personnel and teaches those schemes in a way college kids can grasp. Can Gruden do that? Impossible to speculate on until we see it, but to me Gruden is a bright enough offensive mind that I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Honestly, I take Gruden at any price. Any price they can conceivably afford, you do it. If they need to raise my season tickets a hundred bucks a piece to make it happen, then do it. I'll gladly pay it for Gruden.

edit:...and actually, looking at that number, it's rather low. Saban already makes 6 million a year, and college coaching salaries are only going to grow the next few years. Why would Gruden want such a long deal, considering that he'll always have other offers anyway? And why would he want to lock himself in to an average of 5 million a year, when he already makes nearly that in his cushy TV job, and would probably make more than that anytime he wanted to go back to the NFL? Seems kind of like a lowball offer, to be honest. If you want Gruden, I would think you would have to pay more than that. Of course, Gruden would pay for himself, many times over, in the long run, anyway.

If you put up half, he might be our next coach, but I doubt it will happen. I guess it is not unusual for some people to want to spend other people's money.

Yeah, like how the athletic department has been spending our money for years and giving us s%#@ in return.

I was just going with the rumor Gruden wanted 50 million for 10 years and 4 million a year for a staff. 90 million over a 10 year period OR MORE as if his staff got 3-5 year deals, the next hires would make even more or retained staff would get raises.

If Petersen or Patterson were hired it would be ALOT less money over the same period of time. I doubt either guy would require a 10 year deal to come either. Your investment would be about 1/2 what it would take to get Gruden & staff. Both are proven big time winners in college football. I would check with and get a NO from both before I signed off on a near 100 million dollar investment in Jon Gruden. JMO

Well knowing Gruden is a serious long shot I am on the Butch Davis bandwagon...I would have no problem with him coming to UT...He would certainly build a winner here.

At this point, I wouldn't consider Gruden a serious long shot. He's in play just as anyone else such as Butch Davis.

Well we have been led to believe money will be a non issue. So we will see but I would bet my paycheck it will be someone for around 3mil four years. A step up from OJT CDD.

That seems like a little long on the length side of things. However, if the buyout is not silly high in case things go badly then it's fine. If the buyout is silly high then I'd be hesitant to sign it.

it sure would be nice to know if there was any legitimacy to any of this. The realist in me says not a chance. I have zero connections...just don't have a lot of faith I guess. Hope a bunch of you guys prove us wrong!

Gruden 10 years @ 5 Million for him plus 5 million per year for his assitants is a 100 MM comitment = Disaster, will send TN vols to obscurity if it doesnt work. We will be back to the Stone Ages and completely irrelevant.

Petrino 4 years @ 2 Million for him plus 2 million for his assistants is a 16 MM commitment. = Common Sense and a reasonable business desicion.

Not to mention Petrino is a PROVEN HEAD COACH IN THE SEC.

Gruden equals obscurity and Petrino equals the promised land? Petrino is more known for his exits from Atlanta and Arkansas than what he has accomplished on the field.

Proven big time coaches in a conference that is not the SEC, that is my only concern. How do they translate and adjust. And how long would it take
